OpenSSL gives you a complete command-line workflow for creating private keys, generating PKCS#10 certificate signing requests (CSRs), producing test certificates, inspecting X.509 fields, and packaging certificates for different servers. The reliable sequence is: create or select a private key, build a CSR, submit it to a certificate authority (CA) or self-sign it for a controlled test, inspect the resulting certificate, verify its dates, names, extensions and chain, then deploy and protect the key.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
A certificate file can be perfectly readable to OpenSSL and still fail in a browser or game-service client. Parsing shows what the file contains; trust and hostname validation additionally depend on the issuing chain, trusted roots, certificate purpose and matching Subject Alternative Name (SAN) entries.

What OpenSSL handles
The OpenSSL project describes itself as “a cryptography toolkit implementing the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) network protocols and related cryptography standards required for them.” In certificate work, its core objects are private keys, public keys, PKCS#10 CSRs, X.509 certificates and certificate-revocation lists.
A CSR is not a certificate. It is a signed request containing a public key and identifying information. A CA validates your control of the requested identity and places the approved information into a certificate. A self-signed certificate skips that external signature and is useful for a lab, an internal test domain or a root-CA experiment, but it is not automatically trusted by public clients.

The practical lifecycle
- Generate a private key or select an existing one.
- Create a CSR that carries the public key and requested subject/SAN data.
- Send the CSR to a CA, or self-sign it for a controlled test.
- Inspect the certificate’s subject, issuer, validity, serial number, extensions, key usage and public key.
- Verify the chain and hostname with the trust material used by the target client.
- Convert the certificate and key into the packaging format required by the server, then protect the private key and schedule renewal.
Check your OpenSSL release before relying on defaults
Run this first and record the output with your deployment notes:
openssl version -a
Command behavior differs between 1.1.1, 3.x and later releases. In OpenSSL 3.2 and newer, certificates generated by req are X.509 version 3 by default unless you explicitly request -x509v1; key-identifier extensions are also included by default. Since OpenSSL 3.3, a failed req -verify check exits with status 1, which matters in scripts and CI jobs.

The older -nodes option is deprecated in OpenSSL 3.0. An unencrypted key can be necessary for unattended service startup, but it must then be protected by filesystem permissions and the host’s secret-management controls.
Generate a private key and CSR
One interactive command
To generate a 2048-bit RSA key and a CSR in one workflow:
openssl req -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout private.key -out request.csr
OpenSSL prompts for the distinguished-name fields. The private key is written to private.key; the CSR is written to request.csr. Unless you choose an option that disables encryption, OpenSSL may ask for a passphrase for the generated key. Keep that passphrase separate from the CSR: a CA never needs your private key or its passphrase.

Create a CSR from an existing key
If a key already exists, create a new request without generating another key:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesopenssl req -new -key private.key -out request.csr
This is useful when renewing a certificate while retaining a key, although many teams deliberately generate a replacement key during renewal. Whichever policy you use, record the exact command and OpenSSL version so a later renewal is reproducible.
Use a configuration file for repeatable SANs
Modern hostname validation should use explicit Subject Alternative Name entries. Do not assume that a Common Name alone will satisfy every client. A configuration-driven request makes the names visible and repeatable:
[req]
distinguished_name = dn
req_extensions = req_ext
prompt = no
[dn]
CN = example.test
[req_ext]
subjectAltName = @alt_names
[alt_names]
DNS.1 = example.test
DNS.2 = api.example.test
Save it as request.cnf, then run:
openssl req -new -key private.key -out request.csr -config request.cnf
The CA may apply its own policy when issuing the certificate, so inspect the issued certificate rather than assuming every requested extension was copied unchanged.
Inspect and verify a CSR before submission
Use the request parser to display the encoded fields and verify the CSR’s internal signature:

openssl req -in request.csr -text -verify -noout
Check that the public-key algorithm and size are what you intended, that the subject is correct, and that every SAN is present in the request. A successful local signature check proves the CSR is internally consistent; it does not prove that a CA will issue the name or that a future certificate will chain to a trusted root.
Create a self-signed certificate for testing
For a controlled test environment, you can create a key and a self-signed certificate directly:
openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -keyout key.pem -out cert.pem
The resulting certificate is signed by its own key. That is appropriate for a lab, a private trust domain where you distribute your own root, or a temporary integration test. Public HTTPS normally requires a certificate chaining to a CA trusted by the client; replacing a CA-issued certificate with a self-signed one will usually produce an untrusted-certificate error.
When you need an explicit lifetime or SAN policy, use a configuration file and the options supported by your installed release. Always inspect the generated certificate afterward instead of relying on defaults.

