The headline refers to Opera’s July 1, 2024 GX update, when its built-in assistant, Aria, gained image generation, image understanding, voice output, chat summaries and source links. That was an expansion of an existing assistant—not a separate AI browser. Since then, Opera GX has added writing and tab workflows, replaced the Aria branding with a rebuilt Opera AI, and introduced Browser Connector for giving external services such as ChatGPT and Claude live browser context.
This timeline matters because the controls, names and availability described in older coverage may no longer match the current GX interface.
What Opera announced on July 1, 2024
Opera’s original announcement described four additions to Aria in Opera GX. Opera said the image generator used Google’s Imagen 2 model. The features were presented as browser-assistant capabilities that could be used while browsing, rather than as a new standalone browser.
- Image generation: Aria could create an image from a text prompt.
- Image understanding: You could upload an image and ask questions about what it contained.
- Voice output: Aria could read its answer aloud.
- Conversation summaries and source links: Aria could condense a chat and provide links to supporting information.
For a player, that could mean asking for a concept image, identifying an item in a screenshot, listening to an explanation while multitasking, or turning a long planning conversation into a short checklist. These are use cases implied by the capabilities, not independent performance tests. Opera’s July 1, 2024 announcement contains the original feature description.

How GX expanded Aria in March 2025
On March 26, 2025, Opera added features that made the assistant more practical for work inside a gaming browser.
Writing Mode 2.0
Writing Mode could draft or rewrite text without making you leave the page. Examples include turning patch-note bullets into a Discord message, drafting the opening of a guide, or rewriting a hardware comparison. Opera’s historical instructions opened the Command Line with Ctrl + / on Windows or Cmd + / on macOS, then required pressing Tab twice until Writing appeared. Some layouts used Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + 7 instead. Those were Aria-era controls and are not guaranteed to work in current builds.
Conversations in ordinary tabs
An Aria conversation could be moved from the sidebar into a normal browser tab. That made it possible to keep an AI discussion beside a walkthrough, livestream or wiki instead of treating it as a temporary sidebar panel.
More contextual answers
Opera said Aria would provide better context, suggestions and links for subjects including gaming, shopping and products. A sensible workflow is to use it to compare graphics cards, summarize release information or extract the key changes from patch notes, then verify the result against the developer or publisher source.

These capabilities had previously appeared through Opera’s AI Feature Drops program before the March update. Opera’s March 2025 announcement documents the rollout.
Aria is now Opera AI
In December 2025, Opera replaced the Aria branding in GX with Opera AI and described the assistant as rebuilt, with a revised interface, faster responses, newer models and improved understanding of page and tab context. Opera also said existing Aria chats would be preserved during the transition.
The current GX feature page advertises the ability to ask about the active webpage or an entire Tab Island, summarize complex game guides, analyze YouTube videos, translate YouTube captions and generate images. Opera says basic use does not require signing in. The December announcements describe the product direction; they do not establish that every page, video or account will work identically.

How to use Opera AI in Opera GX now
- Update GX to the latest version available for your channel.
- Click Ask AI near the top-right of the browser.
- Accept the terms the first time it opens.
- Use Opera AI without signing in, or sign in if you want the higher limits or additional account-dependent functionality Opera offers.
If Ask AI is hidden, Opera says it can be enabled through Easy Setup or Settings; Settings can be opened with Alt + P. The current Opera AI page lists Ctrl + O on Windows and Cmd + O on macOS. Shortcuts and labels can vary by version, keyboard layout and rollout stage, so the visible Ask AI control is the reliable fallback.
Image quotas
Opera’s GX page currently states a limit of up to five images per day for users who are not signed in and up to 100 images per day for signed-in users. These are service quotas displayed by Opera and may change.
Using ChatGPT from the sidebar
- Open the Opera GX sidebar.
- Select the ChatGPT icon.
- If it is missing, open the sidebar’s three-dot menu and enable it.
- Log in or create a ChatGPT account on first use.
ChatGPT in the sidebar is a separate integrated service, not the same product as Opera AI. Opera’s general GX AI page explains the distinction at Browser AI.

What Browser Connector adds
Announced April 16, 2026, Browser Connector is not a renamed Opera AI. It is an integration layer that lets supported external tools such as ChatGPT or Claude receive live information from an Opera browsing session through MCP. Opera says it can expose open-tab content, work across multiple tabs and provide screenshots for visual or graph analysis.

The announcement described the feature as initially available in Early Bird mode. Opera’s setup path was:
- Open Opera GX Settings.
- Search for AI Services.
- Install or enable Browser Connector.
- Connect the supported external AI service.
Availability may differ between stable, Early Bird, Developer and gradual-rollout channels. Check the browser itself rather than assuming the connector is enabled by default. See Opera’s Browser Connector announcement and its setup/status document.

Page access is a meaningful permission
Opera says Opera AI must be allowed to access page content and that you can turn that access off from the AI interface. Accountless access does not mean that no data is processed. Before asking about a Tab Island, inspect what it contains.
- Do not connect live context while banking, using a password manager, reading private messages or viewing health, work or confidential-document pages.
- Browser Connector changes the relationship again because an external provider receives the context you choose to expose.
- The available announcements do not establish every retention, regional or private-window rule; consult the applicable Opera and service privacy documentation for those details.
Verify game information
AI summaries can be wrong or out of date. Check patch numbers and dates, item statistics, build recommendations, prices and release dates against the original developer, publisher or retailer page. For ranked play or other high-stakes decisions, treat a generated answer as a starting point, not authority.

YouTube analysis is not universal
Opera advertises video analysis and caption translation, but a video may lack captions, be unavailable in your region, use an unsupported format or be outside the feature’s current rollout. If analysis fails, try a captioned video or summarize the relevant transcript yourself.
Fixes when a feature is missing
Ask AI or the old Aria icon is absent
- Update Opera GX.
- Check Easy Setup and Settings for AI options.
- Search Settings for “AI” or “AI Services.”
- Confirm whether you are using a stable or Early Bird channel.
- Restart GX after enabling the feature.
A shortcut does nothing
Use the visible Ask AI button. The old Aria shortcuts and the current Opera AI shortcuts differ, and keyboard layouts can change the key combination.
A guide summary is inaccurate
Open the original guide, check its patch date and version number, and compare every consequential statistic before acting on the summary.
Browser Connector exposes more than intended
Disconnect it or close sensitive tabs before granting context. Its purpose is to share live browser information, so this is a central design trade-off rather than an unusual failure.

For GX users, Opera AI is most useful for quick page and Tab Island summaries, drafting messages or guide text, and digesting video content without opening another workflow. The integration is especially convenient if you already use GX’s sidebar and tab organization. Image generation and accountless access add utility beyond a basic text box, subject to Opera’s quotas.
Users who prefer a standalone AI service and do not want browser-context features may gain less from the built-in assistant. Browser Connector is the most significant newer development for people who want ChatGPT or Claude to reason over several live tabs, but it also demands the strictest privacy discipline and may require an external account. Opera GX remains a gaming-focused browser with largely general-purpose AI capabilities, not evidence of a specialized gaming model.
