Official Stranger Things Games Ranked: Which One Is Best to Play Now?

Stranger Things: 1984 is the best all-around official Stranger Things game in this ranking because its compact retro-adventure design fits the series’ 1980s identity better than any other entry. Stranger Things 3: The Game is the stronger choice for character variety and local co-op, while Stranger Things VR offers the most unusual viewpoint.

This list covers five documented standalone Stranger Things games or branded game attractions: Netflix’s Stranger Things: 1984, Stranger Things 3: The Game and Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales; Stranger Things VR; and the 2026 Stranger Things Arcade attraction. Crossover appearances in other games are listed separately and are not treated as standalone Stranger Things releases.

How these official Stranger Things games are ranked

This is an editorial ranking based on the documented premise, genre, playable variety, accessibility, connection to the show and format of each release. It is not a review-score table, a consensus ranking or a report from direct playtesting. Availability also affects practical recommendations: a historically notable game can rank well conceptually while being difficult to find today.

The evidence does not establish a verified, complete licensing catalog for every Stranger Things-branded digital product ever released. The five entries below are the documented standalone games and attraction that fit the stated scope. A costume, character pack or licensed chapter inside another game is not counted as its own Stranger Things game.

1. Stranger Things: 1984

Why it ranks first

Stranger Things: 1984 is the cleanest match between a game’s mechanics and the franchise’s identity. Netflix describes an ’80s-inspired adventure in which players undertake missions with Hopper and the kids around Hawkins and the Upside Down, hunt for collectibles and move through a deliberately retro presentation. That pixel-era styling is not merely decoration: it makes the game feel like a compact interactive extension of the show’s period setting.

The format is also easy to understand. Rather than asking players to learn a large live-service system or a complex character-collection economy, it presents a focused adventure built around exploring recognizable locations, completing objectives and finding optional items. For someone asking for the most recognizably “Stranger Things” game, that concentration gives it the strongest claim to the top spot.

What you actually get

  • Missions involving Hopper and the younger Hawkins characters.
  • Travel between Hawkins and the Upside Down.
  • Collectibles that reward exploration beyond the critical path.
  • A retro visual and mechanical identity that reflects the series’ 1980s setting.

Netflix’s 2021 mobile-games announcement identified BonusXP as the developer. The current Netflix games catalog lists the title among its mobile games; that catalog is dated September 9, 2026. You can check Netflix’s live listing at Netflix Games. The catalog listing establishes present catalog inclusion, but device support and account requirements can vary by operating system and region, so confirm the listing on the device where you intend to play.

Who should choose it

Choose 1984 if you want a single-player-friendly, self-contained adventure with the show’s strongest retro flavor. It is less suited to people specifically looking for a large roster, versus play or a party attraction; those needs are addressed by other entries below.

2. Stranger Things 3: The Game

The best choice for characters and co-op

Stranger Things 3: The Game takes the third season’s Hawkins setting and turns it into a pixelated action-adventure RPG. Netflix’s Media Center description confirms 12 playable characters and both solo and co-op play. The roster is its defining advantage: instead of experiencing the story through one avatar, players can switch among a broad group of familiar characters, each contributing to the season-inspired adventure.

Dungeons & Dragons Stranger Things: Welcome to the Hellfire Club Adventure Game
  • FINISH THE CAMPAIGN—The Hellfire Club was born in Eddie Munson’s basement—a haven for outsiders, free spirits, and dice-slingers. But his final campaign was left unfinished... until now. Keep the flames of Hellfire burning in this collaborative 3–5 player game.
  • TURN YOUR ADVENTURES UPSIDE DOWN—Take on challenges hotter than Hellfire with 4 of Eddie’s lost adventures—from gnarly battles with Demogorgons and Demodogs, eerie dockside murders, and the treacherous Vale of Shadows.
  • STEP BACK INTO THE 80’S—Take a time machine back to the 80’s with totally tubular collectibles, including retro cards, vibrant character sheets, and a Dungeon Master’s Screen. There’s an entire Nine Hells of 80’s-themed flavor to explore!
  • GET THE GANG TOGETHER—Grab your snacks, invite your buddies, and gather round the table to get rocking and rolling on psychedelic adventures. With tips and tricks from the legend Eddie Munson himself, this is a place where everyone is welcome.
  • FOR ALL SKILL LEVELS—Whether you’re a seasoned adventurer or completely new to roleplaying, everyone is welcome at the Hellfire Club. Everything you need to play is in this box, including a handy quick-start guide and play guide

