OHKO Moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Tera Raids: What Actually Happens

No. Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill and Sheer Cold do not instantly knock out a Tera Raid boss in Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. The reported raid rule protects the boss from moves that cause an instant knockout. The same mechanics reference distinguishes the boss from players’ Pokémon, against which the moves work normally.

That distinction matters because a Tera Raid is a cooperative, time-limited battle. Pokémon’s official event description says you work with three other Trainers to defeat a powerful Tera Pokémon before time runs out. Spending a turn on an OHKO attempt against the boss therefore does not provide the shortcut its name suggests.

The short answer for Tera Raid bosses

OHKO moves do not instantly defeat the raid boss in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. A Tera Raid boss is specifically unaffected by the standard one-hit knockout moves listed in the mechanics references.

“OHKO” means “one-hit knockout.” In this context, the relevant moves are:

The important qualification is the target. The restriction is reported for the raid boss, not as a universal statement that these moves are disabled against every Pokémon present during a raid.

Why the target distinction matters

A Tera Raid battle contains more than one category of Pokémon. There is the powerful Tera Pokémon controlled by the game, and there are the Pokémon brought by the participating Trainers. The mechanics reference describing this rule says the boss is unaffected by instant-knockout moves while also noting that the moves work normally against players’ Pokémon.

That means two statements can both be true:

  • An OHKO move cannot instantly remove the Tera Raid boss.
  • The same move is not automatically treated as nonfunctional against players’ Pokémon.

Do not convert the boss protection into the broader claim “OHKO moves never work in a raid.” That wording loses the distinction made by the reference and can lead to an incorrect explanation of what the game is protecting.

What “does not work” means here

For this question, “does not work” means the move does not produce its defining instant-knockout result against the Tera Raid boss. It is not evidence that every possible interaction involving the move is erased from the battle, nor does it establish a different damage formula.

The available mechanics descriptions identify the boss as unaffected by moves that can cause an instant KO. They do not provide a separate numerical damage value, alternate animation rule or substitute effect for an OHKO attempt. The safe practical conclusion is therefore limited and useful: do not select one of these moves expecting the boss to disappear in one hit.

  • Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea

This wording also avoids a common mistake in guides and discussions. “The boss is unaffected” is a target-specific rule. It is more precise than saying the move is deleted from the game, disabled everywhere in the raid or unusable against all four Trainers’ Pokémon.

How this fits the Tera Raid format

Pokémon’s official event page describes a Tera Raid Battle as cooperative: “In a Tera Raid Battle, you’ll work together with three other Trainers to defeat a powerful Tera Pokémon before time runs out.” That description establishes two practical conditions for evaluating an OHKO strategy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Four-Trainer cooperation: the battle is designed around a group working toward the boss’s defeat.
  • A time limit: every turn spent on an unsuccessful shortcut reduces the time available for actions that can advance the fight.

The official page supports the format and time limit, but it does not state the OHKO restriction. The boss-specific rule comes from the cited mechanics references, including Bulbapedia’s Tera Raid mechanics entry and its one-hit knockout entry. Those references are community-edited secondary sources, so the two claims should not be presented as though the event page itself confirmed the move interaction.

How each standard OHKO move is treated

Fissure

Fissure is one of the four standard OHKO moves named by the one-hit knockout mechanics reference. Against a Tera Raid boss, it does not supply an instant defeat. Bringing Fissure with the expectation that a successful use will end the boss’s health bar is therefore a bad plan.

Guillotine

Guillotine is covered by the same boss protection. Its classification as an OHKO move does not override the raid rule. The move’s presence in a Pokémon’s moveset should not be treated as a way to bypass the boss encounter.

Horn Drill

Horn Drill is also listed among the standard OHKO moves that Tera Raid bosses resist in this specific sense. The restriction is attached to the boss target, so it should not be rephrased as a claim that Horn Drill is universally nonfunctional against players’ Pokémon.

