Once a Relative Haven for Adult Games, Itch.io Begins Removing Explicit Titles

Itch.io’s July 2025 action hid adult NSFW projects from search and browse pages amid payment-compliance pressure. Many titles were deindexed rather than deleted, while free adult content later began returning under strict conditions.

Itch.io’s July 2025 crackdown made thousands of adult projects far harder to find, but “removed” is not always the right word. On July 24, the platform deindexed adult NSFW content from its browse and search pages while beginning a broader compliance audit. Many projects appear to have remained hosted and reachable through direct links or existing buyer libraries, while other pages were permanently removed or had their files withdrawn.

The immediate pressure came from payment-processing concerns surrounding adult content, including scrutiny linked to the game No Mercy and an advocacy campaign by Collective Shout. Itch.io said it needed to protect the payment infrastructure that allows the platform to operate and pay creators. The decision nevertheless swept in lawful fictional and illustrated adult work, along with projects involving queer identity, sexuality, and other mature themes. Free adult content began returning to search and browse on July 31, but paid adult content was not restored wholesale in the material reviewed.

What itch.io actually changed

On July 24, 2025, itch.io announced that it had deindexed all adult NSFW content from its browse and search pages. The company apologized for the sudden disruption and said the pages would remain deindexed while it carried out a comprehensive audit.

That distinction is important. Deindexing primarily changed discoverability: a project could disappear from ordinary storefront navigation without necessarily being deleted from itch.io. The platform said affected pages could remain available through direct links, and that buyers who already owned products should continue to access them through their libraries, assuming the creator had not removed the page or files.

Other projects did face more serious action. Itch.io said some pages would be permanently removed, and some projects received content notices or were subject to individual business-support decisions. As a result, “removed” accurately describes certain titles, but “hidden from search,” “deindexed,” or “made undiscoverable” is more precise for the larger group of projects that remained hosted but disappeared from catalog navigation.

Term Practical meaning
Deindexed Removed from public browse and search results. A direct URL or existing library entry may still work.
Content notice A page is flagged for review or given a warning, with the outcome potentially handled individually.
Removed The project page or its files are taken down and are no longer available through the normal page.
Payment-disabled A project may qualify for the initial free-content reindexing path, but it cannot use itch.io payments while in that state.

The timeline: from No Mercy to a partial restoration

April 2025: No Mercy is banned

No Mercy had been temporarily available on itch.io before the platform banned it in April 2025. The game became the flashpoint for a larger dispute over sexually explicit and abusive themes on digital storefronts.

July 14: Collective Shout pressures payment companies

Collective Shout, an Australian advocacy organization focused on sexual exploitation, published a July 14 media release saying that it and allied organizations had asked seven payment and card companies to stop processing transactions for games featuring rape, incest, and child-abuse themes.

The group said its campaign followed its earlier efforts against No Mercy. It asked payment gateways to stop processing payments for Steam, itch.io, and other platforms hosting similar games.

That chronology should not be reduced to “Collective Shout ordered itch.io to delete adult games.” The documented action by Collective Shout was pressure directed at payment gateways. Itch.io made the platform decision and described its own concerns about compliance, payment access, and the stability of its infrastructure.

July 24: adult NSFW pages are deindexed

Itch.io announced the broad deindexing action on July 24. The company said the immediate pressure was connected to scrutiny of content hosted on itch.io and Steam, including concerns directed to payment processors after the No Mercy controversy.

Itch.io said payment processing was critical to the platform’s ability to operate and to pay creators. It also said the situation was developing too quickly for advance notice to be realistically possible. That explanation addressed the urgency, but it did not lessen the practical impact on creators whose pages suddenly lost their primary source of traffic.

July 28: itch.io explains why the review was broad

In a July 28 addendum, itch.io emphasized the difficulty of conducting a narrow, title-by-title review. The platform said it had more than two million product pages and operated as an open user-generated-content platform, where creators can publish with relatively few barriers.

Itch.io’s position was that creator-provided tags were not reliable enough to identify every potentially problematic page with confidence. Instead of relying on a perfectly accurate set of tags or manually reviewing only a small group of titles, it launched a much broader audit of adult-tagged and otherwise NSFW-associated content.

Contemporary industry reporting estimated that more than 20,000 games disappeared from itch.io’s NSFW category. That number should be treated as a reported estimate, not an audited platform-wide total. The available material does not establish how many of those projects were permanently deleted, how many were merely deindexed, or how many were later restored.

