It is not a Windows system file, so the safest repair is to identify the application requesting it and restore that application’s own native files.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL and copying it into C:\Windows\System32. The file may belong in a game folder or a launcher-created natives directory, and different applications can use different OpenAL builds.

What openal64.dll is
OpenAL is a cross-platform audio interface used by games and other applications for positional or 3D sound. The filename OpenAL64.dll is especially associated with legacy LWJGL 2, a Java game library used by older Minecraft versions and other Java/OpenGL games.
Recommended Free Tools
Legacy LWJGL 2 selects:
OpenAL64.dllfor a 64-bit application processOpenAL32.dllfor a 32-bit application process
That does not mean every 64-bit Windows installation needs OpenAL64.dll. Windows architecture and application architecture are separate. A 32-bit game running on 64-bit Windows may still request OpenAL32.dll.

Modern applications can use different names, including OpenAL.dll or OpenAL Soft’s soft_oal.dll. Those files are not automatically interchangeable with OpenAL64.dll.
There is no single universal publisher, version, file size, checksum, or installation location for openal64.dll. The correct file is the one supplied for the affected application and its exact version.
Quick identification table
| What you find | What it means | Correct starting point |
|---|---|---|
| The error names a game executable | That game or its launcher is requesting the library | Verify or repair the game files |
| The error names a Java launcher or older Minecraft version | A native LWJGL file may not have been extracted | Repair the affected instance or version |
OpenAL64.dll is missing from a natives folder |
The launcher likely failed to download or extract its native files | Recreate or repair that instance |
OpenAL32.dll exists but OpenAL64.dll does not |
The files are not interchangeable by filename alone | Confirm the process architecture and restore the matching package |
The log says Could not open ALC device |
The library may have loaded, but Windows audio initialization failed | Repair the playback device or driver |
| The file exists but the application still reports it missing | The path, architecture, dependency, or file contents may be wrong | Follow the path and dependency checks below |
| The message says the file is not designed to run on Windows | The binary may be corrupt, incompatible, or the wrong architecture | Restore the official application package |
| The file appeared in a temporary download or unrelated system folder | Its provenance is questionable | Scan the system and reinstall from the legitimate application source |
Fix 1: Identify the application and exact path
Before replacing anything, find out which program is requesting the file. The program named in the error determines the correct repair.
Read the complete dialog carefully. Look for:
- The executable name
- The folder containing the executable
- The path Windows says it searched
- Whether the message says the file is missing, damaged, or unable to initialize
- Whether a launcher log names a
nativesdirectory - Whether the failure occurs before the game window opens or after audio initialization starts
For a Java game, inspect the launcher log rather than relying only on the Windows dialog. Legacy LWJGL messages may look like:
Failed to load ...\OpenAL64.dll: Could not load OpenAL library (126)
or:
Could not open ALC device
These mean different things. Error 126 can indicate that the requested library or one of its dependencies could not be loaded. Could not open ALC device generally means the OpenAL library was reached but could not open an available Windows playback device.
If you need to search common application data locations, open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem "$env:APPDATA" -Filter OpenAL64.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
This may take time if the profile contains many files. It is useful for older Java launchers that extract native libraries below %APPDATA%.
Do not assume the first matching file is the right one. A file under an old game version, temporary folder, or unrelated application may not satisfy the program that is failing.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the game in its launcher
For a game, launcher verification is normally the most reliable repair because it restores the native library that belongs to that exact game build.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
Steam may replace missing or damaged files without changing your saved games. If the file is removed again after verification, continue to the antivirus section instead of repeatedly verifying the same installation.
Epic Games Launcher
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select the three dots beside the game.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Launch the game again.
If the game uses a separate publisher launcher, use that launcher’s repair or verify function as well. The launcher that installed the game is usually the authority for its native files.
A legacy Java launcher
The exact labels differ between launchers, but the repair sequence is usually:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected game version or instance.
- Open its settings or installation manager.
- Choose Repair, Reinstall, Re-download, or an equivalent option.
- Allow the launcher to download the version’s native libraries again.
- Start the same version and check whether the
OpenAL64.dllerror is gone.
Older Minecraft installations may extract native files into a generated directory resembling:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\versions\<version>\<version>-natives-<id>\
Older layouts may instead use:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives\
Do not replace a launcher-managed native JAR with a DLL downloaded from somewhere else. Repair the affected version or instance so the launcher extracts the matching native set.
If verification reports no problem
A successful verification does not always prove that the application can use the file. The launcher may have restored the file to a different location, or antivirus may remove it immediately afterward.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a native game file during an update or extraction. This is especially important when the game worked previously and the error began immediately after an update, reinstall, or launcher change.
To inspect Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry matching
OpenAL64.dll, the game’s executable, or a native-library archive. - Expand the detection and inspect its original path and source.

