Neither original hardware nor emulation is sufficient on its own. Original hardware preserves the physical platform and can provide a historically grounded way to experience a game, but consoles, displays and media can eventually fail. Emulation can keep obsolete software usable on current computers, but its accuracy depends on how well the original environment is understood and recreated. For preservation, keep original materials and records where possible, and use emulation as an evaluated way to extend access.

What does “preserving a game” mean?

A game is more than the software that makes it run. Its experience can depend on the original hardware, media, controller, display behavior and the circumstances in which it was played. Preserving only one component can leave important parts unavailable or difficult to interpret later.

It helps to distinguish preservation from access. Preservation means retaining the game and the evidence needed to understand it over time. Access means being able to use or experience it. A working original console may offer valuable evidence about a game’s historical platform, but may not remain usable indefinitely. An emulator may make the software accessible on a current computer without, by itself, preserving the original console or proving that every aspect of the experience is faithful.

That distinction is why “which is better?” depends on the goal. For studying a surviving platform, original hardware is important. For making an obsolete environment usable now, emulation can be practical. For a durable preservation effort, the strongest approach is to retain original materials and documentation while using emulation as an access method whose results can be assessed.

Original hardware and emulation compared

Preservation question Original hardware Emulation
What does it retain or provide? The physical platform and a direct way to study or demonstrate it, when the hardware, media and necessary equipment still work. A software recreation of an old hardware environment that can allow obsolete software to run on a current computer.
What does access depend on? Working hardware, compatible original media, and often a suitable display and controller. Suitable emulation software and game software, plus records that help assess how the recreated environment behaves.
What can go wrong over time? Physical systems and media can degrade or stop working. The original console is not needed for every play session, but usable software, emulators, formats and supporting records are still needed.
How should behavior be judged? The hardware gives a direct point of reference, although the condition of an individual system or display can affect what it produces. Fidelity varies. Evaluation needs evidence about the original system and the game, rather than an assumption that any emulator is equivalent.
Best preservation role Retain and study the original platform and its materials. Extend practical access and help keep obsolete environments usable, with accuracy evaluated against available evidence.

This is a category-level comparison, not a ranking of particular consoles or emulator programs. The sources do not establish universal emulator accuracy, model-specific results, prices or a system-by-system comparison.

What original hardware contributes—and what it cannot guarantee

A physical reference for the game’s platform

Original equipment lets researchers and museums study the platform on which a game was designed to run. The Museum of Modern Art describes a conservation protocol that starts by obtaining original software formats, such as cartridges or discs, and hardware when possible. Its approach also values technical documentation and conversations with designers because those materials can inform future emulation and research.

A working original setup can also make a historically grounded demonstration possible. The Centre for Computing History describes using original hardware and CRT displays in exhibits. That choice preserves a direct connection to physical equipment and display technology rather than presenting the game only through a later software recreation.

It is not a permanent access guarantee

Keeping a console on a shelf is not the same as ensuring a game can be played in the future. The Centre for Computing History explicitly anticipates that its hardware will not function forever. The physical system and the game media have finite lives, and use also depends on compatible equipment such as an appropriate display and controller.

Even when a console still works, one surviving unit is evidence of that unit’s behavior and condition. It should not automatically be treated as proof of how every system or display behaved. The comparison sources do not evaluate hardware revisions or quantify variations between individual devices, so claims about a specific model need evidence specific to that model.

Keep the surrounding evidence with the equipment

Original hardware is most useful for preservation when it is accompanied by records that explain what it is and how it was used. MoMA notes the value of technical documentation and designer interviews. The Library of Congress emphasizes that future usability can be obstructed by missing information about formats, software, licensing or hardware dependencies. Those records help future users understand what materials they have and what may be required to render or interpret them.

What emulation makes possible—and what it does not

Access without relying on a working console for every session

The National Archives of Australia defines emulation as recreating the behavior of old hardware on a current computer so that obsolete software can run. That can make a game or other complex digital work usable even when its original platform is difficult to access. The Smithsonian Institution Archives likewise describes emulation as a strategy for access to digital packages, including games, that depend on particular hardware, operating systems or software.

For a player, the practical advantage is that access can be provided through a current computer rather than requiring a working original console every time. For an archive or museum, emulation can be one way to keep an obsolete environment usable. Neither point means that the original hardware has been preserved by the emulator or that the result is automatically identical to play on the original system.

Recreation needs evidence and evaluation

An emulator produces behavior through software. Whether that behavior corresponds closely to a particular original environment depends on what is known about that environment and how well the recreation represents it. A console-game preservation paper published by the Digital Preservation Coalition and iPRES in 2008 says emulation works in principle for early console games, but identifies problems with treating it as a general preservation alternative.

The paper describes obstacles that make preservation difficult: proprietary hardware, unavailable documentation, varied media and non-standard controllers. These are not just technical inconveniences. They affect the evidence available for rebuilding an environment and judging the result. The 2008 finding is useful for understanding those challenges, but it is not a current ranking of individual emulators or a test of every game and system.

Record which recreation you are using

Because emulation is a method that can be evaluated rather than a guarantee of equivalence, a preservation record should identify the emulator and its version, the settings used, and any known differences from the reference experience. This is a practical way to make a later assessment more meaningful: another person can tell which environment produced a captured result and distinguish the game’s behavior from the choices made to run it.

