onexui.dll is a Microsoft Windows system DLL used by the IEEE 802.1X supplicant user interface. If Windows says onexui.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair the Windows component first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to the native 802.1X authentication stack used for enterprise wired and wireless network authentication. It works alongside OneX, EAPHost, and Windows network profile components. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET component, or ordinary game library.

Identify the file before repairing it
Historical Windows file inventories show several builds of onexui.dll. These versions are associated with different Windows releases and architectures, so there is no universal file version that should be copied to every computer.

| 6.2.9200.16384 | 32-bit | 1.02 MB |
| 6.1.7601.17514 | 32-bit | 1.06 MB |
Treat these as historical inventory entries, not as a download guide. On 64-bit Windows, the native 64-bit copy normally belongs in %windir%System32. The 32-bit copy normally belongs in %windir%SysWOW64, despite the name. Microsoft explains this separation through its File System Redirector documentation.

Errors associated with onexui.dll
You may see one of these messages:
- “The code execution cannot proceed because onexui.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because onexui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “onexui.dll could not be loaded.”
- “C:WindowsSystem32onexui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- An error mentioning status
0xc000007b.
The final status can indicate a malformed or architecture-incompatible DLL, but it does not prove that onexui.dll alone is responsible. The “not designed to run on Windows” wording is a standard Windows loader error form, not automatically evidence of malware.
Before changing anything, record:
- The complete error message.
- The executable or application named in the message.
- The full path shown for
onexui.dll, if one is displayed. - Your Windows version and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Whether the problem started after an update, application installation, or antivirus scan.
That information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from a rogue copy in an application folder.
Fix 1: Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
Because onexui.dll is normally a protected Windows component, this is the safest and most likely repair.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source. When it completes, continue with SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt.
Run System File Checker
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows after both commands finish, then try the affected application or network operation again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC when repairing missing or corrupted system files.

If you prefer a guided maintenance utility instead of repeatedly hunting through Windows repair steps and trying to determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair actions require the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct first path for this Microsoft-owned file.
Interpret the result
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations”: Windows did not find damaged protected files. Continue with the path, antivirus, and application checks below.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them”: Restart and test again.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them”: Restart, run DISM again, and then run
sfc /scannowa second time. - DISM reports that source files could not be found: Install pending Windows updates and retry. If the problem persists, use Windows recovery or repair options rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Check the file path and Microsoft signature
If a file exists, verify that it is the copy Windows is actually trying to load.

onexui.dll. - If you use 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the Microsoft signature and choose Details.
A missing file, an invalid signature, or a copy stored in an unexpected application directory needs further repair. Do not replace it with a file from another computer. A different Windows build can have incompatible architecture, dependencies, servicing level, or language resources.
If the error names a path such as a game, launcher, or application folder, that private copy may be stale or suspicious. Windows can search the application directory before the system directories, which creates compatibility and DLL hijacking risks. Microsoft documents this behavior in its DLL search order guidance.

Antivirus software can quarantine a damaged file, a false positive, or a malicious file using the same name.
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Choose Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving
onexui.dll. - Expand a detection to see its original path and status.
Only restore a quarantined file if all of the following are true:
- It was located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its Properties show a valid Microsoft Windows signature.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive.
- A current malware scan does not find a broader infection.
Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the device. If the file was removed from a system directory, let DISM and SFC restore the Windows component instead. Run a full scan, and use an offline scan when malware remains a concern. Microsoft describes quarantine and restore decisions in Protection History.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed update or damaged component store can leave a Windows DLL missing or mismatched.

- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run DISM and SFC again after the restart if the error remains.
On Windows 11, you may also have a repair reinstall option:
- Open Start → Settings → System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. Use it after backing up important data.

Fix 5: Repair the application that reports the error
A third-party application may be calling the Windows component incorrectly, shipping an unofficial private copy, or failing because its own installation is damaged.
First identify the executable named in the error. If the problem occurs only with one application:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, use the application’s own launcher to verify its files. Otherwise uninstall it and reinstall it from the original developer, vendor, or trusted launcher. Do not place onexui.dll into the application’s folder unless the vendor’s official support instructions specifically require it.
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the normal remedy for this file. Those packages do not normally provide onexui.dll.
Fix 6: Check architecture and rogue copies
A 32-bit process cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit process cannot use a 32-bit DLL in place of its native dependency. Microsoft documents these compatibility rules in Running 32-bit Applications.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Check System type.
On 64-bit Windows, do not swap files between System32 and SysWOW64. Remove or quarantine unofficial copies from application folders and repair the owning Windows installation or application instead.

onexui.dll is related to the Windows 802.1X authentication stack, but a network driver reinstall is not the first fix for a missing system DLL. Consider it when the error began with a network adapter failure, enterprise Wi-Fi authentication problem, or damaged adapter installation.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the connection.
If that does not help:
- Return to Device Manager.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Uninstall device.
- Confirm the uninstall.
- Restart Windows so it can reinstall the device.
- If necessary, install the driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page.
When manually checking numerous driver versions is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it reports as stale; the free scan identifies issues, while driver installation through the full version. It is optional, and a driver update will not replace the Windows-file repair path when onexui.dll itself is corrupted.
If you are looking under Windows Features, there is normally no separate “onexui.dll” feature to enable. Do not add unrelated Windows components simply because a DLL error appears.

What not to do
- Do not download
onexui.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy the file from another PC or another Windows build.
- Do not trust a file merely because its name is correct.
- Do not run
regsvr32 onexui.dllas a routine fix. - Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET just because the message mentions a DLL.
- Do not disable antivirus protection to force an unknown file into
System32. - Do not assume every
onexui.dllerror is malware-related. - Do not reinstall a network driver before repairing Windows system files unless the symptoms clearly involve the adapter.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. onexui.dll is an internal Windows authentication UI library, not a normal self-registering component, so registration is unlikely to repair it and may produce an entry-point error. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in the regsvr32 reference.
FAQ
Is onexui.dll safe?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component for IEEE 802.1X authentication. Confirm the path and Microsoft digital signature rather than trusting the filename alone.
Should I download onexui.dll separately?
No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone onexui.dll redistributable. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC, check quarantine, and use Windows recovery if needed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs onexui.dll part of a game?
It is not normally a game-specific runtime. If one game or launcher reports it, inspect the exact executable and DLL path. Repair or reinstall that application only when the failure is isolated to it.
Why does the error mention System32 on 64-bit Windows?
System32 normally contains native 64-bit system binaries on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit system binaries. The directory names do not indicate that SysWOW64 is the 64-bit location.
What if SFC says everything is fine?
Restart, check Windows Security Protection history, verify the exact path and signature, and identify the executable that is loading the DLL. The actual missing dependency may be another file.
What if Windows cannot start?
Use WinRE and run offline SFC with the actual Windows drive letter, or use System Restore and Windows repair options. Do not assume the offline Windows installation is mounted as C:.