- It came from a legitimate game installation.
- The original path belongs to the affected game.
- The game was installed through its official launcher, store, or publisher.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive or known application package.
- You have checked the package’s provenance.
If the file came from a random download, crack, unofficial repack, or temporary folder, do not restore it. Remove the questionable source and reinstall the game from its legitimate launcher.
A safer recovery sequence is often:
- Leave the suspicious isolated file quarantined.
- Uninstall or remove only the affected game installation if necessary.
- Restart Windows.
- Install or verify the game through its official launcher.
- Check whether the newly restored file remains present.
If the legitimate replacement is quarantined again, update Microsoft Defender, submit the original application package to the security vendor for review, and check the game’s support documentation before adding an exclusion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not exclude your entire C:\ drive or the entire Windows directory. If an exclusion is genuinely required for a trusted game, limit it to that game’s installation directory and remove it if the publisher provides a better fix.
Fix 4: Confirm the correct architecture
A 64-bit Windows system can run both 64-bit and 32-bit applications. The application’s process determines which native library it needs.
Common architecture mistakes include:
- Supplying
OpenAL32.dllto an application that specifically requestsOpenAL64.dll - Supplying a modern
OpenAL.dllto an older LWJGL 2 application - Using a 32-bit OpenAL Soft binary with a 64-bit process
- Using a 64-bit library with a 32-bit process
- Renaming a DLL without confirming that its exported functions and ABI match the application
Check the application’s architecture when possible:
- Start the application or launcher.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details.
- Find the game’s executable.
- Right-click the column headings and choose Select columns if architecture is not visible.
- Enable Platform where available.
- Check whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Some Windows versions label a 32-bit process with (32 bit). A launcher may be 32-bit while starting a separate 64-bit game process, so check the executable that actually fails.

Fix 5: Repair the application installation
If verification does not restore the file, perform a clean repair of the affected program.
First, close:
- The game
- Its launcher
- Java processes associated with the game
- Mod managers
- Overlay software
- File synchronization tools that may lock the installation
Then:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application if it provides a Repair or Modify option.
- Run the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
For a game without a repair option:
- Back up saves and configuration files that are stored outside cloud synchronization.
- Uninstall the game through its launcher or Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it to a location with sufficient free space.
- Launch it once before adding mods or custom native files.
- Confirm whether the clean installation starts.
- Add modifications back one at a time.
If the clean installation works, a mod, custom launcher, old native file, or security product was likely interfering with the original installation.
Check bundled redistributables
Some games include a _CommonRedist, Redist, or similarly named folder. It may contain application-specific prerequisites such as Microsoft Visual C++ packages or legacy components.
Only install a redistributable when:
- The game documentation calls for it.
- The folder belongs to the affected game.
- The error identifies that runtime or a related dependency.
- The package architecture matches the application.
A Visual C++ repair is relevant when the log names a dependency such as:
VCRUNTIME*.dll
MSVCP*.dll
Use Microsoft’s supported Visual C++ Redistributable packages for that repair. Installing every available runtime package without an identified dependency makes diagnosis harder and does not directly restore an application-private OpenAL64.dll.
Fix 6: Run the game with the expected permissions
A failed extraction can result from a permissions problem, a protected installation directory, or security software blocking the launcher.
First try the normal launcher repair. If it cannot write the native files:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Close the launcher.
- Right-click the launcher shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily.
- Select Apply and OK.
- Start the launcher and repair the game.
- Test the game.
- Remove the administrator setting if it was not needed.
Do not permanently run every game as administrator as a substitute for fixing its installation permissions. A launcher should normally be able to write to its own application data and installation directories without elevated privileges.
Also check:
- The drive is connected and available.
- The game folder is not read-only.
- The drive has free space.
- The installation is not inside a disconnected network location.
- A cloud-sync service is not reverting or locking native files.
- The launcher is not pointing to an old drive or moved installation.
Fix 7: Separate a missing DLL from an audio-device failure
Not every OpenAL error means OpenAL64.dll is absent.
If the log says:
Could not open ALC device
or shows an audio-device initialization failure, focus on Windows sound configuration.

