Rod Fergusson’s proposed direction for Gears 6 would have taken the story beyond Sera, using UIR rocket technology introduced in Gears 5 to reach a new place. He said it would not turn the series into a planet-hopping space adventure. It was an idea from before he left The Coalition—not a confirmed script or current production plan—and he did not disclose how it would resolve Gears 5’s choice between JD and Del.
What was the original plan for Gears of War 6?
Former Gears franchise lead Rod Fergusson described a sequel direction built around the UIR space program. In Gears 5, players encounter UIR rocket technology; Fergusson’s idea was that taking over UIR territory also meant inheriting that program, creating a reason for the story to leave Sera and explore what the technology meant beyond the planet. GamesRadar+ reported his explanation in November 2024.
Fergusson put the core idea simply: “Gears 6 was to leave Sera.” He also cautioned against imagining a broad interplanetary saga: “Not that you’d be hopping [between planets], but… it was old, Russian-era, sputnik-type tech, so we weren’t going to start Mass Effect-ing this.”
A new destination, not a full space-opera reset
The remarks point to a story that would venture away from the familiar setting and investigate a new place, while keeping the rocket technology’s limits in view. They do not identify that place, outline a mission, name a new cast, or provide a complete plot. Fergusson’s comments establish a proposed story direction, not a finished synopsis.

What about Gears 5’s JD-or-Del choice?
Gears 5 ends with a player choice between saving JD and saving Del, leaving the other character dead. GamesRadar noted that a sequel would have needed to address the choice, but Fergusson did not reveal which outcome his version would treat as canon or how it would preserve player choice. There is no basis in his disclosed comments to say which character would have survived.
Actor Liam McIntyre, who plays JD, separately pitched a scenario in which Del survives, Marcus goes rogue, and a Swarm-controlled JD confronts him. That was McIntyre’s personal suggestion, not a confirmed developer plan; GameSpot reported the pitch on April 3, 2026. Fergusson also wrote a proposed plot synopsis before leaving The Coalition, but GameSpot said he suspected it had been discarded and did not reproduce it. The disclosed leave-Sera concept should not be mistaken for proof of the synopsis’s full contents.

Does E-Day mean Gears 6 is canceled?
No. The Coalition’s decision to make Gears of War: E-Day next does not establish that the Gears 4 and Gears 5 storylines are canceled or abandoned. In a June 2024 Xbox Wire interview, brand director Nicole Fawcette said the studio was proud of Gears 4 and Gears 5 and was not moving away from those storylines; the team chose E-Day because it wanted to tell the origin story. E-Day is a mainline prequel set 14 years before the first Gears of War.
What The Coalition has said about what comes next
The latest stated position in the available reporting is that The Coalition has not decided what will follow E-Day. In a Gamescom interview published September 13, 2026, creative director Matt Searcy said there was no immediate next-game plan because the team had focused on E-Day. He described “12 years of universe to explore” between E-Day and the original game as storytelling potential, not as an announced sequel or schedule. Vandal reported the interview.

That leaves Gears 6’s future open: E-Day is the next installment, while the studio has not announced what game will follow it. Fergusson’s off-Sera idea is one earlier proposed direction; it is not evidence that a current Gears 6 is in production or that the idea remains in The Coalition’s plans.
