The reviews point to an appealing wilderness-hunting premise, but uneven execution—especially repetitive tasks, frustrating difficulty, bugs, and dated presentation—kept the game from winning over critics.
What is the PC critic-review score for Open Country?
Metacritic’s PC review page showed a Metascore of 56 from six critic reviews on October 8, 2026. Five were marked mixed and one negative; none were positive. The visible individual scores ranged from 35 to 70. This is a dated snapshot of the PC aggregate, not a score for every platform or a permanent rating.
The visible reviews were published in June and July 2021. They differ in emphasis, but several share the same broad reservation: the outdoor premise has appeal, while the moment-to-moment systems and presentation are inconsistent.
What did critics like—and criticize?
The wilderness premise has breadth
Eurogamer Italy’s June 11, 2021 review praised the amount of content and the wilderness setting, including hunting, fishing, and quad racing. Official Xbox Wire material likewise describes a mix of hunting, fishing, exploration, survival, vehicles, and a hunting dog, giving a sense of the activities the game is built around: Xbox Wire’s launch announcement.

Repetition and difficulty can undercut the loop
The Games Machine described exploration and hunting but criticized repetitive tasks and missions. Multiplayer.it’s June 10 excerpt faulted the difficulty and what it called an “aggressive malus loop,” suggesting that penalties can make play feel frustrating rather than welcoming. Worth Playing, in its July 2 assessment, saw potential for players looking for an approachable hunting-and-survival structure but criticized the hunting mechanics and dated presentation.
Polish is another concern
IGN Italia’s excerpt cited bugs and a lack of polish. Together with the complaints about repetition and hunting mechanics, that points to a gap between the game’s broad outdoor activity list and how consistently those activities land in play. These are outlet-level summaries displayed on Metacritic, not a guarantee of the game’s current technical condition.

Is Open Country worth playing?
The critic consensus suggests a conditional fit. Consider it if the combination of wilderness exploration, hunting, fishing, survival activities, and vehicles is the main draw, and you are willing to tolerate uneven systems. If you want tightly varied missions, refined hunting mechanics, or a polished presentation, the criticisms in the PC reviews are meaningful reasons to be cautious.
The score does not settle how the game performs today. The cited aggregate reflects reviews from 2021; the sources checked do not establish current patch status, PC storefront availability, regional pricing, or present technical condition. Likewise, this PC critic aggregate should not be treated as a verdict on the console editions.