Select the correct output device
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select Sound.
- Under Output, choose the speakers, headset, or monitor that should play the game.
- Set it as the default output if Windows offers that option.
- Start the game again.
Disconnect unused USB headsets, virtual audio devices, capture devices, and Bluetooth devices temporarily. Some older OpenAL applications do not handle a disconnected or unusual default device well.
Disable audio enhancements temporarily
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Sound.
- Select the active output device.
- Open its properties.
- Turn off audio enhancements or spatial-audio effects temporarily.
- Test the game.
If the game starts after this change, update the audio driver or leave only the necessary enhancement enabled.
Restart Windows audio services
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Windows Audio.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Find Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
- Restart it if available.
- Test the game again.
If the services cannot start, or other Windows applications also have no sound, this is a Windows audio problem rather than an openal64.dll replacement problem.
Fix 8: Update or reinstall the audio driver
A driver change can cause a previously working OpenAL application to fail during device initialization.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install relevant updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game.
Use Device Manager
- Press
Win+X. - Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the active audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the game.
If the failure began immediately after a driver update:

- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable:
- Open the device’s Properties.
- Select Uninstall Device.
- Confirm the removal without selecting options that delete unrelated driver packages.
- Restart Windows.
- Let Windows reinstall the device, or install the driver package from the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s official support page.
Outbyte Driver Updater can be useful when manually hunting through hardware pages and comparing several driver versions is slowing the diagnosis; its free scan shows which drivers are stale, while driver installation is completed by the full version. For an application-specific openal64.dll problem, repairing or reinstalling the game remains the definitive fix.
Fix 9: Check for a missing dependency
Windows may report that a requested DLL is missing even when the named file exists, because a dependency loaded by that DLL cannot be found.
This is more likely when:
OpenAL64.dllis visibly present.- The error says “The specified module could not be found.”
- The application reports an error code during loading.
- The file is the correct architecture but still fails.
- The failure began after moving the game to another computer.
Do not guess by installing every runtime package. Instead:
- Read the game’s complete log.
- Look for another missing filename.
- Check the game’s
_CommonRedistorRedistfolder. - Run the official repair or verification process.
- Install Microsoft Visual C++ only when the missing dependency is explicitly a Visual C++ runtime.
- Restart Windows and test again.
The Windows DLL loader follows defined search rules, including the application directory and other configured locations. An application can also use a private or absolute path. Keeping a private game DLL beside the application is normally safer than placing it in a shared system directory.

OpenAL64.dll is normally an application-private file. Microsoft system repair tools do not usually restore it.
Use them when several unrelated Windows components are failing, Windows Update is damaged, or the error involves protected Windows files.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Leave the window open if it reports that repair is still in progress.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows afterward and test the game.
Possible outcomes include:
- Windows found no integrity violations.
- Windows found damaged files and repaired them.
- Windows found damaged files but could not repair all of them.
If SFC cannot repair files, run DISM again after checking Windows Update, restart, and run SFC again. These commands may repair Windows infrastructure, but they should not be expected to recreate a missing game-native OpenAL64.dll.

