OneXPlayer OneXFly Apex: Liquid Cooling, Strix Halo Power and the Handheld Trade-Off

The OneXFly Apex is a powerful Strix Halo Windows handheld, but its headline 120W mode requires an external Frost Bay liquid-cooling station. Here is what the launch claims, current listings and portability trade-offs mean.

The OneXPlayer OneXFly Apex is a high-end Windows gaming handheld built around AMD’s Strix Halo platform. Its defining feature is not a liquid loop inside the handheld, but an optional external Frost Bay cooling station that raises the advertised power ceiling from roughly 80W with built-in air cooling to up to 120W when connected. That makes the Apex potentially one of the fastest integrated-graphics handheld PCs available—but also turns its maximum-performance mode into a desk-oriented setup.

There is also an important specification discrepancy: launch and Japanese-release materials identify a Ryzen AI Max+ 395, while the current global OneXPlayer store listing reviewed for this article presents Ryzen AI Max+ 388 configurations. Those should not be treated as one universal specification.

What is the OneXFly Apex?

The OneXFly Apex—also called the OneXPlayer Apex or ONEXPLAYER APEX—is an enthusiast-class Windows gaming handheld from One-Netbook, sold under the OneXPlayer brand. It is aimed less at Steam Deck-style mass-market simplicity and more at buyers who want a compact Windows PC with unusually high CPU, integrated-GPU and memory capacity.

The Apex’s headline platform is AMD Strix Halo, a Ryzen AI Max family design combining Zen 5 CPU cores, a Radeon 8060S-class integrated GPU, high-bandwidth unified memory and an XDNA-based NPU. Unlike a conventional gaming laptop with a discrete graphics card, the Apex’s CPU and GPU share system memory. That design can deliver substantial integrated-graphics performance, but it makes power delivery, cooling, memory bandwidth and software settings especially important.

OneXPlayer has marketed the Apex as a flagship and, in some coverage, as the world’s first liquid-cooled gaming handheld. The latter is a company claim. More importantly, the liquid cooling is an external accessory rather than a self-contained system hidden inside the handheld.

How the Frost Bay liquid cooler works

In normal portable use, the Apex relies on its built-in air-cooling system. The current product listing advertises operation up to approximately 80W in that configuration. Attach the separate Frost Bay cooling station, connect the external tubing and use a suitable power setup, and OneXPlayer advertises up to 120W operation.

That additional thermal headroom is intended for sustained plugged-in workloads: demanding games, high frame-rate targets, rendering, local AI and other desktop-replacement tasks. A higher power limit can let the processor and integrated GPU sustain higher clocks, but it does not guarantee a fixed performance increase. Gains depend on the game engine, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame generation, driver and firmware versions, memory allocation and any other power limits in the system.

The practical distinction: the Apex has two operating identities.

  • Portable mode: a powerful, air-cooled Windows handheld using its removable battery.
  • Maximum-performance mode: a plugged-in compact gaming system connected to the Frost Bay desk setup.

The second mode is the reason to buy the Apex for peak performance, but it is also the feature that most complicates the word “handheld.” The Frost Bay adds tubing, a separate cooling station and a desk-bound footprint. It is not something most owners will carry around for a quick gaming session.

Specifications: launch announcement versus current listing

OneXPlayer’s launch materials and later store listings do not describe exactly the same configuration. The following separation is important when comparing prices or hardware.

Why Strix Halo matters

AMD describes the Ryzen AI Max+ family as a high-end mobile platform with Zen 5 CPU cores, Radeon 8060S graphics, unified memory and an NPU for AI workloads. AMD’s January 2026 documentation lists the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 and 388 with a configurable 45W–120W TDP range, 40 graphics compute units and 50 NPU TOPS.

Shared memory is central to the design. The integrated GPU can draw from the same high-bandwidth memory pool used by the CPU, allowing far more graphics memory than typical handheld APUs. However, selecting 64GB or 128GB does not automatically make games faster. Capacity helps prevent memory pressure and can be valuable for local AI models, development, emulation, content creation and workstation use; gaming performance still depends heavily on bandwidth, power, cooling and software optimization.

Performance claims and what they mean

At the Apex launch event, OneXPlayer presented the following 3DMark Time Spy results, reported by HotHardware:

Advertised power mode Reported Time Spy score
40W 4,083
55W 9,035
80W 10,518
120W 12,146

HotHardware reported that the 80W result was roughly comparable to a desktop GeForce RTX 4060 score in that particular test, while the 120W result was approximately 15% higher. That does not mean the Apex universally performs like or exceeds an RTX 4060. These were launch-event figures, not independent laboratory results, and the comparison depends on test configuration.

OneXPlayer also presented game figures of 120 frames per second in Black Myth: Wukong, 98fps in Cyberpunk 2077 and 158fps in Forza Horizon 5 at 1080p and 120W under selected settings. The reports do not establish every preset, upscaling mode, frame-generation setting, driver, BIOS version, ambient temperature or whether the numbers were averages or peaks. Treat them as manufacturer-presented launch claims rather than universal expectations.

