Old School RuneScape preserves a version of the game from 2007, but the Old School RuneScape service itself launched in 2013. That distinction matters: in 2026, the game era it recreates is nearly 20 years old, while the live service is about 13. Jagex is still developing substantial new content and tools for it, and its creative director has described record-setting engagement. Those are reasons to see a future for OSRS—not proof that its best years are guaranteed to come.
How old is Old School RuneScape?
There are three dates behind the age question. RuneScape began in 2001; Old School RuneScape preserves a 2007 version of the game; and Jagex dates the birth of the OSRS service to 2013. So, in 2026, the preserved era is about 19 years old and the service is about 13. Jagex marks 25 years of the broader RuneScape franchise in 2026, not 25 years of OSRS. Jagex’s company history and PC Gamer’s history of OSRS make the distinction clear.
Why the game goes back to 2007
The version Jagex restored was not exactly the one players had asked for. Jagex senior communications manager Danni Amos told PC Gamer that players wanted the 2006 version, but Jagex could not find it in its archives. An employee found a 2007 server instead, which the team managed to boot up. The story helps explain how a specific snapshot became the foundation for a long-running service, rather than suggesting that OSRS had already been running since 2007.
Why is Old School RuneScape still popular?
OSRS balances a recognizable old-school game with a live service that continues to change. Its familiar fundamentals give returning players a known world and style of play; ongoing quests, activities, and systems give the game reasons to keep moving. A second part of that balance is community influence: Jagex leadership told PC Gamer that proposed additions are subject to player voting, with a 70% approval minimum. That is an account of the polling approach in the August 2026 interview, not an independently verified description of every poll or rule over the game’s history.

For some players, community input is part of the appeal: updates are not simply imposed as if the game were a fixed historical artifact. But polling also means the old-school identity is maintained through choices about what changes and what does not. That model can support continuity without freezing the game in its 2007 state.
Is Old School RuneScape still popular?
There is evidence of strong engagement, but the available population figure needs careful attribution. PC Gamer’s August 14, 2026 feature reported that OSRS had set an all-time player-count record the previous August. In the same feature, creative director Kieren Charles estimated that the game had upwards of one million active subscribers. That subscriber number is Charles’s estimate as reported by PC Gamer, not an audited player count published by Jagex.

Charles also told the outlet, “The game’s bigger now than it was in 2007,” a statement about the game’s broader stature rather than a like-for-like population comparison. The cited material does not provide a comparable audited series showing OSRS’s player counts over time, or a consistent comparison with RuneScape or other MMOs. The record and estimate support the view that the game remains significant; they do not establish precisely how its population compares across years or competitors.
What’s coming to Old School RuneScape in 2026?
Jagex’s May 29, 2026 Summer Campfire recap described a varied OSRS slate, from story and exploration to endgame content and client work. These are roadmap statements from that recap; they should not be read as confirmation that every item shipped on the stated schedule.

- The Blood Moon Rises: Jagex described this as the sixth grandmaster quest and the finale to the Myreque series, with a June 30 release date in the recap.
- Wyrmscraig: The island was selected through a Sailing player-designed island contest. The plans included questing, skilling, a Slayer Master, and a repeatable boss.
- The Graveyard: A new Fremennik-series quest and an agility update were planned for autumn.
- The Fractured Archive: Jagex described this as a new endgame raid and the first in more than four years. Its planned format featured eight bosses and a streamlined boss-rush structure.
- Community and technology: The recap also named a player-led bingo feature and work on the official client, mobile experience, and renderer.
That range matters to the longevity question. OSRS is not relying only on the nostalgia of returning to an old map: its roadmap points to new quests, endgame challenges, player activities, and improvements to how the game is played. Plans alone cannot show how well individual releases will land, but they do show continued development rather than preservation by neglect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this mean OSRS’s best years are still ahead?
It is a plausible outlook, not a demonstrated result. The strongest evidence is the combination of continued content investment, a reported player-count record, and leadership’s estimate of more than a million active subscribers. Jagex’s broader 2026 communications also describe investment in the RuneScape franchise. Together, these signals suggest that the company sees room to keep building around the game.

They do not amount to a promise that OSRS will surpass its past, nor do they identify a particular future year as its peak. Jagex’s RuneFest 2026 preview discusses plans to bring players back and ambitions for 2027 across RuneScape, but that is franchise-level strategy, not an OSRS-specific roadmap. Likewise, the growth of other RuneScape projects cannot be counted as OSRS population growth.
There is also no direct named-person quote in the cited coverage claiming that OSRS’s best years are ahead. The phrase is best understood as a reader-facing interpretation of ongoing development and reported momentum. The more grounded conclusion is that OSRS has earned a future beyond its 2007 roots, while whether that future proves to be its best era remains open.
