“Minimal handholding” usually means fewer explicit objectives or route markers—not necessarily a world with no guidance. Open-world RPGs vary in how clearly they state a goal, how they point you toward it, how much you must learn by trial and error, and whether they let you wander into danger beyond your current ability.
What “minimal handholding” can mean
Players who ask for a game without objectives and waypoints may be looking for several different things. One person wants to choose their own goals; another wants to follow clues rather than a marked route; a third is happy to have a main story but wants room to ignore it. Those preferences overlap, but they are not the same.
- Goal clarity: Does the game give you a clear main objective, or leave you to decide what matters?
- Navigation help: Do characters, landmarks, map icons, or route markers show where to go? Must you remember or record clues?
- Learning: How much does the game explain its systems, and how much must you infer through play?
- Progression risk: Can you reach places or encounters that are too dangerous for your current abilities?
- Exploration style: Does wandering sit alongside a main story, or replace a prescribed route?
When comparing games, look at these features individually instead of treating “no handholding” as a single setting or guarantee.
Open worlds can offer freedom and still give directions
ELDEN RING: exploration with signposts
Bandai Namco’s gameplay guide describes ELDEN RING as open-world, while also explaining that Guidance of Grace points toward key locations. Its official materials describe finding map fragments, placing map markers and beacons, and using map-based travel to discovered Sites of Grace. That makes it a useful example of exploratory play with optional direction—not a direction-free world.

The map helps you orient yourself: it shows your location and terrain, and lets you mark places or note landmarks. But it is not available during battle. Bandai Namco Europe’s starter guide covers these map functions and limits.
Morrowind: the main plot or your own wandering
Bethesda’s Morrowind feature description presents the game as open-ended: you can follow the main plot, wander in search of adventure, or combine the two. That supports a broad expectation of self-directed play, but it does not establish how every individual quest gives directions.

Freedom does not mean every destination is equally safe
Open-world access and appropriate challenge are different things. In its ELDEN RING gameplay guide, Bandai Namco warns: “While the game is open world, and you certainly can go anywhere, you’ll quickly discover enemies in some zones are much deadlier than others.” The practical implication is that reaching a region does not mean you are ready to clear it. The same guide says difficult bosses can be left for later, so retreating and returning is a reasonable way to approach a challenge.

Before choosing an RPG, ask what kind of guidance you actually want less of. If you want to set your own goals, check whether the game permits wandering beyond its main story. If you want to navigate by observation, look for information about landmarks, character clues, and map markers—not just whether the game has a map. If you are comfortable with trial and error, consider whether difficulty varies by region and whether you can leave an encounter and return later.

Examples such as Outer Wilds, Breath of the Wild, and ELDEN RING appear in one player’s discussion of games with a less directed feel; that is useful as an example of how players use the phrase, not a definitive account of each game’s systems. The discussion illustrates why it helps to specify whether you mean fewer objectives, fewer waypoints, more self-directed exploration, or some combination.