Fix 11: Check Windows Features only for a separate legacy-component error
No Windows Feature normally installs or repairs an application’s private OpenAL64.dll.
If the same game also reports a separate missing legacy Windows component, inspect Optional Features:
- Press
Win+R. - Enter:
optionalfeatures.exe
- Press Enter.
- Review the available feature list.
- Enable only the feature named by the application’s documentation or error.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows if requested.
For example, an old game may separately require a legacy component such as DirectPlay. Enabling that component may address its own error, but it does not replace OpenAL64.dll.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not enable random Windows Features as a general DLL repair method. DirectX legacy components and OpenAL are different technologies, and Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime is not a universal repair for this filename.
Fix 12: Consider System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the game worked until a recent driver, launcher, or system change and a suitable restore point exists.

System Restore can revert system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs while preserving personal files. It cannot reliably replace a game file that was never included in the restore point, so use the game’s repair process afterward if the DLL is still absent.
Advanced workaround: OpenAL Soft
OpenAL Soft uses soft_oal.dll and provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds. Some application-specific compatibility cases can work when a correctly matched OpenAL Soft library is renamed to the filename the application expects.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treat this as an advanced workaround, not a standard repair.
Use it only when:
- The application’s documentation or support channel specifically permits it.
- You have confirmed the process architecture.
- The OpenAL Soft build matches that architecture.
- You preserve the original file first.
- The application is known to accept the compatible ABI.
- You can restore the original installation if audio behavior changes.
Do not rename an arbitrary soft_oal.dll to OpenAL64.dll and assume the result is safe. A renamed file can load but still fail later because of incompatible exports, device behavior, or application expectations.
For an older game, the bundled native library remains the preferred choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If reinstalling does not restore openal64.dll
When a clean reinstall produces the same error, work through these checks in order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConfirm that you repaired the right installation
A launcher may have multiple copies of the game:
- A current installation
- An old drive
- A beta branch
- A modded instance
- A second Windows user profile
- A separate Java version directory
Compare the executable path in the error with the path you verified or reinstalled.
Check whether the file disappears
Use PowerShell:
Get-ChildItem "$env:APPDATA" -Filter OpenAL64.dll -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
You can also search the game’s own installation directory from File Explorer.
If the file appears after repair and disappears later, inspect Microsoft Defender Protection history and any third-party endpoint security logs. This strongly suggests quarantine, cleanup, or another process removing it.
Check write permissions and disk space
- Right-click the game’s installation drive in File Explorer.
- Select Properties.
- Check available free space.
- Confirm that the drive is online and writable.
- Check that the launcher can create a test file in its own installation directory.
- Remove only confirmed temporary files if the drive is full.
Do not delete native files manually while diagnosing unless the launcher documentation specifically instructs you to remove a cache or generated directory.
Inspect the launcher log
Look for:
- Failed downloads
- Failed archive extraction
- Access denied
- Path not found
- Disk-full errors
- Hash or validation failures
- A different native directory than the one you expected
- A different architecture or Java runtime
A launcher that repeatedly restores the same damaged cache may need its cache or affected instance rebuilt through its own settings.
Check for a dependency failure
If the file exists, the process architecture matches, and the path is correct, a dependency or incompatible binary may be the cause. Follow the game’s official prerequisites and inspect the complete error rather than renaming more files.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Random DLL download websites may provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong architecture
- An incompatible build
- A file with a misleading name
- A file that fails because another dependency is missing
They also bypass the game’s launcher, which may expect a particular native package and directory.
Use these sources instead:
- The affected game’s official launcher
- The publisher’s official installer or repair function
- The game’s bundled
_CommonRedistorRedistpackage - The official OpenAL distribution only when the application’s documentation calls for it
- Microsoft packages when the error specifically identifies a Microsoft dependency
Do not copy the file into System32
C:\Windows\System32 is not a general-purpose storage location for game DLLs. A 64-bit system can also contain 32-bit components under C:\Windows\SysWOW64, so copying files between these folders can create additional confusion.
Microsoft’s application-local deployment guidance favors keeping private application DLLs with the application. A game should normally load its own native library from its installation directory or documented natives directory.
Do not rename unrelated libraries
These names have different roles:
OpenAL64.dll: legacy LWJGL naming for a 64-bit processOpenAL32.dll: traditional 32-bit OpenAL namingOpenAL.dll: used by some newer libraries and packagessoft_oal.dll: OpenAL Soft implementation
Changing a filename does not change its architecture or compatibility.
Do not use regsvr32 for OpenAL64.dll
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A normal OpenAL runtime library is not a COM registration DLL.