July 30: alternative payment processors are explored

Itch.io said it was contacting other payment processors that might be more willing to support adult content. At that point, the status of Stripe and PayPal remained unsettled, and the platform had suspended Stripe payments for 18-plus content for the foreseeable future.

July 31: free adult content begins returning

On July 31, itch.io began reindexing free adult NSFW content. The restoration was conditional: eligible projects had to have payments disabled. Itch.io also warned creators to review their pricing settings, because changing those settings could make individually priced files freely available.

The platform said it was still discussing payment support and would reintroduce paid content slowly. It also announced plans for a content-warning system for NSFW pages. This was therefore a partial restoration, not a complete reversal of the crackdown.

Why payment processors became the center of the dispute

Itch.io’s creator FAQ says the platform relies on Stripe and PayPal for transactions. Creators who collect money must comply with the acceptable-use policies of the payment processors connected to their accounts.

According to itch.io’s stated rules, prohibited or unsupported themes include:

  • Non-consensual sexual content;
  • Underage or “barely legal” themes;
  • Incest or pseudo-incest;
  • Bestiality or animal-related sexual content;
  • Rape or coercion;
  • Sex-trafficking implications;
  • Voyeurism;
  • Certain extreme bodily-waste or harm fetishes; and
  • Sexual depictions of minors or minor-presenting characters.

The same FAQ says fictional, illustrated, and rendered adult content is generally allowed when legal. It distinguishes that material from sexualized images or videos of real-life people and from the prohibited categories above. Those are itch.io’s platform and payment-compliance rules, not an independent legal finding about any specific title.

Stripe was reported by WIRED as unwilling to support adult content “designed for sexual gratification,” based on itch.io’s account of the situation. Mastercard told WIRED that it had not evaluated individual games or required restrictions on gaming platforms, while also describing requirements for controls against unlawful adult content.

Those statements leave the exact chain of events partly opaque. The evidence does not establish that Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, or PayPal jointly issued one public directive requiring itch.io to remove every NSFW title. The more defensible description is that itch.io reported scrutiny and payment-infrastructure risk; advocacy groups pressured payment gateways; and payment companies maintained or described their own compliance frameworks.

Why the policy caught more than illegal or exploitative material

The stated concern was not simply “all adult games are illegal.” Itch.io’s own rules distinguish between legal fictional adult work and prohibited depictions involving minors, coercion, exploitation, or other restricted themes.

The operational problem was scale. On a platform with more than two million product pages and a large amount of user-generated content, itch.io said it could not confidently separate every prohibited or risky page from lawful adult material using existing creator tags. A broad NSFW review was easier to implement quickly than a reliable, narrowly targeted audit.

That choice produced collateral effects. Reports from creators and critics described games, comics, books, and other projects involving queer identity, sexuality, and mature themes becoming difficult to discover. Marginalized developers worried that payment compliance could operate as an imprecise cultural filter, affecting legitimate work because it was associated with adult or sexual subject matter.

Those criticisms are documented reactions from creators and communities, not proof that every affected title was improperly removed. The platform’s stated concern was payment and content compliance, while the criticism focused on the breadth of the response and the power of financial intermediaries to reshape what can be found and sold online.

What the crackdown meant for creators

1. Discoverability fell even when a project remained hosted

For many creators, the most immediate loss was not file hosting but storefront traffic. Removal from search and browse pages can cut off discovery by users who do not already know a project’s name or URL. A direct link may remain functional, but it is a much weaker substitute for appearing in a category, search result, recommendation, or themed collection.

This distinction particularly affects smaller developers, writers, comic creators, and experimental projects that depend on platform discovery rather than an established audience. A page can technically exist while becoming commercially invisible.

2. Paid content faced a separate payment problem

Even if a paid adult project was not permanently deleted, payment support could be unavailable or uncertain. Itch.io said Stripe payments for 18-plus content were suspended for the foreseeable future and that it was investigating alternative processors.

The platform’s FAQ also warns that policy violations can lead to permanent administrative action without appeal. It says funds held in violating accounts may not be eligible for payout. That creates a risk beyond lost traffic: creators may face uncertainty about whether sales can be processed and whether accumulated funds will be released.

