The Onn microSD Express cards reported at $85 for 512GB and $47 for 256GB offer two lower-cost Switch 2 storage options—but those are reported Walmart prices, not confirmed live deals or proof they are the cheapest available. The key requirement is the format: Switch 2 supports microSD Express for expanded game and save-data storage, not conventional microSD cards.
What Switch 2 storage cards can you use?
Nintendo says, “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” That requirement applies to using a card for game and save-data storage. A conventional microSD card—even one that worked with the original Switch—cannot be used for that purpose on Switch 2. Check the packaging for the words microSD Express before buying.
Nintendo lists 256GB of internal storage and supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB. The 2TB figure is the console’s compatibility limit, not a statement that every capacity is readily available to buy. Nintendo’s Switch 2 product information and Nintendo Support’s card compatibility guidance describe the storage specifications.
What are the reported Onn card prices?
Yahoo Tech’s Jeff Dunn reported Walmart prices of $85 for the Onn 512GB microSD Express card when in stock and $47 for the 256GB model. These are reported price points, not verified current listings; stock and prices can change, and the available evidence does not establish that either is the lowest price on the market. See Yahoo Tech’s microSD Express card guide for the report.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
The 512GB version gives you twice the listed capacity of the 256GB model, while the smaller card is the lower upfront-cost option. Which makes more sense depends on how much room you want beyond the console’s 256GB internal storage and the price you can confirm at checkout.
How does the Onn card compare with other Switch 2 options?
Onn is Walmart’s in-house brand, and Yahoo Tech describes the card as a rebadged product. In its testing, the publication found it somewhat slower than some alternatives, while describing the performance gap as generally small in the tested contexts. That is Yahoo Tech’s test result, not an independent benchmark here; the guide also reports a one-year warranty.

A separate GameSpot roundup of microSD Express cards lists several brand and capacity alternatives, but its prices are not a live price comparison.

What to check before buying
- Format: Choose a card explicitly labeled microSD Express; ordinary microSD is not a substitute for Switch 2 game and save-data storage.
- Capacity and price: Compare the amount of extra space you want with the retailer’s current checkout price, rather than relying on an older reported price.
- Warranty and performance claims: Check the terms for the exact model. Treat performance comparisons as specific to the publication’s test conditions, not a guarantee of identical results for every game or setup.
- Compatibility and availability: Confirm the product is a microSD Express card and that the capacity is within Nintendo’s stated limit; compatibility does not guarantee a particular card is currently in stock.