Do not install DirectX or every Visual C++ package blindly
DirectX, Visual C++, OpenAL, and Windows audio drivers are separate components.
Install or repair them only when:
- The game documentation requires them.
- The error names a specific dependency.
- The game’s bundled prerequisite installer identifies the component.
- The architecture matches the affected application.
A DirectX repair will not normally restore an application-private OpenAL64.dll.
Do not assume every error means the file is absent
The file may be present but:
- The application is searching another directory.
- The file is the wrong architecture.
- A dependency is missing.
- The file is corrupt.
- The audio device is unavailable.
- A driver update changed device initialization.
- The launcher extracted an incompatible native set.
Read the log before selecting the fix.
Frequently asked questions
Is openal64.dll part of Windows?
No. It is normally supplied by the game, Java runtime bundle, launcher, or another application using OpenAL. It should not be treated like a protected Windows system DLL.
Is openal64.dll the same as OpenAL32.dll?
No. Legacy LWJGL 2 uses OpenAL64.dll for a 64-bit process and OpenAL32.dll for a 32-bit process. They are not interchangeable simply because both contain “OpenAL” in the name.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIs OpenAL64.dll the same as OpenAL.dll?
Not necessarily. OpenAL.dll is used by newer library packages, including modern LWJGL distributions. An older application may specifically require the legacy OpenAL64.dll name and package.
Is OpenAL64.dll the same as soft_oal.dll?
No. soft_oal.dll is an OpenAL Soft implementation. It can sometimes serve as an application-specific compatibility workaround when the architecture and ABI match, but renaming it is not a universal repair.
Does 64-bit Windows require OpenAL64.dll?
No. The application’s process architecture determines the required library. A 32-bit game can run on 64-bit Windows and still request OpenAL32.dll.
Where should the file be located?
That depends on the application. It may be beside the game executable, in a launcher-created natives directory, or in another application-specific folder. Follow the path in the application’s log and let the launcher restore the file.
Why does OpenAL32.dll exist when OpenAL64.dll is missing?
The application may have received the traditional 32-bit runtime while the failing process expects the legacy 64-bit name. Confirm the process architecture and repair the application’s native package rather than renaming the existing file.
Will reinstalling DirectX fix openal64.dll?
Usually not. DirectX is separate from OpenAL, and this filename is normally an application-private game library. Use DirectX only when the game reports a separate DirectX dependency error.
Should I run SFC and DISM?
Run them when Windows itself has broader corruption or multiple unrelated system failures. They do not normally restore a missing game-private OpenAL64.dll; verify or reinstall the game first.
Why does the error remain after reinstalling?
The launcher may be reinstalling a damaged cache, antivirus may be quarantining the new file, the error may refer to another installation, or the library may load but fail because of a missing dependency or unavailable audio device.
What if the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows?
That usually points to a corrupt binary, wrong architecture, incompatible build, or bad dependency. Restore the official application package and confirm the process architecture. Do not assume the message identifies one specific OpenAL version.
Is regsvr32 required?
No. OpenAL runtime libraries are not normally registered with regsvr32. Use the game launcher or official installer.
What is the safest final repair?
Identify the exact program and path, verify or repair that program, inspect antivirus quarantine, confirm the application’s architecture, and then address any separate audio-device or dependency error. Keep third-party DLLs in the application’s own directory and avoid arbitrary downloads or System32 copying.
