Should I play Octopath Traveler 1 before 2?
No. The games share a broad identity—each is an HD-2D RPG with eight protagonists and separate character stories—but they are set in different worlds. The original takes place in Orsterra; Octopath Traveler II takes place in Solistia. Square Enix describes II as an independent story, and producer Masashi Takahashi wrote that “there’s no continuous narrative between that game and Octopath Traveler II!” (Square Enix series description; PlayStation.Blog, February 23, 2023.)
That means the first game is not a story prerequisite for the second. You can begin with whichever setting, cast, or edition interests you, without needing to catch up on the original’s plot.
Can I start with Octopath Traveler II?
Yes. Square Enix calls Octopath Traveler II “the perfect entry for newcomers to the series, while also preserving the charm of the original game for existing fans.” That is the publisher’s positioning, not an independent verdict on which game is better. Both games have eight distinct protagonists, but their stories and settings are separate: Orsterra belongs to the original, while Solistia is II’s world. You can choose the one whose premise or available platform suits you rather than following a required plot sequence. (Square Enix series description.)
Which order makes sense if you want to play both?

What should you check before choosing a version?
Platform and regional store listings can affect which edition is practical for you. In a July 13, 2026 announcement, Square Enix said both games would launch on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 1, 2026, with individual digital titles, a digital bundle, and a physical Switch 2 bundle. The publisher warns that availability may vary by region, so check your local store’s current listing. (Square Enix, July 13, 2026.)
The same announcement lists Octopath Traveler II for Switch 2, Switch, Steam, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Xbox on PC. Square Enix’s June 2024 announcement named PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Steam for both games. If you would rather try II before deciding, Square Enix’s February 2023 launch announcement described a three-hour demo with save-data carryover.
