Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, record:
- Which program reports the error: Windows, a database application, an installer, legacy business software, or a game.
- When it appears: at startup, while installing, when opening a database, or when creating an ODBC connection.
- The exact wording: “missing,” “was not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows.”
- The program’s architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit.
- What changed recently: antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, a failed update, software removal, or malware detection.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →odbcconf.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows data-access component. Its description is Microsoft Data Access – ODBC Driver Configuration Program, and its historical owner is Microsoft Data Access Components, or MDAC. On Windows Vista and later, the technology is generally called Windows Data Access Components, or WDAC.
Do not download an arbitrary copy of odbcconf.dll. The safest repair is to restore Windows components with Microsoft’s servicing tools, then repair the application or ODBC driver that actually produced the message.

What odbcconf.dll does
ODBC stands for Open Database Connectivity. It provides a standard way for applications to communicate with database drivers from different vendors.
odbcconf.dll is associated with configuring ODBC drivers and data sources. It is not itself the database driver supplied by Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or another database vendor. It is also not a Visual C++ runtime file.

Microsoft describes MDAC as a collection of ADO, OLE DB, and ODBC technologies. Beginning with Windows Vista, Microsoft used the WDAC name, and those components became part of Windows rather than a separately redistributable modern runtime.
Some file-index pages list historical 32-bit metadata such as version 3.525.1132.0, version 3.525.1117.0, and a size of approximately 0.13 MB. Treat those as historical or third-party file information, not as a guaranteed version for your Windows installation. Windows servicing determines the correct system files for the installed build and architecture.
Understand the error before choosing a fix
The wording points to different repair paths.
| Message | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because odbcconf.dll is missing from your computer.” | The file may be missing from Windows or from the application’s private folder. |
| “The code execution cannot proceed because odbcconf.dll was not found.” | The loader could not locate the requested file in its search path. |
| “Error loading odbcconf.dll. The specified module could not be found.” | A dependency of the named DLL may be missing. The named file is not always the missing item. |
| “odbcconf.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” | The file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, or incompatible with the program. |
These are Windows loader messages, not proof of one universal cause. If only one application fails, repair that application before assuming all of Windows is damaged. If several unrelated applications fail to use ODBC, investigate Windows data-access components, drivers, DSNs, permissions, and security software.
Fix 1: Repair Windows component files with DISM and SFC
This is the correct first repair when Windows’ protected data-access files were deleted or corrupted.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin). On some systems, select Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by other Windows repair operations. A successful completion message means DISM finished its operation. It does not necessarily mean the application that displayed the error is repaired.
Run System File Checker
In the same administrator window, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The useful outcomes are:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files were not found to be corrupt.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the affected program.
-
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: restart, run DISM again if necessary, and review the repair guidance before using a matching installation source or an in-place Windows repair.

Restart the computer.
- Open the program that reported
odbcconf.dll.
If the error remains after DISM and SFC succeed, the problem is probably in the application, its private dependencies, its ODBC driver, or its DSN. SFC and DISM cannot reliably repair a DLL stored only inside an application folder.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific application remains the definitive fix when that application owns the damaged copy.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If one program fails and Windows itself works normally, repair the program that raised the error.
Use the Windows repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu on Windows 11, or select the application entry on Windows 10.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Some desktop programs do not show a Windows repair button. In that case:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Repair, or a similar option.
- Follow the installer’s prompts.
- Restart the program.
For a game, launcher, installer, or business application, use its own Verify files, Repair, or Reinstall function. Download the installer from the software publisher or use the original trusted installation media. Do not copy odbcconf.dll from another computer.
How to tell whether this fixed it
The repair worked if the application opens without the DLL message and can perform the operation that previously failed, such as connecting to its database or completing installation.
If the same error returns immediately, check whether the installer is obsolete and expects an older MDAC environment. Also check antivirus Protection History before reinstalling repeatedly.
Fix 3: Repair the ODBC driver and match its architecture
An ODBC application needs the correct database driver as well as the Windows ODBC components. A driver supplied by a database vendor is separate from odbcconf.dll.
On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit and 64-bit ODBC drivers and DSNs are managed separately:
- 64-bit ODBC Administrator:
%windir%System32odbcad32.exe - 32-bit ODBC Administrator:
%windir%SysWOW64odbcad32.exe
The names are counterintuitive. System32 contains the 64-bit ODBC Administrator on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit version.
Identify the program’s architecture
If the program is running:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform if available.
- Check whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the program’s documentation identifies its architecture, use that information. Older business applications are frequently 32-bit even when Windows is 64-bit.
Open the matching ODBC Administrator
For a 64-bit application:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%System32odbcad32.exe
- Press Enter.
For a 32-bit application:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%windir%SysWOW64odbcad32.exe
- Press Enter.
Select the Drivers tab and confirm that the required vendor driver is listed. Then check the User DSN or System DSN tab used by the application.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit ODBC driver, and a 64-bit application cannot load a 32-bit driver. Reinstall the vendor’s driver in the matching architecture, then recreate or verify the DSN in the matching ODBC Administrator.
A common architecture failure produces an ODBC driver mismatch message rather than a genuine missing odbcconf.dll message. If only one database application fails, ask its vendor which driver architecture it requires.
Driver packages can be difficult to identify when several database products are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it identifies; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and the database vendor’s own matching driver installer is still the definitive choice for an application-specific ODBC problem.
Check Windows Features only when the application requires them
Do not expect turning on a random Windows feature to restore odbcconf.dll. ODBC and WDAC are integrated Windows components, not a normal optional feature that should be enabled by trial and error.
If a legacy application specifically documents a required Windows component:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the available Windows Features.
- Change only the feature identified by the application’s documentation.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
If no relevant feature is listed, return to DISM, SFC, and application repair rather than downloading an old runtime.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software may remove a damaged, modified, or falsely detected file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an entry related to
odbcconf.dllor the affected application. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft or trusted application file and that its original location is correct. Update Defender definitions and run a scan first.

