That scale could make for a remarkably rich puzzle adventure—or a world so demanding that its best ideas become tiring. Before release, the honest answer is that the title’s central question remains open: the official pitch establishes the ambition, not whether the finished game delivers too much of it.
What Order of the Sinking Star promises
Thekla, Inc.’s official site describes a narrative adventure with more than 1,000 interconnected, hand-crafted puzzles, four distinct worlds, unique playable characters, evolving mechanics, exploration, and a mystery. The site’s FAQ says the worlds collide and their puzzle systems intertwine. Those details point to more than a large collection of isolated brainteasers: the stated ambition is to build a world in which ideas from different puzzle systems meet.
The official FAQ estimates, “More than 500 hours of gameplay await the most dedicated of puzzles solvers.” That is the developer’s estimate for its most committed audience, not an independently measured completion time or a promise that every player will need hundreds of hours. The official materials do not specify how much content is optional or how much is needed to reach the story’s ending. Order of the Sinking Star official site and FAQ
Why so much could be a strength
The game’s stated inspirations span several puzzle traditions. The official site names Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes and Mirror Isles by Alan Hazelden, Promesst 1–3 by Sean Barrett, and Heroes of Sokoban 1–3 by Jonah Ostroff. It also credits design contributions from Zach Polansky (Enigmash), Patrick Traynor (Patrick’s Parabox), Marc ten Bosch (Miegakure), and others. This supports a picture of deliberate combination and recombination, not a claim that the game reproduces any one of those works in full. Order of the Sinking Star official site

If the systems remain distinct enough to learn but interact in surprising ways, sheer volume could give the game room to develop ideas gradually and then put them in unfamiliar contexts. Its exploration and narrative framing could also give puzzle solving a broader purpose than clearing a sequence of rooms. Those are possibilities suggested by the design description; they are not yet evidence that the mechanics stay fresh or that the story gives the scale direction.
What would make the scale feel overwhelming
A huge puzzle world can test more than patience. The crucial question is whether players can understand what they have learned, orient themselves among several worlds, and decide where to go next without losing the thread. If progress depends on remembering many rules or revisiting areas whose state is hard to read, abundance could turn into cognitive load. If new puzzles mostly repeat familiar work rather than meaningfully recombine ideas, the advertised count could feel less substantial than it sounds.

- 3 Levels: Once your team has mastered Level 1, there are 2 more levels of play, each with more fish, more orders, and more disruptions to try and beat the clock!
- Easy, Quick Play: With easy-to-follow setup instructions for each level of play, Order Up! Fish Market is quick and fun to play, so you can test your skills again and again to improve your score and try to beat level 3!
- Route choice: Can players find a satisfying path through the world, or does the scale leave them unsure what to tackle?
- Navigation and memory: Is it clear where to return and what has changed when puzzle systems intertwine?
- Meaningful variation: Do evolving mechanics create new deductions, or do they mainly extend the amount of solving?
- Story and optionality: Does the narrative give exploration direction, and can players make progress without solving every puzzle?
The official descriptions establish interconnected systems and exploration, but they do not establish actual pacing, difficulty, accessibility, performance, or the share of puzzles that can be skipped. Those questions require evidence from the released game; a high puzzle count alone cannot answer them.
Release date and platforms announced
As of October 7, 2026, the official site, Steam, and Nintendo’s US store listing scheduled the game for October 8, 2026, on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2. These are announced dates and platforms, not confirmation that every edition launched on schedule or has identical features.
Nintendo’s US listing describes a digital Switch 2 edition for one player on one system, gives an estimated file size of 18.4 GB, and lists Mild Fantasy Violence. The file size and rating apply to that US store listing; they should not be assumed to describe every platform edition. Nintendo US store listing · Steam listing
Thekla is the developer, and the official site identifies Jonathan Blow as director. Arc Games described the project as led by Blow and said it had been in development for ten years since The Witness; that is the publisher’s time-relative description, not a current count of years. Is Order of the Sinking Star too big?
There is not yet enough evidence to call it either a triumph of abundance or an example of excess. The official pitch makes clear why the question matters: the game is designed around a vast number of puzzles whose systems cross between worlds. Whether that design feels absorbing or exhausting depends on how the released game handles navigation, optional progress, pacing, and the clarity of its evolving rules—not on the advertised number alone.
