Once Human launched on Steam on July 9, 2024, so the Windows Central headline “Once Human is looking really good ahead of its launch” is now a historical preview, not a current release announcement. The game is a free-to-play post-apocalyptic survival title built around exploration, combat, crafting and territory building. Windows Central’s Michael Hoglund came away intrigued after a 12-hour demo, while noting that the demo had rough edges.
What Once Human is—and when it launched
Once Human is a multiplayer survival game set in a strange, post-apocalyptic world. Steam’s description and feature list point to a mix of environmental survival, monster and boss fights, weapon gathering and crafting, exploration of factions and settlements, and building and relocating a player territory. The preview also framed it as a blend of open-world survival, PvE and PvP combat, and multiplayer play.
The game was released on Steam on July 9, 2024. Steam lists Starry Studio as developer and Starry Studio and NetEase Games as publishers, and labels the game free to play. Steam’s Once Human listing is the place to check for current storefront details.
Why the preview was optimistic
In his June 30, 2024 Windows Central preview, Michael Hoglund wrote that the combination of systems made him want to play more; he reported spending 12 hours with the demo. That is one author’s impression of a specific demo, not a measure of the final game or a broader player consensus. The preview’s original “ahead of launch” framing reflected the build and expectations at the time.
#1 Best Overall
- LEARN THE HUMAN BODY THROUGH PLAY: Core Five is a fast-paced STEM card game that teaches kids ages 6+ real anatomy — organ location, function, and fun facts — without it ever feeling like a lesson.
- PERFECT FOR FAMILY GAME NIGHT & HOMESCHOOL: A go-to educational card game for family game nights, homeschooling, and classrooms — screen-free learning the whole family enjoys together.
- 56 CARDS, 8 ORGANS, ENDLESS FUN: Each card covers organ location, importance, what helps or hurts it, and related medical professions — real science content packed into quick, replayable rounds.
- SIMPLE RULES, FAST ROUNDS: Collect 5 cards and shout "Core Five" (or 6 in Bonus Mode) — easy enough for ages 6+ to learn in minutes, engaging enough for repeat play.
- BONUS KNOWLEDGE ROUND: Winners ask an organ question to the table — first correct answer scores bonus points, turning every game into an extra round of learning.
Hoglund also identified inconsistent dialogue presentation and controller-support problems in that demo. He noted that the build was older than a later beta and that some issues were said to be polished or planned for release. Those comments describe the June 2024 demo experience; they do not establish that the same defects are present in the current version. Read the original Windows Central preview for its dated impressions.
Is Once Human free to play, and what about purchases?
Steam currently lists Once Human as free to play and discloses both in-app purchases and chance-based in-game purchases. The reviewed sources do not establish current item prices or whether purchases affect gameplay balance. The preview’s cautious optimism about pre-launch assurances against pay-to-win mechanics was commentary made before release, not proof of present-day balance.

- People are strange: we looked through the Internet and collected a load of totally-genuine, totally-weird web searches. So we decided to make a party game out of it.
- Think like a human: each round, you'll hear the first half of an internet search, like 'did dinosaurs...'. It's your job to try and figure out what came next
- Did dinosaurs go to heaven?: The higher your answers rank, the more points you'll score for you and your team - so don't be afraid to think a little weird.
- Easy to learn, quick to play: a party game for adults and teenagers, this one takes about 2 minutes to learn and 20 to play. Recommended for 3+ players and ages 14+.

Windows Central’s July 4, 2024 FAQ said the planned PC launch was on Steam and the Epic Games Store on July 9, 2024, and described the game as free to play with microtransactions. That FAQ is useful for understanding the launch plan, but the current Epic availability was not established by the sources reviewed here. See the 2024 Windows Central FAQ.
