Of Ash and Steel is already out on PC, not an unreleased game awaiting a preview. Fire & Frost’s single-player open-world RPG launched on Steam on November 24, 2025. Its defining choices are exploration without conventional quest markers and deliberate, stamina-based combat. Developer Fire & Frost has also announced the Shattered Faith expansion and versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but has not provided a firm release date for them.
What is Of Ash and Steel?
Developed by Fire & Frost and published by tinyBuild, Of Ash and Steel is a third-person, single-player open-world RPG set on an island in the Kingdom of the Seven. The Steam listing describes the island as once prosperous and frames the adventure as a story-rich, Gothic fantasy with exploration, crafting, choices and medieval combat. Its advertised campaign length is “45+ hours of main story,” a claim from the Steam store listing rather than an independently measured completion time. Steam store page
The listing describes two major factions, each with its own storyline, quests and rewards. Combat offers three stances, multiple weapon types and active skills. That combination points to a role-playing game built around learning its systems and exploring its setting, rather than a straightforward action game focused on rapid progression.
How exploration and navigation work
The game does not use conventional quest markers to guide players from objective to objective. Instead, its design expects players to pay attention to what characters say, read books and notes, consult the journal, and mark locations on the map. The developer FAQ says a map becomes available after Chapter 1. This can make exploration feel more hands-on: finding a place or working out what to do depends on information gathered in the world, rather than a glowing route marker. The trade-off is convenience. Players who prefer clear waypoint guidance or step-by-step quest directions may find the navigation slower or less obvious.
What combat demands
Combat emphasizes stamina management, attack timing and parries, alongside choices about weapon type and stance. The developer says protagonist Tristan begins as a cartographer, not a trained fighter; limited early stamina and slower attacks are intentional parts of his progression. That framing sets expectations for a combat system the player must learn, rather than a hero who begins as a highly capable warrior. Developer FAQ

Players who enjoy measured encounters and developing a character’s abilities may appreciate that gradual start. Those looking for fast, forgiving combat may find the pace demanding, particularly early on. The game’s own design materials also acknowledge concerns about stamina, strong enemies and slower pacing as player-facing questions; those FAQ headings are not a representative survey of players.

Of Ash and Steel is currently listed as a Windows PC game on Steam, with a release date of November 24, 2025. The store page’s US price was $29.99 when checked on October 7, 2026; price and availability can change, so check the listing for the current figure. Steam lists eight supported interface and subtitle languages: English, Russian, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Japanese, Polish and Simplified Chinese. Full audio is listed for English and Russian. The same store page flags realistic medieval-combat violence, crime, profanity and alcohol in its mature-content description.
Steam’s snapshot on October 7, 2026 showed 58% positive English reviews from 1,422 reviews overall, and 69% positive recent reviews from 143 reviews. These are dated platform ratings, not an independent evaluation; review totals and percentages can change.

What Shattered Faith adds
On September 14, 2026, Fire & Frost announced Of Ash & Steel: Shattered Faith, an expansion that takes Tristan to Grayshaft in search of ancient artifacts. The developer’s announcement lists two schools of magic, six new locations, a new weapon class, more than 50 random events, new weapons and armor, 12 unique perks, weapon enchanting, a card game and the ability to create a guild. The developer called the expansion “coming soon,” but the announcement did not give a firm launch date. It also announced plans to bring both the base game and expansion to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. No console release date was provided, and the announcement’s plan for at least one more base-game patch should not be treated as a guarantee of a particular update or schedule.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
Of Ash and Steel is a better fit for players who want a single-player fantasy open world that asks them to observe, read and find their own way, and who are willing to learn deliberate stamina-based combat. It is a less natural fit for anyone who relies on constant quest markers, expects quick early power progression or prefers forgiving, fast-paced encounters. Steam currently lists the PC version; the announced console editions and expansion do not yet have firm release dates.