One-click scans. No signup required.
If the file came from an unexpected application directory, was modified, or cannot be authenticated, leave it quarantined. Repair Windows or reinstall the owning application instead. A missing file after malware detection can be evidence of a broader compromise, not a reason to fetch a replacement DLL.

A failed update, disk error, or aggressive cleanup utility can leave protected files incomplete.
First:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install pending updates.
- Restart again.
- Repeat DISM and SFC if the error continues.
If Windows reports disk problems, back up important files before further repair. Check the drive with the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or a qualified technician. Do not use registry cleaners or “DLL fixer” utilities that replace files without identifying their owner.
If the failure began recently and System Restore is enabled:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not replace a backup and may remove applications or updates installed after the selected restore point. It is most useful when a recent change clearly preceded the problem.
Legacy MDAC guidance for older Windows
MDAC 2.8 advice found in old troubleshooting pages mainly applies to Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.
Microsoft’s standalone MDAC 2.8 SP1 redistributable was intended for Windows 2000, while MDAC 2.8 was included with Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003. Beginning with Windows Vista, WDAC became part of the operating system.

Microsoft’s MDAC SDK download is a developer SDK for legacy systems, not a general missing-DLL repair package. Modern Windows should be repaired through Windows servicing and the application or driver installer that needs ODBC.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 is not a universal DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Running this by habit:
regsvr32 odbcconf.dll
does not restore a missing file, repair corrupted Windows servicing, install an ODBC driver, or fix an incorrect DSN. If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that confirms registration is not applicable to that DLL.
Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly documents registration for that specific component and provides the matching architecture and command. Otherwise, use DISM, SFC, application repair, or the proper ODBC driver installer.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy downloading odbcconf.dll is the wrong repair
A standalone DLL download can introduce:
- Malware or tampered code.
- A file from the wrong Windows release.
- A 32-bit file in a 64-bit location, or the reverse.
- Incorrect dependencies.
- A file that Windows servicing later replaces.
- A copy placed in an application directory that hides the real problem.
The supported sources are Windows itself, Windows Update, the official application installer, and the official ODBC driver installer from the relevant database vendor. Microsoft says WDAC is included with Windows and is not separately redistributable as a modern standalone component.
Manual copying is appropriate only in a controlled, vendor-supported deployment using a verified binary that exactly matches the required system and architecture.
If every ODBC application fails
When multiple applications lose database connectivity, inspect the shared ODBC configuration rather than reinstalling each application.
- Open both ODBC Administrators using the paths above.
- Check whether the expected driver appears in the correct Drivers tab.
- Check whether the DSN exists in the correct 32-bit or 64-bit administrator.
- Use the driver’s Configure or Test Connection option when available.
- Reinstall the matching database driver.
- Recreate the DSN if it is damaged.
- Review recent antivirus, security policy, Windows update, or registry-permission changes.
- Run DISM and SFC if Windows components may be damaged.
If a driver is listed but cannot load, the driver’s own dependencies, permissions, installation, or architecture may be at fault. The presence of odbcconf.dll does not prove that the database driver is healthy.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When to use an in-place Windows repair
Use an in-place repair when:
- DISM and SFC cannot repair protected files.
- Windows has broader component or update failures.
- System Restore is unavailable or unsuccessful.
- Multiple built-in applications and unrelated programs show file-integrity errors.
An in-place repair reinstalls Windows system components while normally preserving personal files and installed applications, but preparation and eligibility depend on the installed Windows edition and installation media. Back up important files first and use matching, official Windows installation media. If the computer has malware, serious disk errors, or a failing drive, address those problems before repairing Windows.
If only one application still fails after Windows repair, contact that application or database-driver vendor. The remaining fault is likely private to that program, its dependencies, its ODBC driver, or its DSN.
Frequently asked questions
Is odbcconf.dll a Windows file?
Yes. It is a genuine Microsoft data-access component associated historically with MDAC and, on newer Windows versions, WDAC. The correct copy and servicing state depend on the Windows installation.
Is odbcconf.dll an ODBC driver?
No. It is associated with ODBC driver configuration. Individual database vendors supply separate ODBC drivers, which must also match the application’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Should I reinstall Visual C++?
Not as a first remedy. There is no evidence-based reason to assume odbcconf.dll belongs to a Visual C++ redistributable. Repair Windows, the affected application, or its ODBC driver according to which component is failing.
Should I download MDAC 2.8 on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. MDAC 2.8 guidance is for legacy Windows versions. Modern Windows includes WDAC and should be repaired through Windows servicing and the relevant application or driver installer.
Does “specified module could not be found” prove the DLL is missing?
No. A dependency required by odbcconf.dll may be the missing module. Repairing or reinstalling the application or driver can reveal and restore that dependency.
Why did regsvr32 fail?
The DLL may not expose a registration entry point, or the command may have used the wrong architecture. regsvr32 is not routine repair for this component.
What if SFC and DISM report success but the program still will not start?
Repair or reinstall the affected program, check its private dependencies, verify the correct ODBC driver, and inspect the matching ODBC Administrator for the required DSN.
Can I copy the file from another PC?
Do not do this. The other computer may have a different Windows build, architecture, servicing state, or compromised file. Use Windows repair or a trusted component installer instead.