Netflix classifies the game across action, adventure and role-playing categories. That combination signals a broader loop than a short puzzle game: exploration and combat sit alongside character-based abilities and progression. The result ranks just below 1984 because its season tie-in and larger playable cast are excellent, but its design is more specifically tied to one season and less concentrated as a retro tribute.

How its local co-op works

Netflix Help documents support for Android and iOS devices, a Netflix membership, a compatible device and Bluetooth wireless controllers. The support page specifically identifies Xbox and PlayStation controllers as supported options and documents a two-controller co-op setup. That makes this the clearest official Stranger Things game for playing together on one compatible mobile setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Use a compatible Android or iOS device with an active Netflix membership.
  2. Pair the Bluetooth controllers with the device before launching the game.
  3. For co-op, connect two supported controllers; Netflix’s support documentation describes the two-controller arrangement.
  4. Launch Stranger Things 3: The Game from the Netflix games catalog and select the game’s co-op option.

Netflix’s support requirements and controller details are available at Netflix Help: Stranger Things 3: The Game. If a controller is not recognized, check that it is paired at the operating-system level, that no other device has claimed the connection and that the phone or tablet meets Netflix’s compatibility requirements.

Controller buying guidance

If touch controls are uncomfortable, an optional Bluetooth game controller advertised as compatible with iPhone or Android is the relevant accessory category. Netflix officially names Xbox and PlayStation controllers for this game, but compatibility can still depend on the specific phone, tablet, operating-system version and controller mode. Verify those details before buying; there is no need to choose a particular model to use the documented co-op feature.

3. Stranger Things VR

A different point of view

Stranger Things VR earns third place because it changes the question from “Which Hawkins hero do I control?” to “What is it like to inhabit the show’s villain?” Netflix announced the game as a Vecna-centered experience involving exploration of unknown realities and the hive mind. Netflix also said that Jamie Campbell Bower and Matthew Modine would provide voice performances, connecting the virtual-reality premise directly to the television series.

  • Ideal Gift for Stranger Things Fans: This quiz card game is perfect for fans 15 and up, making it a great addition to Stranger Things gifts. It offers a fun way to dive into the mysteries of Hawkins and relive iconic moments from the series.

This is the most conceptually distinctive entry in the ranking. A Vecna-led perspective can explore parts of the fiction that a conventional Hawkins adventure cannot, and virtual reality is a natural fit for making spatial environments and supernatural transitions feel immediate.

Availability caveat

Netflix’s Stranger Things Day 2023 recap gave November 30, 2023 as the planned Meta Quest release date. That announcement does not independently establish the game’s current storefront listing, supported Quest models or present regional availability. Treat it as a historically announced Meta Quest title and verify the current Meta store listing before buying hardware or planning a play session. The announcement is documented in Netflix’s Stranger Things Day 2023 recap.

Because current access is not confirmed in the evidence available here, Stranger Things VR cannot outrank the mobile games for a reader who wants something readily accessible now. It remains the better conceptual pick for a VR owner who specifically wants a villain’s-eye view of the Upside Down mythology.

4. Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales

Match-3 battles with a large cast

Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales targets a different audience from the two adventure games. Netflix’s June 2023 coverage describes a match-3 RPG with more than 30 characters, puzzle missions and rogue mission modes. Familiar enemies appear as combat encounters, while character collecting and team building provide the longer-term structure.

That format makes Puzzle Tales the natural choice for fans who enjoy assembling a roster, matching tiles to trigger attacks and replaying missions with different combinations. Netflix identified Next Games as a developer specializing in games including Puzzle Tales. Netflix game designer Hetta Inari Komi explained one Vecna mechanic this way: “We’ve designed his in-game abilities to mirror his show counterpart, as he marks your characters one by one and defeats them instantly.” The quote describes a specific in-game ability, not an overall quality score.

