Are Once Human specializations still in the game? The developer said on March 19, 2026, that the entire Tech specialization system would be removed. That makes older “10 best specializations” lists potentially outdated, not a reliable guide to current choices. The announced replacement distributes former effects across Tech unlocks, enhancements, some class abilities, wilderness exploration, and enhanced facilities. Because the official announcements do not establish the live options in every region or platform, check your current client before choosing a build.
What happened to Once Human specializations?
On March 19, 2026, the Once Human developer stated: “The entire Tech specialization system will be removed.” The announcement described moving former abilities and items into other parts of progression, including Tech-node unlocks, Tech enhancements, some class abilities, wilderness exploration, and enhanced facilities. Read the developer’s March 19 Tech-system update.
This followed a March 2 overhaul proposal describing four Tech branches—Survival, Production, Combat, and Building—and progression driven by exploration rather than character level or seasonal phase. The later announcement changed the plan for the specialization system, so the four-branch proposal should not be treated as proof that those branches or a particular set of choices are currently available. Read the March 2 Tech-system announcement.
Why older “best specialization” lists may mislead
Older guides describe a system where players received randomized specialization cards every five levels, starting at level 5, and accumulated about ten by level 50. A July 2026 guide also discusses Specialization Cleaners and recommends options for the Way of Winter scenario. Those details are legacy advice: the guide’s account conflicts with the developer’s March 19 removal announcement, so it does not establish the current rules or best picks. See the July 2026 guide’s account of the older system.
#1 Best Overall
- LEARN THE HUMAN BODY THROUGH PLAY: Core Five is a fast-paced STEM card game that teaches kids ages 6+ real anatomy — organ location, function, and fun facts — without it ever feeling like a lesson.
- PERFECT FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT & HOMESCHOOL: A go-to educational card game for family game nights, homeschooling, and classrooms — screen-free learning the whole family enjoys together.
- 56 CARDS, 8 ORGANS, ENDLESS FUN: Each card covers organ location, importance, what helps or hurts it, and related medical professions — real science content packed into quick, replayable rounds.
- SIMPLE RULES, FAST ROUNDS: Collect 5 cards and shout "Core Five" (or 6 in Bonus Mode) — easy enough for ages 6+ to learn in minutes, engaging enough for repeat play.
- BONUS KNOWLEDGE ROUND: Winners ask an organ question to the table — first correct answer scores bonus points, turning every game into an extra round of learning.
The developer had already discussed the problems with random, level-gated specialization mechanics in a June 2025 class-system preview, describing classes as an alternative approach. That is useful context for the design changes, but it is not confirmation of today’s available class abilities or how they compare. Read the official class-system preview.
What should you choose instead?
There is no verified, current top-ten list of named specializations established by the official announcements. Instead of following an old ranking, identify the role you want to support and look for the relevant option in your live client. The March 2 announcement named these broad areas as Tech branches in its proposed overhaul; they are useful comparison categories, not a confirmed current menu:

- People are strange: we looked through the Internet and collected a load of totally-genuine, totally-weird web searches. So we decided to make a party game out of it.
- Think like a human: each round, you'll hear the first half of an internet search, like 'did dinosaurs...'. It's your job to try and figure out what came next
- Did dinosaurs go to heaven?: The higher your answers rank, the more points you'll score for you and your team - so don't be afraid to think a little weird.
- Easy to learn, quick to play: a party game for adults and teenagers, this one takes about 2 minutes to learn and 20 to play. Recommended for 3+ players and ages 14+.
- What people said: 'for once you'll be glad you didn't delete your internet history!' - @tabletopmag
- Combat: check which current unlocks or class abilities support the weapons, encounters, or team role you actually use.
- Survival and exploration: look for options that help with the demands of your scenario and the way you travel or gather.
- Production: compare crafting and resource-processing benefits against the materials and equipment you regularly need.
- Building: consider construction and facility benefits if base development is a priority.
For any specific option you find, verify its source in the current system—such as a Tech node, enhancement, class ability, found item, or facility—and compare its practical value for solo play or coordinated groups. Check scenario and platform availability, and confirm any unlock or respec cost in-game before committing. The announcements do not provide a current node-by-node ranking, universal best picks, or confirmed costs.
How to evaluate a current option
- Open the relevant progression screen in your current client. Confirm that the specialization or replacement option is actually available in your region, platform, and scenario.
- Read the effect and unlock source. Determine whether it comes from a Tech node, enhancement, class ability, wilderness find, or facility, rather than assuming an old specialization card still applies.
- Match it to your play pattern. Weigh its value for your regular combat, exploration, production, or building activities and whether you play solo or with a group.
- Check the commitment. Verify prerequisites, availability, and any cost to change or unlock it in the client. Do not rely on legacy claims about cleaners or level-based selection unless the current game confirms them.
Are named “top 10” picks reliable?
Not on the evidence available here. No official current ranking confirms ten named specializations. Dramatically named picks circulating in some 2026 lists—including “Titan’s Fortitude,” “Architect of Ruin,” and “Stardust Overload”—are not corroborated by the cited official change announcements. Treat such names and their claimed effects as unverified unless you can find them in the live game or an authoritative current developer source.
