Choose a small Linux VPS for most first-time or always-on OpenClaw deployments. It stays online when a laptop is closed, avoids dependence on home power and Wi-Fi, and is reachable from anywhere. Choose a dedicated Mac mini when OpenClaw must work with files on your Mac, a visible browser window, residential networking, or macOS-only tools. If you need both, run the Gateway on a VPS and pair the Mac mini as a node.
What OpenClaw can run on
OpenClaw does not require Apple hardware. Its Gateway runs on macOS or Linux, and Windows users can run it through WSL2. The host can be a Mac mini, another Mac, a Linux VPS, a home server, or a Raspberry Pi-class computer. Your choice is therefore about capabilities and operating conditions rather than a hard platform requirement.

The Gateway is the central process that connects OpenClaw to messaging channels and tools. A local Mac and a remote VPS can both host it. You can also keep the Gateway in one place and pair another computer as a node for capabilities that only exist on that device.
Mac mini or VPS: the decision at a glance
| Your priority | Better default | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 24/7 uptime and remote access | Linux VPS | A hosted server is intended to remain online and does not depend on a laptop sleeping, home electricity, or a local network. |
| Direct access to local files | Mac mini | The Gateway and tools run beside the files instead of reaching them through a remote connection. |
| A visible browser window | Mac mini | Local macOS automation can display and interact with a normal browser window; a VPS normally runs a headless browser. |
| macOS-only tools | Mac mini or hybrid | The Mac is needed for those tools, but the Gateway itself can remain on a VPS. |
| Lowest upfront commitment | VPS | You rent capacity monthly rather than buying a computer. |
| Residential IP for browser automation | Mac mini | OpenClaw’s macOS guidance notes that some sites block data-center IP ranges. |
| Cloud reliability plus local hardware | Hybrid | The VPS handles the Gateway while the Mac supplies screen, browser, camera, files, or system functions. |
When a Mac mini is the right host
Local files and applications
A Mac mini gives OpenClaw direct access to the folders, applications, and peripherals attached to that Mac, subject to the permissions you grant. This is useful when an automation must read a local game-capture folder, manipulate files on an attached drive, use a desktop application, or coordinate with other macOS software. A VPS can reach local data only after you build a secure transfer, mount, or node connection.

Visible browser automation
The central practical difference in the official FAQ is a headless browser on a server versus a visible local window on a Mac. A visible window helps when you need to watch an automation, complete a flow that behaves differently in headless mode, or troubleshoot by seeing exactly what the browser is doing. It also avoids treating a remote desktop session as part of every run.
Residential networking
A Mac operating on your home connection presents a residential network path. OpenClaw’s macOS virtual-machine guidance recommends dedicated hardware such as a Mac mini when browser automation needs a residential IP, because some websites block traffic from data-center ranges. This is a property of the network connection, not a guarantee that every site will permit automation.

Dedicated hardware instead of a daily laptop
A Mac mini can be left running without competing with a personal laptop. That removes many interruptions caused by closing a lid, changing networks, rebooting for travel, or running a heavy application in the foreground. It does not remove every failure: home power outages, router failures, macOS updates, and local hardware faults can still stop the Gateway.
Mac-specific messaging and tools
A Mac is required somewhere for iMessage access, because the Mac must be signed in to Messages. The Mac does not have to host the Gateway; a Linux Gateway can invoke imsg through an SSH wrapper on the signed-in Mac. Other common channels do not impose that requirement.

Mac mini limitations to plan for
- Home-network dependence: remote access and inbound integrations can fail when the router, ISP, or power fails.
- Maintenance: you must handle macOS updates, account sessions, disk health, backups, and physical security.
- Headless operation is not automatic: a Mac can run without a monitor, but a workflow designed around a visible window may need a logged-in graphical session and appropriate display settings.
- Upfront hardware expense: the computer, storage, accessories, and electricity are paid by you rather than bundled into a monthly server bill.
- Remote administration: reaching the Mac safely from outside your home requires a secure remote-access design; exposing services directly to the internet is not a substitute for that design.
When a VPS is the right host
Always-on operation
A VPS is designed for persistent service operation. It avoids laptop sleep and reduces dependence on a residential network, which is why OpenClaw’s FAQ recommends a VPS when 24/7 reliability matters. You can restart or administer it remotely without being in the same building.
Remote access from anywhere
A VPS gives the Gateway a stable internet location for messaging channels and remote administration. This is useful if you travel, have more than one operator, or need automations to continue while your home computer is off. OpenClaw’s VPS guidance says the Gateway can run on any Linux server or cloud VPS; examples of deployment platforms include Azure, DigitalOcean, Fly.io, Google Cloud, Hetzner, Oracle Cloud, Railway, Render, and AWS.

WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Mattermost, and Discord work from a VPS. For those channels, the meaningful trade-off is generally headless browser operation versus a visible local browser window, not whether the Gateway is on Apple hardware.
VPS limitations
- Headless browser: browser work normally runs without a visible desktop window.
- Remote files: local Mac folders are not automatically available; use a node or an explicit, secured transfer method.
- SSH administration: installation, updates, logs, and recovery are typically performed over SSH or a provider console.
- Data-center networking: some websites restrict data-center IP ranges, which can make a VPS unsuitable for particular browser workflows.
- Resource ceilings: a small instance may run the Gateway but struggle when browser automation, media processing, logs, or several channels run at once.
VPS sizing: the published baseline and what changes it
OpenClaw’s FAQ lists an absolute minimum of 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and approximately 500 MB of disk. The same guidance recommends 1–2 vCPUs and at least 2 GB of RAM for headroom with logs, media, and multiple channels. Those figures are starting points, not a performance guarantee.

- Intel UHD Graphics 630
- 8GB 2666MHz DDR4
- Ultrafast SSD storage
- Four Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, one HDMI 2. 0 port, and two USB 3 ports
| Workload | Practical starting point from the guidance | Why you may need more |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway only, light use | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, about 500 MB disk (absolute minimum) | Leaves little room for logs, updates, or additional processes. |
| Several channels or routine media | 1–2 vCPUs, 2 GB RAM or more | Logs, media handling, and concurrent channel work consume headroom. |
| Browser automation and heavier media | More than the baseline; size after observing usage | Browsers and media tools can require substantially more CPU, memory, and disk than the Gateway alone. |
Start with the recommended 2 GB class when the monthly difference is acceptable, then watch memory pressure, CPU load, disk use, and restart frequency. Increase resources before the system begins swapping or dropping jobs. Keep logs and media retention under control so a small disk does not fill silently.
How to deploy OpenClaw on a VPS
- Select a Linux VPS: choose a current Linux image from a provider and a region that suits your users, integrations, and latency needs. Begin at the published minimum only for a very light Gateway; otherwise use at least 1–2 vCPUs and 2 GB RAM.
- Secure the account: use SSH keys where available, disable password-only administration, apply provider and operating-system security updates, and restrict management access to the networks or identities that need it.
- Install OpenClaw’s Gateway: follow the current Linux installation procedure for the release you are using. Keep the Gateway under a service manager or equivalent supervisor so it restarts after a reboot.
- Connect channels: authenticate WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Mattermost, Discord, or other supported integrations from the Gateway. Confirm each channel with a small test message before adding automation.
- Set up browser work deliberately: assume browser automation is headless. If a workflow needs a visible window or a residential IP, move that capability to a Mac node instead of forcing the VPS to imitate a desktop.
- Verify recovery: reboot the VPS, check that the Gateway returns, inspect logs, and test a channel after the restart. Record where configuration and credentials are stored and back up the parts you would need to rebuild.
- Monitor resources: watch RAM, CPU, disk, and log growth during your busiest expected workload. Resize before failures become user-visible.
How to deploy OpenClaw on a dedicated Mac mini
- Prepare a dedicated macOS account: keep the Mac mini on reliable power and a stable network, and avoid using the only administrator account for routine automation.
- Install OpenClaw for macOS: use the current macOS instructions for your OpenClaw release, then grant only the macOS permissions required by the tools you enable.
- Keep the Mac available: configure sleep and automatic-login behavior according to your security model. A workflow that needs a visible browser requires an active graphical session; a background-only Gateway has different requirements.
- Connect local resources carefully: give access only to the folders, applications, camera, or system controls that a workflow needs. Separate sensitive personal files from automation data when possible.
- Test browser and network assumptions: confirm that the browser window appears, the residential connection is the one you intend to use, and the target site accepts the workflow. A residential address does not override a site’s terms or anti-automation controls.
- Plan maintenance: schedule macOS updates, backups, and reboots. Test that the Gateway and any browser session return after each change instead of assuming a logged-out or updated Mac will behave identically.
The hybrid design: VPS Gateway plus Mac node
Hybrid deployment is the most flexible choice when you need cloud uptime and local capabilities. Keep the Gateway on the VPS so messaging and scheduled work continue if the house loses power. Pair the Mac mini as a node for local files, a visible browser, camera or screen access, macOS tools, and iMessage-related functions.

