Optimal Fortnite Graphics Settings to Boost FPS on PC (2026 Guide)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the best Fortnite PC performance in 2026, open Esc → Settings (gear) → Video, choose Fullscreen and Performance rendering, leave 3D Resolution at 100%, set Textures and Meshes to Low, disable VSync, and enable Show FPS. Use Unlimited frame rate unless tearing requires a cap matching your monitor’s refresh rate. These are Epic’s current recommendations, with the exact label and available options varying slightly by client version.

Recommended Fortnite video settings for maximum FPS

From the main menu, press Esc, select the gear icon, and open Video (Epic also documents this as Main Menu → Settings → Video). Apply the following baseline:

Setting Recommended value Why and important qualification
Window Mode Fullscreen Epic recommends it to minimize input latency.
Resolution Your monitor’s default resolution Many competitive players use 1920×1080, but use the panel’s native resolution unless you have a specific reason not to.
VSync Off Reduces synchronization-related latency; enable it only if you deliberately prefer tear-free output.
Rendering Mode Performance Epic’s April 30, 2026 guide describes this current mode as using DirectX 12 while disabling most rendering features to reduce CPU/GPU load and memory use.
Frame Rate Limit Unlimited If you see tearing, cap FPS to your monitor’s default refresh rate instead.
View Distance Near Epic’s Performance Mode graphics-quality recommendation.
3D Resolution 100% Epic starts at 100%; lower it in 10-point steps only if performance is still inadequate.
Textures Low Reduces graphics memory use.
Meshes Low Reduces scene complexity in the Performance preset.

Epic’s full competitive-settings guide is available at Epic Games Store. Its graphics troubleshooting baseline is documented at Epic Games Support.

Advanced settings that help you monitor and reduce latency

Show FPS

Open Advanced Graphics, set Show FPS to Enabled, and watch the counter while changing one setting at a time. This lets you identify whether a change improves sustained performance rather than relying on a single momentary peak.

NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency

On systems with an NVIDIA GPU, set Advanced Graphics → NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency → On + Boost. Epic describes Reflex as reducing GPU latency. This option is NVIDIA-specific; it is not a universal requirement for AMD or Intel hardware.

How to select the correct Performance rendering option

Epic’s newer guide labels the mode simply Performance. An older support article displays the longer label Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity and gives this route: Open Fortnite → menu icon → Display options → Rendering Mode → Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity → Apply → restart Fortnite. The labels should not be treated as two separate confirmed modes. Choose the Performance option your installed client actually displays, apply it, and restart when prompted.

Despite older guides calling it a DX11 or legacy mode, Epic’s April 30, 2026 guide explicitly describes the current Performance setting as using DirectX 12.

What to change when FPS is still too low

  1. Confirm 3D Resolution is initially at 100%.
  2. Reduce it in 10-percentage-point steps (90%, 80%, and so on), checking the FPS counter after each change.
  3. Keep Textures and Meshes at Low and View Distance at Near while testing, so you change one performance variable at a time.
  4. If the game remains unstable, use Settings → Video → Quality Presets → Low, then set 3D Resolution to 100% and raise individual settings gradually until you find a stable balance.

Epic does not require a dedicated GPU for Performance Mode. It says an SSD and at least 6 GB of RAM can reduce hitches and stutters on older hardware, while a dedicated GPU may make overall load smoother; these are recommendations, not guaranteed FPS targets.

Free storage and reduce installation overhead

To remove optional high-resolution assets, open Epic Games Launcher → Library → Fortnite → three dots → Options and uncheck Use High Resolution Textures. Epic says this saves more than 14 GB and reduces the installation to approximately 17 GB when Performance Mode is used.

Fix settings that will not save or Performance Mode will not switch

A read-only GameUserSettings.ini commonly prevents changes from persisting or blocks Performance Mode from enabling or disabling.

  1. Press Windows Key + R.
  2. Enter %localappdata% and press Enter.
  3. Open FortniteGame → Saved → Config → WindowsClient.
  4. Right-click GameUserSettings.ini, choose Properties, clear Read-only, and select Apply.

The equivalent full location is C:Users[username]AppDataLocalFortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. Epic documents this fix at its graphics troubleshooting page and its Performance Mode support article.

Fix crashes, black screens, and freezes

DirectX 12 problems

If DirectX 12 causes crashes, freezing, or a black screen, Epic’s documented workaround is to force the Performance/ES31 path:

Fortnite chooses the integrated GPU

On a laptop or multi-GPU PC, assign Fortnite to the dedicated processor:

  • NVIDIA: NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings → Fortnite → preferred graphics processor → high-performance GPU.
  • AMD: Radeon Settings → Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings → Fortnite → High Performance.

Fullscreen crashes on NVIDIA hardware

Open NVIDIA Control Panel → Adjust desktop size and position, select the display, set Scaling mode → Full-screen, and set Perform scaling on → GPU.

Diagnose performance that degrades during or after play

Heat and airflow

If FPS or graphics quality worsens after several hours, check for overheating. Epic lists blocked vents, dust, and insufficient airflow as possible causes. Clean vents, keep air intakes unobstructed, and retest before changing more settings.

Drivers and background programs

Outdated graphics drivers and background applications can consume resources Fortnite needs. Update the driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU and close unnecessary programs before measuring FPS again. Epic links driver sources and troubleshooting steps from its FPS support article.

Understand black bars in competitive modes

Ranked, tournament, and similar competitive modes are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Side black bars in those modes are expected behavior and do not by themselves indicate a graphics fault.

NVIDIA Control Panel options: optional, not universal

Epic lists NVIDIA-specific driver settings such as Low Latency Mode: Ultra, Power Management mode: Prefer maximum performance, Shader Cache: On, and selected texture-filtering options. These apply only to NVIDIA Control Panel users and are separate from the in-game Reflex setting; they are not mandatory FPS requirements for every PC.
