For original Xbox emulation with xemu, check the compatibility tracker for the specific game, prepare the required system files and an XISO game image, and expect results to depend on the title and setup. Ordinary saves are stored on the virtual hard drive’s E partition; save-state snapshots are stored on the hard-drive image. xemu’s file-acquisition guidance is the project’s stated position, not a complete legal answer for every jurisdiction.
Does a particular original Xbox game work in xemu?
Check xemu’s title-specific compatibility tracker rather than assuming that a game works because another title does. If a game is marked playable but fails on your setup, the FAQ recommends trying the xemu version cited on that game’s compatibility page.

A playable report is not a guarantee for every computer or configuration. The project identifies possible causes of failure that include system issues, a corrupted cache, a faulty disc dump, and compatibility regressions. Check the reported xemu version and the game image before treating a failure as a general compatibility verdict.
xemu does not publish a universal compatibility percentage in the cited documentation. The useful measure is the individual title’s reported status and tested version, interpreted alongside your own setup.

Where does xemu store game saves and save states?
Ordinary game saves
Regular game saves are stored on the E partition of xemu’s virtual hard drive. The FAQ says the partition’s contents can be accessed over FTP. Some saves are tied to the console that created them; if a save does not work, xemu suggests trying that console’s EEPROM.
Save-state snapshots
Snapshot data is stored on the hard-drive image and is not easily extractable. Back up your virtual hard-drive image before changing EEPROM settings: the FAQ warns that saves may also be tied to the hard-drive key.

What files and game formats does xemu need?
System files
xemu’s required-files documentation lists three system components: an MCPX boot ROM image, a compatible BIOS image, and a hard-disk image. Some required items are copyrighted and are not distributed with the emulator. xemu also notes that an unmodified retail BIOS cannot boot games because certain key DRM functions are not implemented.
Game images
xemu expects a game in XISO form. Its disc-image documentation explains that redump-style ISOs are not supported directly, though they can be converted. Compressed CHD images are not supported, and the FAQ says xemu does not launch a game’s default.xbe directly.

What does xemu say about legality?
xemu’s disc-image documentation states: “The only legal way to acquire these files is to dump them from your real, physical media.” Its required-files page says some items cannot be distributed because doing so would violate copyright laws, and its About page says piracy is not tolerated. These are the project’s stated guidelines, not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion.
Rules for making backups, circumventing protections, and using game or system files vary by location and circumstances. The cited documentation does not establish a legal answer for every jurisdiction or situation. If legality matters to your use, consult qualified advice for your location.

What hardware and controller do you need?
xemu lists Windows, macOS, and Linux support and requires a GPU compatible with OpenGL 4.0. The project cautions that performance varies by hardware and may change as xemu evolves, so the documentation does not support a guaranteed frame rate or a promise that every title will run smoothly on a particular computer.
Original Xbox controllers can connect to a PC through a USB adapter. If the operating system detects a controller but xemu does not map it correctly, xemu’s controller guide documents loading an external SDL controller mapping database. The cited guide does not endorse a specific adapter model.