Sheer Cold

Sheer Cold completes the four-move list. Like the other three, it does not instantly knock out the Tera Raid boss. The mechanics reference separately reports normal operation against players’ Pokémon, preserving the same target distinction.

What to do instead of planning an OHKO

If your goal is to clear a Tera Raid reliably, treat an OHKO move as unsuitable for the boss’s main defeat condition. A simple pre-battle check prevents the most common misunderstanding:

  1. Identify the intended target. Ask whether the move is being chosen for the game-controlled Tera Raid boss or for a player-controlled Pokémon.
  2. Check whether the move is one of the four standard OHKO moves. The list is Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill and Sheer Cold.
  3. Apply the boss rule. If the target is the Tera Raid boss, do not expect an instant knockout.
  4. Account for the clock. The official description makes clear that the group must defeat the Tera Pokémon before time runs out.
  5. Choose a plan that does not depend on an instant-KO result. The cited material does not prescribe a replacement move, damage amount or team composition, so the responsible conclusion is simply to use a strategy whose success does not require the protected interaction.

This checklist is intentionally narrower than a full raid-build guide. It answers the move-mechanic question without inventing a particular counter, item, stat spread or damage benchmark that the available references do not establish.

Common misconceptions and their corrections

“An OHKO move has a chance, so it might still delete the boss.”

The relevant rule is not merely about probability. The mechanics references say the raid boss is unaffected by these instant-knockout moves. That is a boss exception, not a low-odds version of the normal move interaction.

  • You will also find a code card for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.

“All OHKO moves are disabled for the entire raid.”

That overstates the evidence. The reference explicitly distinguishes the boss from players’ Pokémon and says the moves work normally against the latter. Keep the restriction tied to the raid boss.

“The official event page proves the OHKO rule.”

The official page establishes the cooperative format and the time limit. It does not state the specific instant-KO restriction in the cited material. Attribute the boss interaction to the mechanics references instead of presenting it as an official event-page quotation.

“The rule applies to every Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet.”

The question concerns Tera Raid bosses. The cited rule should not be expanded into a claim about ordinary wild battles, other battle formats or every Pokémon in the games. Those are different contexts from the one covered here.

Why the wording in guides matters

Short answers often say “OHKO moves don’t work in Tera raids,” because that is easy to remember. It is also imprecise. A better explanation names the four moves, identifies the protected target and preserves the separate statement about players’ Pokémon.

Precision is especially important when a player is troubleshooting a battle. If an OHKO attempt fails against the boss, the failure is consistent with the raid-boss rule. If a move behaves normally against a player’s Pokémon, that is not a contradiction; it reflects the target distinction recorded by the mechanics reference.

Likewise, do not attach an unsupported percentage, level threshold, accuracy figure or damage number to this rule. No named statistic relevant to the question is established by the cited material. The useful fact is categorical: the boss does not suffer the instant knockout.

A practical decision tree

Use this quick sequence when reading a moveset or discussing a raid plan:

  • Is the target the Tera Raid boss? If yes, an OHKO move will not instantly defeat it.
  • Is the target a player’s Pokémon? The cited mechanics reference says the moves work normally against players’ Pokémon; do not apply the boss exception automatically.
  • Are you relying on one successful hit to beat the encounter? That plan is incompatible with the reported boss protection.
  • Is someone quoting the official event page as proof of the move rule? Separate the official format description from the secondary mechanics explanation.

This decision tree resolves the literal question without requiring assumptions about a specific raid, Pokémon, move accuracy, team role or difficulty setting.

Bottom line for players

In Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Tera Raid Battles, Fissure, Guillotine, Horn Drill and Sheer Cold do not instantly knock out the Tera Raid boss. The boss-specific protection is reported by the mechanics references, while the official event description confirms that raids are cooperative, time-limited battles. The same mechanics reference says OHKO moves work normally against players’ Pokémon, so the accurate answer is target-specific rather than a blanket ban on the moves throughout a raid.