3. The return path was not guaranteed

Itch.io described an ongoing audit and said some pages would be permanently removed. The reviewed sources do not provide a definitive platform-wide count of titles that were deleted, titles that were merely hidden, or paid adult titles that later returned.

Creators therefore could not treat deindexing as a temporary search outage with a known restoration date. Each project’s outcome could depend on its content, tags, payment settings, files, and the platform’s individual compliance decision.

What the crackdown meant for buyers

Buyers experienced a different kind of disruption. A title could become difficult or impossible to locate through itch.io’s storefront even if its page remained live. Buyers who had already purchased a product generally had a stated route through their libraries.

Itch.io said the July changes should not remove paid products from existing libraries, provided the creator had not removed the page or files. That is an important protection, but it is not an absolute guarantee of perpetual access. If a creator later deletes the project or withdraws its files, the library entry may no longer provide the same usable content.

Free projects could also disappear from ordinary discovery during the deindexing period. The July 31 restoration improved the position for eligible free adult content, but only after creators disabled payments and subject to the platform’s review and planned warning system.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.
  • As a platform operation: itch.io characterized the action as an urgent compliance and infrastructure measure intended to protect its ability to process payments and pay creators.
  • As a user experience: the action functioned like a broad suppression of discoverability, because many adult projects stopped appearing in search and browse pages without being individually proven to violate a law.
  • As a creator-rights issue: critics described it as censorship or financial censorship because payment companies and platform policies could determine which lawful fictional works could be found or monetized.

“Censorship” is therefore a characterization used by critics and affected creators, not an uncontested description established by the platform’s announcements. At the same time, calling the event merely a technical safety update would omit the real effect: lawful adult projects lost visibility and, in some cases, access to monetization.

What remains unresolved

Several questions were still open in the latest developments covered by the research:

  • How many titles were permanently removed? No definitive platform-wide count was provided.
  • How many were only deindexed? The available estimates do not cleanly separate hidden pages from deleted projects.
  • Were paid adult games restored? Free adult NSFW content began returning on July 31, but the reviewed sources do not establish a complete restoration of paid adult content.
  • Did the major card networks require a blanket removal? The evidence does not show that Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, or PayPal publicly issued one uniform order covering every NSFW title.
  • Will alternative processors solve the problem? Itch.io said it was contacting processors more willing to support adult content, but the reviewed material does not establish a final replacement arrangement.
  • Will content warnings replace broad deindexing? Itch.io announced plans for a warning system, but the research does not establish the system’s completed scope or whether it would restore all affected paid projects.

The most accurate conclusion is that itch.io’s July 2025 action was a broad, staged response to payment and content-compliance pressure. It was not presented as a blanket legal ban on adult games, but it had a sweeping practical effect on the visibility and monetization of adult work. The first restoration was limited to free content, leaving the future of paid adult projects uncertain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did itch.io delete all adult games in July 2025?

No. Itch.io deindexed adult NSFW content from browse and search pages, which made many projects undiscoverable without necessarily deleting them. Some pages or files were permanently removed, but the available evidence does not show that every adult game was deleted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Could buyers still access adult games they had already purchased?

Itch.io said buyers should retain access through their libraries, provided the creator had not removed the project page or files. That was a stated access path, not an absolute guarantee of permanent availability.

Did Collective Shout directly order itch.io to remove adult content?

The documented action was different: Collective Shout said it and allied organizations had pressured payment and card companies over games involving rape, incest, and child-abuse themes. Itch.io made the decision to deindex adult NSFW content and connected its action to the resulting payment scrutiny.

Was free adult content restored?

Itch.io began reindexing free adult NSFW content on July 31, 2025. Eligible projects had to have payments disabled. The platform said paid content would be reintroduced slowly while payment discussions continued.

Did payment companies require itch.io to remove every NSFW title?

The reviewed evidence does not establish a single uniform public directive from Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, or PayPal requiring the removal of every NSFW title. Itch.io reported payment-infrastructure risk, while payment companies described their own compliance policies and advocacy groups pressured payment gateways.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Itch.io’s July 2025 crackdown was broader than a conventional takedown campaign. The platform hid adult NSFW projects from search and browse pages while auditing content under pressure connected to payment processing. Some titles were deleted, but many were primarily made undiscoverable. Free adult content began returning under payment-disabled conditions on July 31; the status of paid adult projects remained unsettled.
