If you own a Nintendo Switch 2 and are buying either game new, choose its dedicated Switch 2 edition if you want the publisher-stated resolution and frame-rate improvements. If you play on the original Switch, you need the original Switch edition: the Switch 2 releases do not run on that hardware. Already own a Switch copy? There is no planned upgrade pack, and your save will not transfer, so the Switch 2 version means a separate purchase and a fresh save.
Which version should you buy?

These recommendations apply to the dedicated editions. The official sources establish improved resolution and frame rate for the separate Switch 2 releases; they do not establish that running an original Switch edition on Switch 2 provides those same improvements.
Can you play the Switch 2 versions on an original Switch?
No. Nintendo identifies each dedicated Switch 2 edition as incompatible with the original Switch. If you are staying on original Switch hardware, buy the corresponding Switch edition instead. Nintendo lists the Switch 2 versions as playable in TV, tabletop and handheld modes, and as single-player games.

Can you upgrade your Switch copy or transfer its save?
No upgrade pack is planned, and saves are incompatible between the Switch and Switch 2 versions. Square Enix’s product notices say: “There are no plans to sell an upgrade pack to upgrade the Nintendo Switch™ version to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version.” The notices also state: “Save data is incompatible between the Nintendo Switch™ and Nintendo Switch™ 2 versions.”
That means an existing Switch owner who buys the Switch 2 edition should expect a separate purchase and a new save, not a continuation of a partly completed run. If keeping your current progress matters more than the Switch 2 edition’s stated improvements, stay with the version you already own.

What changes in the Switch 2 editions?
Square Enix says the Switch 2 releases have “improved resolution and frame rate for both games” compared with their Switch releases. The announcement and North American listings do not specify resolution targets, frame-rate numbers, or measured results, so there is no official numeric comparison to use when deciding how large the improvement is.
The dedicated Switch 2 editions were released on October 1, 2026, according to Nintendo’s cited listings and Square Enix’s announcement. The announcement describes individual digital releases and a physical bundle containing both games; it does not confirm current retailer inventory or the precise physical format for a particular region.

Should you play OCTOPATH TRAVELER before OCTOPATH TRAVELER II?
No. OCTOPATH TRAVELER follows travelers in Orsterra, while OCTOPATH TRAVELER II introduces eight new travelers in Solistia. Square Enix describes II’s world as independent of the original and says it is suitable for newcomers. You can begin with II without buying or finishing the first game; choose based on which setting and edition appeal to you.
