Seattle studio One More Game shelved its competitive fantasy strategy game Spellcraft after more than three years of development and restarted around SWAPMEAT, a comedic co-op shooter set on alien worlds. The change reshaped the project’s genre, audience, engine, player count and business model: the studio moved from a planned 1v1 free-to-play game to an upfront-purchase game built around playing with friends.
Why One More Game abandoned Spellcraft
One More Game had spent more than three years developing Spellcraft, a hybrid real-time strategy game centered on competitive play. In an October 17, 2025 interview with GeekWire, co-founder Jamie Stormbreaker said the studio lacked confidence that the game’s 1v1, free-to-play model fit its company values. He also described seeing interest shift toward games people could play with friends rather than competitive matches with strangers. That was his account of the studio’s decision and observations, not evidence of a universal change in player preferences.
Stormbreaker said the decision was to switch gears rather than continue pushing Spellcraft forward. GeekWire reported that One More Game had secured $22 million in funding in 2022, before the decision to shelve the project; the report does not say that the full amount was spent on Spellcraft.
What changed in the reboot
The reboot was more than a new setting or title. One More Game changed the type of game it was making, its intended social experience and how players would pay for it.

| Element | Spellcraft | SWAPMEAT |
|---|---|---|
| Genre | Hybrid real-time strategy | Comedic, squad-based third-person shooter |
| Player relationship | Competitive 1v1 play | Co-op play with friends; the initial Early Access build supported up to four players |
| Business model | Planned free-to-play | Described by the studio as an upfront-purchase game |
| Core play | Competitive strategy matches | Fight alien enemies, scavenge their body parts and attach them to gain abilities |
Stormbreaker described the studio’s new approach to value this way: “When you buy something from us, we want to respect your time and give you great value.” He also said the team wanted to make a game players could keep in their Steam libraries. Those statements explain the thinking behind the purchase model; they are the founders’ goals, not a guarantee about the finished game.
What is SWAPMEAT?
SWAPMEAT is a comedic cooperative shooter about fighting across alien worlds and changing your character by taking body parts from defeated enemies. Those parts grant abilities, making scavenging and swapping them central to the game rather than a cosmetic side activity. One More Game’s “meat mixing” shorthand for that mechanic became the basis of the title.

How the studio says it develops SWAPMEAT
Stormbreaker called One More Game’s method “alpha-driven development”: show players an early version, listen to criticism, make changes and bring back another iteration. GeekWire reported that the studio took the game to PAX East, Gamescom and PAX West in 2025 and adjusted it based on feedback. The approach shows how the studio says it gathers input; it does not establish that the game will succeed commercially.
GeekWire described One More Game as a fully remote, 13-person team in its October 2025 report. The same report identifies Stormbreaker and Patrick Wyatt as co-founders, noting Wyatt’s work at Blizzard and co-founding of ArenaNet, and Stormbreaker’s previous work at ArenaNet, Riot Games and Undead Labs. The team size is a snapshot from that report, not a current headcount.
