For most players, Performance Mode is the best PS5 setting if smoother, more responsive play matters most. In the September 2026 Remastered update, CD PROJEKT RED says both Performance and Ray Tracing modes target 60 FPS; Performance Mode can reach up to 90 FPS on a VRR-capable display. Choose Ray Tracing Mode instead if enhanced lighting is your priority. These are the developer’s targets, not independent test results or a guarantee for every scene and display.

Which PS5 graphics mode should you use?

Mode Best for Published frame-rate target Display note
Performance Mode Smoother, more responsive gameplay Targets 60 FPS; up to 90 FPS on VRR-capable displays The higher figure depends on a VRR-capable display.
Ray Tracing Mode Prioritizing enhanced lighting Targets 60 FPS No additional display-specific frame-rate figure is stated.

CD PROJEKT RED describes Performance Mode as offering a higher resolution while targeting 60 FPS and up to 90 FPS with VRR. The official notes do not give a resolution figure for either mode, nor do they establish a universal winner: your preference between responsiveness and lighting presentation is the deciding factor. CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered update notes describe these as targets; they do not provide independent measurements or scene-by-scene results.

What changed from the older PS5 version?

The version matters. This guidance is for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered on PS5, released September 29, 2026. The Remastered upgrade is free for qualifying existing owners in the same platform ecosystem, whether they own the game physically or digitally, according to CD PROJEKT RED’s release announcement.

Do not use the original December 2022 next-gen mode figures as the current Remastered targets. That announcement described Ray Tracing Mode as targeting 30 FPS and Performance Mode as targeting 60 FPS. In the 2026 Remastered notes, both modes target 60 FPS, with Performance Mode reaching up to 90 FPS on VRR-capable displays. The earlier figures are historical, not the current mode targets. The original mode announcement and the Remastered notes document the change.

What the Remastered update changes visually

The update announces a number of rendering improvements, including an improved shading model, updated textures and models, better grass and foliage lighting and shading, updated tone mapping, Ground Truth Ambient Occlusion as a screen-space ambient-occlusion option, ray-traced local shadows, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, and an updated HDR calibration panel. These are features of the update, not a list of PS5 sliders you can individually tune. The notes do not establish that PC-specific controls such as ULTRA+ are available on PS5. See the official visual feature notes.

PS5 Pro, VRR, and what to expect

CD PROJEKT RED lists PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), VRR, and uncapped frame rates among the PS5 Pro features. Its announcement does not give separate measured results for specific scenes or guarantee a particular frame rate on every display. Treat the up-to-90-FPS figure as conditional on a VRR-capable display, not as a promised result for every PS5 setup. The basic mode choice does not require buying a PS5 Pro or a VRR display. Details are in the Remastered announcement.