What is and is not confirmed about access

Netflix’s current games catalog page checked for this ranking lists Stranger Things: 1984 and Stranger Things 3: The Game, but does not list Puzzle Tales. That absence does not prove a worldwide delisting; catalogs can differ by date, region or platform. The responsible conclusion is narrower: Netflix clearly described the game in 2023, while its current availability is unconfirmed in the catalog evidence available here. The original coverage is at Netflix Tudum’s Puzzle Tales article.

It ranks below Stranger Things VR because its match-3 structure is less unusual and its present access is less certain. It still has the largest documented character count, making it appealing to collectors and fans who want to build teams around more than 30 familiar faces.

5. Stranger Things Arcade

An attraction rather than a home release

Stranger Things Arcade belongs at the bottom of a video-game ranking only because its format is fundamentally different. A June 2026 Creative Bloq report described a Raw Thrills attraction initially rolling out at Dave & Buster’s locations in the United States. The reported game is a ball-throwing experience for one to four players, designed to be played at the venue rather than downloaded to a phone, console or PC.

That makes it a social outing, not an Amazon-searchable home game. Its strengths are immediacy and group participation: several people can stand at the cabinet and play together without learning a long campaign. Its limitations are equally clear: access depends on a participating location, local machine availability and the attraction remaining on the floor.

How to decide whether it is worth seeking out

  • Check the individual Dave & Buster’s location before travelling; the report describes a US rollout, not universal deployment.
  • Expect a short, venue-based session rather than a persistent save file or home campaign.
  • Bring a group if possible, since the reported format supports one to four players.
  • Use the attraction as a themed arcade activity, not as a substitute for a mobile or VR game.

The available details come from secondary reporting in Creative Bloq’s 2026 report, so local operators should be treated as the final authority on machines, pricing and operating dates.

Which Stranger Things game should you play?

Your priority Best match Reason
A compact retro adventure Stranger Things: 1984 Hawkins and the Upside Down missions, collectibles and an ’80s-inspired presentation.
The largest documented playable roster Stranger Things: Puzzle Tales More than 30 characters, with match-3 RPG team building.
Local two-player gaming Stranger Things 3: The Game Netflix documents 12 playable characters and two-controller co-op support.
A villain’s perspective in VR Stranger Things VR Vecna-centered exploration of unknown realities and the hive mind.
A group outing Stranger Things Arcade A reported one-to-four-player ball-throwing attraction at participating venues.

For the most dependable starting point, open Netflix’s current games catalog and look for 1984 or Stranger Things 3. If co-op is the deciding factor, Stranger Things 3: The Game is the only entry here with explicit Netflix documentation for two Bluetooth controllers. If you are interested in Puzzle Tales or Stranger Things VR, verify the current store or catalog listing first because the evidence above does not confirm present availability.

Official crossovers that are not standalone Stranger Things games

Several licensed appearances belong in a separate category. Netflix’s November 2023 recap noted Eleven, Chief Hopper and the Demogorgon in Fortnite. It also described the returning Dead by Daylight Stranger Things Chapter, including the Underground Complex map, the Demogorgon, Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington. These are official Stranger Things appearances inside other games, so counting them as separate Stranger Things games would inflate the ranking and blur the distinction between a full release and downloadable crossover content.

The same distinction applies to themed interactive experiences. Netflix describes official immersive activities at Netflix House and other venues, but those attractions are not ranked here as video games unless the definition is expanded beyond digital or arcade-style game releases. Netflix’s overview of those offerings is available at Netflix House.

Related official franchise material

For readers who want more than games, Netflix has also highlighted a collection of official Stranger Things books and other products in its franchise coverage. That material is separate from this ranking and does not change which releases qualify as games. Details are collected in Netflix’s products and collaborations article.

The verdict

Stranger Things: 1984 is the strongest overall recommendation because it delivers the clearest blend of Hawkins exploration, Upside Down missions, collectibles and retro presentation. Pick Stranger Things 3: The Game instead when 12 playable characters and local co-op matter more than a compact solo adventure. Stranger Things VR is the boldest premise, Puzzle Tales is the deepest character-collection concept and Stranger Things Arcade is the best fit for a location-based group outing.