- Gateway process and channel connections that do not depend on macOS.
- Schedules, webhooks, and other work that must run while the Mac is offline.
- Central logs and operational monitoring, subject to your retention and privacy policy.
What belongs on the Mac node
- Actions requiring a visible browser window or local graphical session.
- Access to Mac-only files, applications, camera, screen, and system capabilities.
- iMessage access through the Mac signed in to Messages.
Operational trade-offs
The hybrid arrangement adds a dependency: the VPS may be healthy while the Mac node is disconnected. Design workflows to detect that state, queue work where possible, and report a clear failure rather than repeatedly retrying an unavailable local action. Secure the connection between Gateway and node, keep both systems updated, and document which jobs require the Mac.
iMessage when the Gateway runs on Linux
You do not need a Mac mini running the Gateway to use iMessage. You do need access to a Mac that is signed in to Messages. OpenClaw documents a Linux-or-other-host arrangement in which the Gateway calls imsg through an SSH wrapper on that Mac. The Mac can therefore be a separate node or helper machine while the VPS handles the always-on portion.

This distinction matters when choosing hardware: buying a Mac mini solely to host the Gateway is unnecessary if your only Apple-specific requirement is iMessage and you already have an available, signed-in Mac. If no such Mac exists, the Mac requirement remains even though the Gateway can stay in Linux.
Cost: compare the ownership model, not a mythical break-even point
Official OpenClaw guidance does not publish a stable Mac-mini-versus-VPS break-even figure, so a universal total-cost claim would be misleading. A Mac mini combines an upfront hardware purchase with electricity, storage, accessories, maintenance, and the value of your time. A VPS converts the server into recurring hosting charges.
Your actual total also depends on the selected Mac configuration, VPS size and region, storage and bandwidth, backups, and model or API usage. A tiny VPS can be inexpensive but may need an upgrade for browsers or media; a larger instance raises the monthly bill. A Mac that you already own has a different marginal cost from a new dedicated purchase. Write down the workload, retention period, uptime target, and whether a residential IP is essential before comparing quotes.
| Cost factor | Mac mini | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Computer acquisition | Upfront hardware purchase, unless you already have suitable hardware | No hardware purchase; capacity is rented |
| Power and connectivity | Your electricity and home internet | Included in the provider’s service model, subject to its terms |
| Scaling | Usually requires replacing or adding hardware | Often changeable by resizing the instance |
| Local capability | Native access to Mac files, windows, and peripherals | Requires a node or remote-access design |
| Data-center restrictions | Usually uses a residential connection | May encounter sites that block data-center IP ranges |
A practical choice process
- List non-negotiable capabilities. Mark local files, visible browser automation, residential networking, macOS-only tools, and iMessage. Any marked item points to a Mac node.
- Set the uptime requirement. If jobs must continue while nobody is home or while the Mac is off, place the Gateway on a VPS.
- Choose the smallest safe VPS. Use 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, and about 500 MB disk only for a genuinely light workload. Use at least 2 GB RAM when logs, media, or multiple channels are involved.
- Decide whether a node solves the exception. If only browser visibility, local files, or Apple tools require macOS, keep the reliable core on the VPS and add the Mac as a node.
- Test the failure you care about. Turn off the Mac and verify that VPS-only jobs continue; then disconnect the VPS and verify that you know how to restore the Gateway.
Troubleshooting common deployment problems
The Gateway stops when the laptop closes
That is the expected failure mode of a laptop-based local installation. Move the Gateway to a dedicated Mac configured to remain available or to a VPS. A Mac mini reduces interruptions from daily laptop use but still depends on home power and networking.

A browser workflow fails only on the VPS
Check whether the workflow requires a visible window or rejects data-center IP ranges. If either condition applies, run that action on the Mac node and leave channel handling on the VPS.
The VPS runs out of memory
Inspect memory use during browser and media jobs, trim unnecessary retention, and resize above the 2 GB recommendation when the workload warrants it. The 1 GB figure is an absolute minimum, not a promise that every tool will fit.
iMessage does not send from Linux
Confirm that a reachable Mac is signed in to Messages and that the SSH wrapper can invoke imsg. The Linux Gateway alone cannot replace the signed-in Mac requirement.
The Mac node disappears while the VPS is healthy
Treat the node as an optional capability in workflow design. Add an availability check, queue or fail clearly when the Mac is offline, and keep VPS-only notifications running so you can repair the local machine.
Bottom line
For most people starting OpenClaw, a small Linux VPS is the practical default: it is built for continuous operation, remote access, and messaging without a Mac. Select a Mac mini when local files, a visible browser, a residential connection, or macOS-specific tools are central to the job. When both sets of requirements matter, use the VPS as the Gateway and the Mac mini as a node; that separates reliable cloud operation from local-only capabilities instead of forcing one machine to compromise on both.