Check identity and dates at a glance
openssl x509 -in cert.pem -dates -issuer -subject -noout
Compare the notBefore and notAfter values with the current time on the client and server. Confirm that the issuer is the expected CA and that the subject corresponds to the service.
Check whether expiration is approaching
openssl x509 -in cert.pem -checkend 2592000 -noout
The argument is a number of seconds; 2592000 represents 30 days. The command’s exit status lets a script fail or alert when the certificate will expire within that interval. Treat this as an expiry check, not a complete TLS-validation test.
Review intended purposes
openssl x509 -in cert.pem -purpose -noout
This reports the purposes OpenSSL derives from the certificate’s extensions. A certificate can be within its date range and still be unsuitable for server authentication because its key usage, extended key usage or basic constraints do not permit the required role.
Parsing is different from trust and hostname validation
openssl x509 -text only parses the certificate. It does not establish that the issuer is trusted, that every intermediate is available, or that the requested hostname matches a SAN.
Full validation uses the trust store and chain presented to the client. A typical failure pattern is an otherwise well-formed leaf certificate with a missing intermediate, an untrusted root, an expired certificate in the chain, or a hostname absent from the SAN list. Validate with the same root and intermediate material, client purpose and hostname rules that the production service uses. An inspection command cannot substitute for that end-to-end test.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
What to compare when validation fails
- Validity: The current time must fall between
notBeforeandnotAfter; check the clocks on all participating systems. - Hostname: The requested DNS name must appear in an appropriate SAN entry. A matching Common Name alone is not a safe assumption for modern clients.
- Issuer and chain: The client must trust the root and receive or otherwise have access to required intermediate certificates.
- Purpose and usage: Key usage, extended key usage and basic constraints must allow the certificate’s role.
- Key pairing: The deployed private key must correspond to the public key in the certificate; a CSR made from a different key will not produce a usable pairing.
Convert common certificate formats
PEM is a text encoding with boundary lines such as -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----. DER is the binary encoding of the same ASN.1 structures. PKCS#12 (often saved as .p12 or .pfx) is a password-protected container that can hold a private key, certificate and chain. PKCS#7 (often .p7b) carries certificates and a chain but normally does not contain a private key.
PEM to DER certificate
openssl x509 -in cert.pem -outform der -out cert.der
DER to PEM certificate
openssl x509 -inform der -in cert.der -outform pem -out cert.pem
Create a PKCS#12 bundle
openssl pkcs12 -export -out bundle.p12 -inkey private.key -in cert.pem -certfile intermediate.pem
OpenSSL prompts for an export password. Include the intermediate file only when you have the correct chain certificate for the issued leaf. A PKCS#12 bundle is not a replacement for secure key handling: anyone who obtains the bundle and its password may obtain the private key.
Read certificates from a PKCS#7 file
openssl pkcs7 -print_certs -in chain.p7b -out chain.pem
PKCS#7 files may be PEM or DER encoded. If parsing fails, identify the input encoding and use the corresponding format option supported by your OpenSSL release. Because PKCS#7 generally contains certificates rather than private keys, you still need the matching key separately.
Protect keys and make deployment reproducible
- Keep private keys out of tickets, chat, source-control repositories and ordinary email. A CA needs the CSR, never the private key.
- Restrict key-file permissions to the service account or administrator that must read them.
- Document whether the deployed key is encrypted. An encrypted key improves protection at rest but requires a secure way to provide its passphrase during service startup.
- Record the OpenSSL version, configuration file, key algorithm, SAN list and command options used for every issuance.
- Before deployment, inspect the leaf certificate and every supplied intermediate; then perform a trust-and-hostname check using the target client’s trust store.
- Set an alert window well before
notAfter, generate or request a replacement certificate, test the new chain, and only then remove the old material.
RSA, elliptic-curve, encryption and trust choices
| Decision | Option 1 | Option 2 | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| Key type | RSA, such as the 2048-bit examples above | Elliptic-curve key | Choose an algorithm supported by every server, client and CA in the path; do not change algorithms without checking interoperability. |
| Private-key storage | Encrypted key | Unencrypted key created with -noenc |
Encryption protects the file at rest but needs passphrase handling; an unencrypted key demands stronger filesystem and host controls. |
| Certificate source | Self-signed | CA-issued | Self-signed suits controlled testing or a private trust domain; public HTTPS generally needs a chain to a trusted CA. |
| Packaging | PEM or DER | PKCS#12 or PKCS#7 | Use the format required by the target software; PKCS#12 can carry a private key, while PKCS#7 normally carries certificates only. |
| CSR creation | Interactive prompts | Configuration-driven | Interactive mode is quick; a configuration file makes SANs and renewals auditable and repeatable. |
| Checking | Local parsing | Chain and hostname verification | Parsing reveals encoded values; trust validation also needs the correct roots, intermediates, purpose and hostname. |
A pre-deployment checklist
- Run
openssl version -aand save the version information. - Confirm the private key is present, protected and paired with the intended CSR.
- Inspect the CSR with
openssl req -in request.csr -text -verify -noout. - After issuance, inspect the certificate with
openssl x509 -in cert.pem -text -noout. - Check dates, issuer, SANs, key usage, extended key usage and fingerprints.
- Verify the complete chain and hostname using the target client’s trust material.
- Convert to PEM, DER, PKCS#12 or PKCS#7 only as required, preserving the private key securely.
- Test the deployment, set renewal alerts and retain the exact command/configuration record.
The Bottom Line
Use OpenSSL to generate and inspect the key and CSR, but judge a certificate as deployable only after its dates, SANs, purposes, complete chain and hostname validation succeed with the trust material used by the real client.
