Old School Musical is a rhythm game dressed as a comic retro-game adventure: you press buttons in time with chiptune music to make its heroes swing swords, shoot, and tackle other action scenes. It is best suited to players who enjoy rhythm challenges and affectionate 8-bit parody; it is not primarily a conventional story adventure. The game launched on September 13, 2018, for Nintendo Switch and Windows.

What kind of game is Old School Musical?

French studio La Moutarde frames Old School Musical around brothers Tib and Rob, who set off on a deliberately wacky quest to find the source of bugs in video games. The premise supplies the jokes and retro-game references, while rhythm inputs drive the action: the player hits the right buttons in time to swing a sword, fire from a spacecraft, and perform other actions.

That distinction matters when deciding whether to play. The adventure gives the rhythm stages a playful context, but the core interaction is still timing inputs to music. La Moutarde describes 20 story levels alongside multiplayer. The game also invites score-focused replay, rather than presenting its story as the only reason to return.

Is Old School Musical worth playing?

It makes the clearest case for itself if you like chiptune, rhythm-game timing, and humor built around classic video-game tropes. Its musical identity is central, not incidental: La Moutarde’s press kit names Dubmood, Zabutom, Hello World, Yponeko, and Le Plancton among its music contributors.

Players looking for a deep, serious narrative adventure should set expectations accordingly. The story is a comic wrapper for rhythm-led stages, not evidence of a traditional action-adventure structure. Nor does the available evidence establish an independent critic-score consensus or provide hands-on performance testing; a storefront user rating should not be mistaken for either.

Platforms, modes, and practical differences

The game’s original release was on September 13, 2018. Its Nintendo Switch and Steam listings describe different play options and practical details, so choose based on where and how you plan to play.

Version Play modes and features Practical details
Nintendo Switch TV, tabletop, and handheld modes; Nintendo lists one-system play for one to four players. Two free song-pack DLCs, Toricity and MV Expo, are listed. US listing: 1.1 GB; ten supported languages, including American English; ESRB rating: Fantasy Violence and Mild Blood. Nintendo cautions that compatibility and play experience may differ on Switch Lite and that additional accessories may be required separately.
Steam (Windows) Single-player, shared/split-screen co-op and PvP, Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, and Remote Play Together. Steam lists interface and subtitle support in English, French, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Spanish (Spain), and Brazilian Portuguese. Its listed minimums include Windows 7 64-bit, Intel Core Duo or faster, 512 MB RAM, DirectX 9, and 610 MB storage; check the current store listing for current operating-system compatibility.

Publisher names also vary by storefront: Steam credits Dear Villagers as publisher, while Nintendo’s US listing credits Plug In Digital. La Moutarde is identified as developer on both. These are storefront-specific credits, not a single universal publisher label.

Can you play Old School Musical with friends?

Yes. Nintendo lists one-system play for up to four players on Switch. Steam lists shared/split-screen co-op and PvP, and Remote Play Together. The exact multiplayer setup therefore depends on platform: Switch supports local play on one system, while Steam additionally advertises its Remote Play Together feature.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Nintendo Switch
  • Ferocious Competition - At the heart of Puyo Puyo Tetris is the fighting spirit of players competing against each other to be most clever, cunning, and quick-witted one to set up devastating attacks on opponents. It's the classic easy-to-learn puzzles mashed up into a multiplayer battle like no other!
  • Adventure Mode - The game also has a single player mode with ten unique acts, eatch with ten stages. They feature different characters from the Puyo Puyo or Tetris universes and have unique challenges to learn and master game mechanics that players must overcome!
  • Arcade Modes - Online play has Puzzle League, which tracks players' ratings, players can save replays to upload and share, and more.
  • There's also an in-game shop players can use their points to unlock different Puyo and Tetrimino skins, background music, stages, and more.

For a local Switch session, plan the controller setup before inviting a full group. Nintendo says additional accessories may be sold separately, but its listing does not specify the exact controller count or configuration for each player. A compatible Switch controller may be useful; the store information does not establish that every player needs a separate one.

How many songs are in Old School Musical?

Official materials do not give one consistent total. La Moutarde’s press kit says 50 chiptune tracks, while the studio’s game-page descriptions have used totals of 50 and 60. Treat those as differing official descriptions rather than a confirmed count for every platform or edition.

On Switch, Nintendo lists Toricity and MV Expo as free song-pack DLCs. Steam also lists separate soundtrack products and two free song packs. Those listings distinguish additional digital content from the music included in the base game; a soundtrack product is not itself a count of playable in-game tracks.

What is the physical Switch edition, and is it still available?

Super Rare Games released a limited physical Switch edition, SRG#36, on July 30, 2020, in a stated run of 4,000 copies. The publisher’s product page currently marks it sold out. That establishes the status of the official limited run, not the availability or price of secondhand copies.

What the developers say about its design

In a development postmortem, La Moutarde co-founder and developer François Bertrand says Switch button readability influenced a redesign of how inputs appear on screen. He also recounts that the team got the game running at 60fps on Switch during development. That is a developer’s retrospective, not an independent performance benchmark.

Bertrand describes the project’s long development and the collaboration with its composers. His assessment of the game’s accessibility and appeal is a creator’s view; it can add context to the design, but it is not a substitute for a player’s own judgment.