The available sources do not give a universal settings list or prescribe particular emulator versions. Those details depend on the game and system. Avoid describing an emulated copy as “the original experience” unless the basis for that claim is clear and documented.

Why the controller, display and play record matter

Gameplay is part of the evidence

A file that contains game software does not, by itself, document how a game looks, responds to input or unfolds during play. Controllers and display behavior can affect the experience, and context can help explain what a particular scene or sequence demonstrates. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s “Level Up: Playing to Document and Preserve Video Games” describes recording scenarios to contextualize audiovisual and gameplay experience and to help future staff assess preservation or emulation results.

The Strong National Museum of Play’s Video Game Play Capture Project provides a complementary example: museum staff have recorded gameplay from thousands of games on original hardware. The project’s records document play and can help improve other preservation methods, including emulation. A capture is not a substitute for the game or its hardware, but it can preserve evidence of what happened during a known play session.

Use captures to support—not overstate—comparison

When gameplay records are used to assess emulation, they are most useful when their context is recorded: which game and platform were used, whether play occurred on original hardware or through emulation, and which scenario was captured. Without that information, a video may show an audiovisual result without making its source or relevance clear.

A recording also represents a particular session, not every possible behavior of a game. It can help future staff compare what they see with preserved evidence, but it cannot alone establish that an emulator matches every interaction or circumstance. This is why play capture, original materials and technical documentation work best as complementary forms of evidence.

A practical preservation workflow

The following steps turn the complementary approach into a usable plan for a collector, museum or preservation project. They do not assume a particular console or emulator; the required materials and technical details vary by game.

  1. Identify the materials and dependencies. Record the game’s original software format, the hardware it depends on, and any known operating-system or software requirements. Note whether the original media and platform are present and functional. The Library of Congress warns that missing formats, software, licensing information or hardware can prevent future rendering even when digital bits survive.
  2. Retain original materials when possible. Preserve the original software format and hardware where they are available, consistent with MoMA’s conservation approach. Record the identifying information you have rather than assuming that a bare game file explains its origin or dependencies.
  3. Gather interpretive records. Retain technical documentation and relevant contextual information, including designer interviews when available. Record preservation actions so a future custodian can understand what was done and why. These records help explain the materials and support later attempts to render or emulate them.
  4. Document a play session on original hardware when possible. Record representative gameplay scenarios and identify the platform and equipment used. The Strong’s capture project shows how recorded play can document games on original hardware; the Smithsonian American Art Museum describes using scenarios to contextualize gameplay and audiovisual experience.
  5. Use emulation as an access method when appropriate. Record the emulator and version, the settings used, the software being run, and any known differences you observe. Treat those notes as part of the preservation record, not as proof of fidelity. If original hardware or documentation is unavailable, state that limitation clearly rather than implying a direct comparison was performed.
  6. Compare against available evidence. Use original hardware, technical documentation, gameplay captures and other reliable records as reference points. Identify what the comparison can establish and what it cannot. A known scenario can support assessment of that scenario; it does not establish that every possible behavior matches.
  7. Keep the preservation record with the materials. Preserve information about the formats, dependencies, equipment and actions taken alongside the game materials. A bit-level copy can retain data without ensuring that future users can render or interpret it, as the Library of Congress explains.

Choose the method by the job

If the priority is… More useful emphasis Reason
Studying a physical console or demonstrating a game on its original platform Original hardware, with the software and equipment documented It provides direct access to the physical platform, when the system and media work.
Making an obsolete environment usable on a current computer Emulation, with its version and settings recorded Emulation recreates old hardware behavior on a current computer and can support access without depending on a working original console for each session.
Preserving a game for future study and access A complementary collection of original materials, documentation, gameplay records and evaluated emulation No single component covers the physical platform, digital content, interpretive context and future usability at once.

This framework does not establish that one method is always superior for every game. Hardware condition, available documentation, controller needs and the particular emulator all matter. A broad comparison cannot replace a system- and game-specific assessment.

Common preservation mistakes

Assuming a surviving file guarantees future use

Preserving the bits is important, but it is not enough to guarantee that software can be rendered later. The Library of Congress identifies obsolete formats, missing or restricted software and unavailable hardware as barriers to long-term usability. Keep information about dependencies and preservation actions with the digital materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating an emulator as a preservation copy of everything

An emulator may make software accessible while leaving the original console, media, controller and display behavior unpreserved. It also needs evaluation against evidence. Describe it as an access method or a recreation, and explain the basis for any claim about its accuracy.

Keeping hardware without its context

A console or cartridge can be difficult for a later custodian to interpret if its identity, dependencies and preservation history are not recorded. Pair physical materials with technical and contextual documentation where available. That information can assist future study and attempts to recreate the environment.

Recording gameplay without identifying the conditions

A video of a game is more useful when its source and scenario are known. Record whether it came from original hardware or emulation, what was being demonstrated, and which relevant equipment or software produced it. Otherwise, a future viewer may not know what the recording can reliably show.

So, which is better?

Original hardware is better for retaining and studying the physical platform when it remains functional. Emulation is often more practical for making obsolete software accessible on current computers. Neither alone secures a game’s long-term preservation: physical systems and media can fail, while emulation depends on software, formats and records that support future use and assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For preservation, retain the original software and hardware when possible, preserve documentation and gameplay records, and use emulation as a tested access method. Keeping those elements together gives future users both a route to experience the game and evidence with which to understand how that experience relates to its original platform.