The 120Hz display and VRR support are useful because they allow the screen to adapt to changing frame rates. They do not mean demanding games will routinely run at 120fps, especially on battery or at the lower air-cooled power limit.

Display, storage and controls

The 8-inch 1,920×1,200 panel uses a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. That combination provides more screen area than a typical 16:9 handheld and should suit both games and Windows applications. VRR can reduce tearing when frame rates fluctuate. The reported 500-nit brightness and 100% sRGB coverage belong to launch reporting and should be verified against the exact retail configuration.

Storage is unusually flexible for a handheld. The Apex has an internal PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 SSD slot and an external Mini SSD expansion bay. The full-size internal slot is familiar to PC builders; Mini SSD expansion may be convenient, but it is a less common format and should be considered when estimating upgrade cost and availability.

OneXPlayer lists Hall-sensing controls, adjustable two-stage triggers, vibration adjustment, dual Harman-tuned speakers and a fingerprint power button. These features add enthusiast-oriented flexibility, though Windows itself still requires more configuration and maintenance than a console-focused handheld operating system.

Battery and mobility

The 85Wh battery is removable and can be swapped or replaced. OneXPlayer also sells a dedicated charging dock for the battery. Removing the battery can make a plugged-in setup lighter, while an additional battery can be useful for long sessions away from an outlet.

Capacity alone does not establish battery life. Runtime will vary with the TDP setting, display brightness, refresh rate, VRR, game workload, battery health, peripherals and Windows background activity. High-power Strix Halo operation can drain even an 85Wh battery quickly, and the advertised 120W mode is fundamentally a plugged-in Frost Bay scenario rather than a battery mode.

Price and availability

The Apex was announced in September 2025 and launched through Indiegogo in November 2025. Early coverage reported campaign pricing from $1,399, with higher configurations reaching roughly $2,299. Notebookcheck later reported global ordering, with initial shipping expected on January 31, 2026. Those figures describe the campaign or launch period and should not be presented as today’s universal retail price.

The global OneXPlayer store page reviewed for this article displayed a sale price of approximately $1,839 for one selected configuration, while another displayed variant reached $2,399. The selector includes standard and liquid-cooling versions, 48GB or 64GB memory, 1TB or 2TB storage and Frost Bay bundles. The $1,839 figure therefore applies to the selected configuration, not every Apex model. Prices and bundle contents can change.

A Japanese domestic release was announced for mid-March 2026. The listed prices were ¥349,800 for a standard Ryzen AI Max+ 395, 48GB, 1TB configuration; ¥359,800 for the liquid-cooling-compatible version; and ¥29,800 for Frost Bay. The announcement also listed a dedicated battery at ¥15,000, a charging dock at ¥7,800 and a protective case at ¥3,300. These Japan-specific prices should not be converted directly into U.S. retail pricing.

For the intended 120W setup, calculate the cost of the complete system rather than only the handheld: Frost Bay, additional batteries, a charging dock, storage, case, shipping and possible import charges may all matter. Before buying from an international seller, check the warranty-return destination, import taxes, charger certification, replacement-battery availability, dead-pixel policy, battery coverage and return-shipping responsibility.

Who should buy the OneXFly Apex?

The Apex makes the most sense for an enthusiast who regularly plays plugged in and wants the fastest possible integrated-graphics experience in a controller-equipped Windows PC. It is also unusually interesting for buyers who need large unified-memory pools for local AI, development, emulation or content creation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose it if maximum APU performance matters more than simplicity.
  • Choose it if an 8-inch 16:10 120Hz VRR display is valuable to you.
  • Choose it if you want a replaceable battery and dual storage expansion.
  • Choose the Frost Bay bundle only if you expect to use the device at a desk and want sustained high-power operation.

Who should skip it?

The Apex is a poor match for buyers seeking a light travel console, quiet self-contained maximum performance, mainstream retail support or a low-cost entry into PC handheld gaming. It is also difficult to justify the largest memory configurations for gaming alone unless a specific workload benefits from them.

If you rarely play near an outlet, the 120W headline is of limited practical value. If you want console-like software simplicity, Windows handheld maintenance may be frustrating. And if the Frost Bay remains permanently at home, the product’s most distinctive feature becomes a desk accessory rather than a portable advantage.

Verdict

The OneXFly Apex is technically ambitious: Strix Halo, a large 8-inch high-refresh display, an 85Wh removable battery and up to 120W advertised operation give it capabilities well beyond ordinary handheld PCs. Its launch-event results suggest serious integrated-graphics performance, but those numbers require careful attribution and should not be treated as independent proof of RTX 4060-class gaming in every title.

The central decision is simple. Buy the Apex if you want a portable PC that can become a compact, high-power desktop gaming system when connected to Frost Bay. Skip it if “handheld” means light, untethered and self-contained at all times. Also verify the exact regional SKU: the original Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and 128GB claims do not match the Ryzen AI Max+ 388 and 48GB/64GB options visible on the current global store listing.
