If Once Human will not launch, begin with the current Steam requirements and the installation drive—not with random launch options. Confirm 100 GB of free space, check that Windows, RAM, graphics hardware and DirectX meet the listed baseline, then verify the installation, update Windows and the graphics driver, reboot, and test with overlays disabled. If the game still closes or never creates a window on compliant hardware, record the exact symptom and send it to Once Human customer service through the Feedback section of the official Discord.
Once Human is an online co-op MMO that released on Steam on July 9, 2024. A launch failure can mean several different things: Steam may remain on “Launching,” no window may appear, the client may open and close immediately, or a black or white screen may appear before the main menu. Those symptoms do not prove the same cause, so work through the checks in a fixed order and change one variable at a time.

Check the PC and installation before changing software
The current Steam listing is the first authority for compatibility. Meeting the minimum specification does not guarantee smooth performance, but falling below it can prevent the client from starting or make early crashes likely. Storage is a particularly easy gate to miss: the requirement is free space available to the installation, not the advertised capacity of the drive.

Valve’s listing explicitly says, “SSD is highly recommended.” A hard drive with 100 GB free can satisfy the capacity check while still producing very long loading, stalls or timeouts. Moving the installation to an SSD is a sensible test when one is available, but it is not a universal cure for driver, overlay or corrupted-file problems. Check whether the machine uses a compatible SATA or NVMe slot before buying an internal drive.

Use this troubleshooting order

Confirm free space and the target drive
Open the drive properties in Windows and verify that the drive containing the game has at least 100 GB free after downloads, updates and temporary files are accounted for. If the game is on a nearly full mechanical drive, free additional space or move the installation to an SSD before testing again. Do not treat total disk capacity as proof that the requirement is met.

Keep the platform and account path consistent
Start the game from the platform where it was installed and use the same account path for each test. Avoid switching launchers in the middle of a diagnosis, because a second launcher can use a different installation, executable, permissions context or account linkage. If you have multiple copies, identify which folder Steam is actually using before repairing files.

Use Steam’s support and file-integrity workflow
Open the game’s Steam properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Allow the scan and any replacement download to finish, then restart Steam and try again. Steam also provides a dedicated technical-issue support entry for Once Human; use it for platform-specific guidance instead of repeatedly reinstalling without recording what changed.

Install pending Windows and graphics updates
Apply outstanding Windows updates and install the current driver for your graphics card from its manufacturer’s normal update channel. Restart the PC after both updates, even if Windows does not explicitly request a reboot. A driver update that is installed but not active until restart cannot explain a successful test made before reboot.

Remove overlay and injection variables
For one clean test, close game overlays, hardware-monitoring displays, frame-rate counters, recording layers and other tools that inject into a 3D process. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every overlay is defective. Community reports associate some launch failures with overlay conflicts, but those reports are anecdotal and can change after a game or driver update. If the game launches with these tools closed, re-enable them one at a time to find the conflicting component.

Test the supported DirectX path
If the client or launcher offers a DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 choice, test the path that matches your hardware and the listing’s supported specifications. Change only that setting, launch once, and note the result. A DirectX switch is an experiment, not a guaranteed fix; restore the previous option if it makes the behavior worse. Do not add several undocumented launch flags at once, because you will not know which change affected the result.

Retry after a clean restart
After the checks above, reboot once more and launch without starting unrelated games or utilities. A clean retry separates a persistent compatibility problem from a transient process, locked file or overlay that survived the first attempt.

Match the symptom to the next useful test
Steam says “Launching,” but no window appears
First confirm that the correct installation drive has 100 GB free and that Steam is launching the installed copy rather than an old shortcut. Verify the files, close overlays and restart Steam. If the status changes back to Play without an error, record whether the process appeared briefly in Windows Task Manager; that distinction helps support staff separate an immediate process exit from a launcher hand-off failure.

The game opens and closes immediately
An instant close is consistent with a failed requirement check, a graphics-driver problem, a corrupted file or an injected overlay, but the symptom alone cannot identify which one. Compare your RAM, GPU, Windows architecture, DirectX support and processor with the current listing, then complete the integrity scan and update/reboot sequence. If the close happens only with a particular overlay or monitoring tool enabled, keep that tool off while you collect a reproducible report.
A black or white screen appears before the menu
Note whether you hear audio, see a cursor or can switch away from the window. Those observations are more useful than describing the screen as simply “broken.” Test the supported DirectX option one at a time after updating the graphics driver and verifying files. Do not assume that a blank screen proves the GPU is too weak: the listed minimum and recommended cards are separate compatibility tiers, and a blank display can also follow a driver or overlay conflict.
An error message or crash dialog appears
Copy the wording exactly, including any module name or numeric code, and note when it appears. Do not paraphrase a code as “a DirectX error” unless the dialog says so. Include the message with your Windows version, GPU model, DirectX option, platform and the date of the last game or driver update when contacting support. Exact text gives the support team a way to distinguish a missing component, permission issue or graphics initialization failure.
How to use launcher or launch-option experiments safely
Players have reported occasional improvement after changing launch options or trying another launcher, but these are community observations rather than a universal, officially confirmed remedy. Updates can change the result, and a different launcher may not use the same files or account path. If you test one, keep a short record of the original setting, the new setting and the exact symptom before and after. Revert the change if it does not help, and do not combine it with a driver, overlay and file repair at the same time.

The safest comparison is controlled: use the same Windows session, the same account, the same installation and the same background applications, then change only the launcher or one documented DirectX choice. That makes a successful launch meaningful and gives support staff a reproducible sequence rather than a list of unrelated guesses.
When the requirements are met but Once Human still will not start
The official release FAQ says that when a device exceeds the minimum requirements and the problem persists, players should use “Customer Service in the Feedback section on our Discord server.” This is the correct escalation route after the local checks, not a sign that you must buy hardware immediately.
Send a concise report containing:
- The exact symptom: no window, “Launching” then “Play,” instant close, black screen, white screen or a quoted error.
- Your platform and the launcher used for the failing installation.
- Windows edition and whether it is 64-bit.
- CPU model, installed RAM, GPU model and graphics memory.
- Whether the game is on an SSD or hard drive and how much free space remains.
- The DirectX option tested, if the client offered one.
- Whether file verification, Windows updates, graphics-driver updates, a reboot and an overlay-free launch changed anything.
- The date of the last Once Human, Windows or graphics-driver update before the failure began.
Attach the exact crash text or a screenshot when possible, while removing account identifiers and other private information. Mention whether the failure is repeatable and whether it began after an update. This information is more actionable than a general statement that the game “doesn’t work.”
What an SSD, reinstall or hardware upgrade can—and cannot—prove
An SSD addresses access speed and reduces the risk that a nearly full or very slow drive is delaying startup. It does not replace missing RAM, an unsupported graphics feature, a broken driver or a conflicting overlay. Likewise, reinstalling can replace damaged files, but it will not correct a Windows architecture mismatch or an incompatible GPU. Perform the integrity check and record the symptom before spending money; otherwise you may lose the evidence needed to identify the real cause.
There is no published independent launch-failure rate that can tell you how common any one cause is. Treat community patterns as leads, not statistics, and treat the Steam listing and official support guidance as the baseline for compatibility and escalation.
