Oregon State University researchers report that a new porous material called BVR-X captured carbon dioxide from a highly humid factory-flue test stream containing 4% CO2. The result points to a possible way to make carbon capture work without first removing as much moisture—but it is a reported laboratory result, not evidence that factory steam has been turned into a commercial capture system.
What the BVR-X report says
KXL Northwest News reported on October 5, 2026, that researchers at Oregon State University (OSU) developed BVR-X, a metal-organic framework, or MOF, intended to capture CO2 from humid factory flue emissions. The report says the researchers filed a patent application.
According to KXL, BVR-X directs water and carbon dioxide to different regions of its nanosized pores. That separation is relevant because moisture can interfere with capture materials or make it necessary to dry flue gas before treatment. The report says BVR-X captured CO2 from a highly humid stream containing 4% CO2 and maintained performance through dozens of capture-and-release cycles.
The 4% figure describes the CO2 concentration in the reported test stream. It is not a capture efficiency or a measure of how much CO2 the material can hold. KXL’s account does not give the underlying experimental tables or specify capacity, selectivity, regeneration energy, test duration, or comparative baselines. Those omissions prevent a meaningful ranking against other capture materials.

What “factory steam” means here
The headline’s “factory steam” framing refers to moisture in factory flue emissions. The report describes BVR-X as handling humid gas while capturing CO2; it does not say that steam itself is converted into a capture product. The proposed benefit is avoiding or reducing the need to dry a wet gas stream before carbon capture.
Why performance in humid gas matters
Industrial exhaust can contain water vapor, so a material that continues to capture CO2 in humid conditions could address a practical treatment challenge. But one reported test condition does not establish how the material would perform across different factories, exhaust compositions, operating temperatures, or larger equipment. The KXL report does not provide enough information to assess those factors.

What is—and is not—established
- Reported: BVR-X is a MOF that directs water and CO2 to different pore regions, captured CO2 from a highly humid stream containing 4% CO2, and retained performance through dozens of cycles, according to KXL.
- Not established by the report: a specific capture capacity, selectivity, energy requirement, test duration, advantage over a named alternative, or performance at industrial scale.
- Patent status: KXL says a patent application was filed. An application is not a granted patent and does not by itself establish a licensed or commercially available product.
- Deployment: The report does not establish independent replication, factory deployment, or commercial readiness.
Kyriakos Stylianou, an OSU chemistry professor and director of the university’s Materials Discovery Laboratory, was quoted by KXL as saying: “Our new material does something unusual: It responds to water by changing in a way that lets it keep capturing CO2 effectively even under very humid conditions,”
Oregon State is not Ohio State
This BVR-X report concerns Oregon State University in Corvallis. It is separate from The Ohio State University in Columbus, which reported a different 2026 process involving CO2 and industrial byproducts that produces hydrogen and calcite. Ohio State said further research is needed to evaluate that process at larger scales; its work is not evidence for BVR-X’s performance.

Oregon State also published a 2024 report about a different copper-based MOF, mCBMOF-1, whose CO2 uptake improved after ammonia exposure. That earlier work provides background on MOFs, but it does not verify the BVR-X results.

A useful technical comparison would test candidate materials under the same flue-gas humidity and CO2 concentration, then report capacity, selectivity, regeneration energy, cycling durability, test duration, and demonstration scale. The available account does not supply enough of those measurements to determine how BVR-X compares with alternatives or whether it can meet industrial operating needs.
