A 2020 MeriStation review praised its cel-shaded look but criticized repetitive combat, limited mechanics, dated environments, and sexualized character framing. That review estimated the main story at about 6–7 hours, though your time will vary. It is most appealing if you want straightforward hack-and-slash action and enjoy its distinctive tone—not if you expect a deep combat system or a long campaign.
What is Onee Chanbara Origin?
Published by D3Publisher and developed by Tamsoft, Onee Chanbara Origin reworks the stories of the first two PlayStation 2 entries, THE OneeChanbara and THE OneeChanbara 2, into one game. D3Publisher describes it as a sword-fighting action story about half-sisters Aya and Saki, who hate one another, in a dystopian Tokyo overrun by the Undead. The publisher says the characters were redesigned by Katsumi Enami. D3Publisher’s official game page has the premise and character information.
The setup is easy to follow without knowing the earlier games: Aya and Saki’s conflict sits at the center of a zombie-filled action story. The franchise background is mainly useful if you want to understand that this is a reinterpretation of older series entries rather than a wholly new standalone concept.
What do reviews say about the combat?
In a review published November 13, 2020, Cristian Ciuraneta Catalán of MeriStation described the combat as repetitive and monotonous, with limited mechanics and few gameplay options. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a review-aggregate result or evidence of a current critical consensus. The same review says higher difficulty can add challenge after the campaign, but does not fundamentally change the combat system. Read the MeriStation review.
#1 Best Overall
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
In practical terms, expect a relatively straightforward action loop rather than a combat system with extensive tactical variety. The higher-difficulty option may suit players who want a tougher replay, but the review’s account suggests it is not a solution for anyone who finds the underlying mechanics too repetitive.
How long is the story?
MeriStation’s 2020 review estimates about 6–7 hours for the main adventure. This is the reviewer’s estimate, not a guaranteed completion time or a publisher-provided runtime; difficulty, pace, and how much optional content you pursue can change your playtime. The estimate appears in the review.

How does it look and sound?
The MeriStation reviewer considered the anime-influenced cel-shading a good fit, while criticizing the character models and especially the environments as dated. The review also noted that visual effects make combat more striking in motion. This points to a presentation that may appeal if you like the art direction, even if its surroundings and models do not feel technically current.
The same review criticized weak lip synchronization and understated music. It also objected to how the protagonists are sexualized in the game’s framing. Those descriptors are useful for setting expectations, but apply to the listing in that store and are not a substitute for checking the rating information in your region.
