Short answer: For a new, small VPN on a Linux VPS, choose WireGuard unless you specifically need OpenVPN’s TCP transport, proxy or NAT traversal, Ethernet bridging, certificate-heavy administration, or older-client compatibility. WireGuard keeps the tunnel and cryptographic design small; OpenVPN gives you a broader set of transports and integration options.
That is a protocol decision, not a promise that one tunnel will always be faster. VPS CPU allocation, kernel support, MTU, client software, encryption settings, network congestion and the provider’s bandwidth ceiling can change the result. The sections below show where each protocol fits and how to make the choice defensibly.

For one person or a small household using a Linux VPS, the table usually points to WireGuard. A company with legacy clients, bridge requirements or restrictive networks may rationally choose OpenVPN instead.
What WireGuard actually provides
A compact peer model
WireGuard associates each peer’s public key with an AllowedIPs list. That list has two jobs: it tells the system where to route outgoing traffic and acts as an access-control check for incoming traffic. Adding a peer therefore means defining its key, the addresses it may use and the traffic it is allowed to claim.

The design avoids a large menu of protocol modes. WireGuard securely encapsulates IP packets over UDP and uses a fixed modern cryptographic construction rather than asking an administrator to negotiate among many cipher combinations. Its project describes the goal as being faster, simpler and leaner than IPsec, and considerably more performant than OpenVPN; those are design goals, not a guarantee for every VPS.
Roaming and endpoint learning
After an authenticated packet arrives, a server can learn the client’s latest endpoint. A phone can move from home Wi-Fi to cellular data, or a laptop can change networks, without requiring the administrator to edit the peer’s public key or permanently pin one address. The peer still needs working DNS, routing and firewall rules, but the tunnel protocol itself is designed for this movement.

Cryptographic properties
The protocol specification lists ChaCha20 for encryption, Poly1305 for authentication, Curve25519 for elliptic-curve Diffie–Hellman, BLAKE2s, SipHash24 and HKDF. Its handshake is specified to provide perfect forward secrecy, replay protection, identity hiding and authenticated key exchange. These properties answer the security question at the protocol level; they do not replace careful key storage, host hardening or access-policy review.
What OpenVPN adds
Transport flexibility
OpenVPN can carry a tunnel over UDP or TCP and can work through proxies or NAT. That matters when a hotel, office, campus or public hotspot mishandles outbound UDP. TCP is not automatically faster—it can introduce head-of-line blocking when packets are lost—but it gives you a transport option that WireGuard does not have.
Routed and bridged networking
OpenVPN uses TUN/TAP virtual interfaces. TUN is suited to routed IP traffic; TAP can support Ethernet bridging. Bridging is useful when remote devices must appear on the same layer-2 network as the VPS-side LAN, although it adds operational complexity and is not necessary for a normal routed internet-access VPN.
TLS and certificate integration
OpenVPN integrates with OpenSSL and supports either a pre-shared static-key mode or a public-key SSL/TLS mode using client and server certificates. That lets an organization fit VPN access into an existing certificate authority, enrollment and revocation process. The flexibility also means more files, expiry dates, profile variants and failure modes to manage.

The OpenVPN 2.6 manual documents portability to most major operating systems, dynamic IP addresses and DHCP support, and deployments ranging from hundreds to thousands of users. WireGuard is also cross-platform across Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS and Android, but its core protocol deliberately leaves more of the multi-user administration layer to surrounding tools.

