One Hour One Life is a multiplayer survival and civilization-building game by Jason Rohrer. You begin life as a baby born to another player, grow older at an accelerated pace, and have about an hour to contribute to a world that continues beyond your character’s death. Its central contrast is a short individual life inside a much longer, shared story.
What is One Hour One Life?
Released on Steam on November 8, 2018, One Hour One Life is an indie massively multiplayer simulation developed and published by Jason Rohrer, according to its Steam listing. Rather than treating each session as a self-contained survival run, the game places each player in a community whose work and technology can span many generations.
The official website describes the premise as “playing one small part in a much larger story.” A character’s life is brief, but the world and its accumulated technology are meant to outlast that character, so what you learn or make can matter to people who come later. The official game website presents this long-view civilization as the core idea.
How does the one-hour life work?
Players are born to another player, who becomes their in-game mother. Jason Rohrer’s Steam description says, “First of all, you only live for an hour, where each minute marks a passing year.” That accelerated clock compresses a character’s life into a short session: you enter as a newborn, grow through the years, and may eventually have player-controlled children of your own. The exact circumstances of a life depend on the shared world and the other players in it.

This structure makes the game’s timescale unusual: an hour is not simply a play session imposed on an otherwise conventional survival game; it is the lifespan around which its generational premise is organized. The individual run ends, while the civilization can continue.
What do you do in the shared world?
The game combines survival with crafting and community-building. Because players arrive in different generations of an ongoing world, the practical value of a run is not limited to personal progress. A player can contribute work, knowledge, or resources that help the people who follow. The design’s central trade-off is clear: you have little time as one character, but your contribution may become part of a much larger chain of lives.

Who might enjoy One Hour One Life?
The premise is likely to appeal to players who enjoy multiplayer survival, crafting, and the idea of helping a persistent community rather than building only for an individual avatar. It is a less natural fit for someone who wants a private, pause-anytime experience or dislikes relying on other players: being born into another player’s care is part of the game’s starting concept, not an optional framing device.
The one-hour lifespan also makes time commitment an important personal consideration. The game’s creator describes a life as roughly one hour, with each minute representing a year; whether that concentrated, shared run suits you depends on how you like to spend a session. The game’s official descriptions establish the intended structure, but they do not by themselves establish current server activity, moderation quality, or the present character of its community.