Is WireGuard secure enough for a self-hosted VPN?
Yes, when you treat it as a secure tunnel protocol rather than a complete access-management product. Its specified handshake and cryptographic suite provide modern confidentiality and authentication, while AllowedIPs lets you express which addresses each peer may send or claim. The security boundary still includes the VPS operating system, private-key files, firewall, DNS resolver, client devices and the process used to remove access.
Key handling you must supply
- Generate a unique key pair for every device or user instead of sharing one private key.
- Keep private keys out of shell history, tickets, public repositories and support screenshots.
- Record which person or device owns each public key so that a lost phone can be removed without affecting other peers.
- Define a rotation schedule appropriate to your risk. WireGuard does not provide a central certificate authority or a built-in user directory.
- When access ends, delete the peer and its AllowedIPs entry, then confirm that the old device can no longer establish traffic.
These tasks are management workflow, not missing cryptography. A small configuration can be an advantage, but it does not automatically create identity lifecycle controls.
Do you need OpenVPN for TCP or firewall bypass?
Choose OpenVPN when a required network path permits TCP but blocks or degrades UDP, or when your design depends on a proxy-aware connection. WireGuard sends all packets over UDP and has no TCP mode in the protocol. OpenVPN can listen on a TCP port or use UDP, giving you a fallback that can make the difference between a usable and unusable connection on a restrictive network.
Do not equate TCP fallback with defeating every firewall. A network can block the chosen port, inspect traffic, require authentication or prohibit VPN use by policy. OpenVPN’s transport options improve compatibility; they do not guarantee concealment or access where the network owner disallows it.
Which is faster on a self-hosted VPS?
There is no honest, universal throughput or latency multiplier for 2026. Results vary with the VPS’s assigned CPU time, Linux kernel and driver support, OpenVPN DCO availability, MTU, whether the tunnel uses UDP or TCP, client implementation, encryption settings, packet loss and the provider’s network limit.
Why WireGuard often looks efficient
WireGuard’s project attributes high performance to fast cryptographic primitives and Linux-kernel integration. Its small implementation surface can also simplify auditing and reduce configuration overhead. Those characteristics make it a sensible first test on a Linux VPS, especially for a single user or a few roaming devices.
Why old OpenVPN comparisons can mislead
OpenVPN 2.6 includes Data Channel Offload. DCO changes where data-channel processing occurs and can alter CPU use and throughput compared with older user-space-only setups. A comparison made with an older OpenVPN release, a different cipher, TCP transport or no DCO should not be presented as a current result for every installation.

A fair test plan
If speed determines the purchase or migration, test both protocols on the same VPS and under the same conditions:
- Use the same client device, VPS region and network path.
- Keep MTU values, route scope and split-tunnel or full-tunnel policy equivalent.
- Use comparable encryption strength and record whether OpenVPN DCO is enabled and supported.
- Run the same sustained download, upload and bidirectional workloads at several times of day.
- Record throughput, latency, packet loss, VPS CPU utilization and reconnect behavior.
- Repeat from more than one client network, including the restrictive network that motivated a TCP test if applicable.
This produces evidence for your hardware and users. It does not create a transferable claim that one protocol is always a fixed number of times faster.
Self-hosting workflow on a Linux VPS
The protocol packages and command names differ by distribution, so treat the following as a deployment sequence rather than copy-and-paste commands.
- Confirm VPS prerequisites. Check that you control the operating system, can manage its firewall, have the required kernel support and can receive the transport you plan to use. Verify IPv4 and IPv6 requirements, bandwidth policy and whether the provider filters UDP.
- Patch and minimize the host. Apply current operating-system updates, remove unnecessary services, restrict administrative login and enable a host firewall before exposing the VPN listener.
- Choose the address plan. Reserve a private tunnel subnet, decide whether clients receive full-tunnel or split-tunnel routes and document DNS servers. Avoid overlapping the tunnel range with common home or office LAN ranges.
- Select the identity model. For WireGuard, create a separate public/private key pair per peer and define AllowedIPs. For OpenVPN, decide between static-key operation and a TLS certificate hierarchy, then document certificate issuance, expiry and revocation.
- Configure forwarding and policy. Permit only the interfaces, ports and destinations required. If the VPS will provide internet egress, configure forwarding and source NAT deliberately; if it will reach one private network, limit routes to that network.
- Set DNS behavior. Decide whether clients use the VPS resolver, an internal resolver or their normal DNS. Test both name resolution and leak behavior from inside and outside the tunnel.
- Build one test client first. Connect a single laptop or phone, verify the assigned address, routes, DNS, IPv4 and IPv6 behavior, and access to the intended destinations before enrolling more peers.
- Document recovery. Keep an out-of-band VPS console or recovery path. A bad firewall rule, incorrect AllowedIPs entry, expired certificate or MTU setting can otherwise lock you out of the host.
Key management and administration differences
WireGuard operations
WireGuard’s simplicity shifts work to your surrounding process. You need a peer inventory, a way to deliver configurations securely, a revocation procedure, DNS and address allocation, and a policy for removing stale peers. For a handful of devices, a documented spreadsheet or small internal tool may be sufficient; larger groups should evaluate dedicated administration software before deployment.

AllowedIPs deserves particular attention. An overly broad entry can claim traffic that belongs to another peer; an overly narrow entry can make a valid device appear connected but unable to reach its intended networks. Review the list whenever a device changes role or receives a new tunnel address.
OpenVPN operations
OpenVPN profiles commonly involve a client configuration, certificates, private keys and a server-side policy. That adds lifecycle work but can align with established certificate authorities, directory integration and support procedures. Plan for certificate expiry, renewal, revocation and profile distribution before inviting users.
OpenVPN’s broader option set also increases the chance of configuration drift. Record the selected transport, tunnel interface type, cipher policy, authentication method, DNS behavior and route scope so that support staff can reproduce a client’s issue.

Compatibility, clients and restrictive environments
WireGuard has official cross-platform coverage for Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS and Android, in addition to Linux deployments. Its roaming behavior is particularly useful for mobile clients that change addresses. The trade-off is that the core project does not attempt to be a complete account, billing or certificate-management system.
OpenVPN’s portability and long history make it a safer choice when a device, embedded system or enterprise workflow already depends on OpenVPN profiles or TLS certificates. It is also the practical option when Ethernet bridging or a TCP transport is a hard requirement.

The client shows connected but has no internet access
- Check that the client route policy includes the destinations you intend to send through the tunnel.
- Verify VPS forwarding and source NAT rules.
- Test the tunnel address directly, then test DNS; this separates routing errors from resolver errors.
- Confirm that IPv6 is either correctly routed or intentionally excluded, so applications do not bypass an IPv4-only tunnel.
Some sites work and large transfers stall
Suspect MTU or fragmentation before changing cryptographic settings. Compare a smaller packet workload with a sustained transfer, then adjust the tunnel and client MTU consistently and retest. TCP-based OpenVPN can also suffer from performance collapse when TCP is carried inside another lossy TCP path.
A phone stops working after changing networks
For WireGuard, confirm that the peer’s public key and AllowedIPs remain unchanged, that the server can receive UDP on the configured port and that the client is allowed to send keepalive traffic when its NAT mapping would otherwise expire. For OpenVPN, inspect reconnect and profile behavior after the network change.

Review peer-specific AllowedIPs or OpenVPN route and client-isolation policy. Tunnel establishment proves authentication, not that the intended least-privilege routes are in place.
OpenVPN CPU use is unexpectedly high
Check whether the installation supports and enables Data Channel Offload, whether the selected transport is TCP, and whether multiple users are saturating the VPS. Compare the same workload with UDP and with a supported DCO configuration before resizing the server.
Compression is suggested as a speed fix
OpenVPN 2.6 disables compression by default and warns that compression can create VORACLE-, CRIME- or BREACH-style risks. Do not enable it casually. A migration that requires compression needs a documented threat review, compatible clients and a clear reason that outweighs the risk.

Decision guide for common VPS scenarios
One person, a few devices, normal home and mobile networks
Start with WireGuard. Its peer keys, compact configuration and roaming behavior minimize routine administration. Keep a tested OpenVPN profile only if you already know that one of your regular networks blocks UDP.
Remote work from hotels, offices or managed Wi-Fi
Choose OpenVPN when TCP or proxy traversal is a requirement demonstrated by your travel networks. If those networks permit UDP reliably, WireGuard remains simpler; make the decision from observed connectivity rather than a theoretical fear of blocking.
Legacy devices or an existing certificate authority
OpenVPN usually reduces migration effort because TUN/TAP, TLS certificates and broad operating-system support fit established workflows. Calculate the operational cost of maintaining profiles and certificate expiry before committing to a large rollout.
Layer-2 bridging or unusual network topology
Use OpenVPN when Ethernet bridging through TAP is a genuine requirement. If ordinary routed IP access is enough, avoid adding bridging complexity merely because it is available.
Many users and formal access lifecycle
Compare the administration layer as carefully as the protocol. OpenVPN deployments can use mature certificate and profile ecosystems, while WireGuard generally depends on external tooling for enrollment, inventory, revocation and policy. The protocol that is fastest to configure for one user may not be the least expensive to operate for hundreds.

- CPU utilization and steal time on the VPS, not just instantaneous bandwidth.
- Throughput, latency and packet loss by client network.
- Handshake or reconnect failures and the time required to restore service.
- Unexpected route, DNS or IPv6 behavior.
- Peer inventory, certificate expiry where applicable, and the date of the last access review.
- Firewall logs for repeated connection attempts and traffic that falls outside the intended routes.
Set a baseline during a quiet period and revisit it after kernel, client, VPS-plan or protocol-version changes. A performance regression can come from any layer, so record enough context to compare like with like.
Bottom line
For a fresh Linux VPS VPN in 2026, WireGuard is the sensible default when you value a small configuration, public-key peers, roaming and efficient operation. OpenVPN earns the choice when TCP or proxy traversal, Ethernet bridging, certificate/TLS integration, legacy compatibility or a mature management ecosystem is more important than minimal configuration. If the decision hinges on speed, run a controlled test on your own VPS; if it hinges on access from restrictive networks, test those networks before you deploy to everyone.
