osu! skins replace parts of the game’s default presentation—such as images, interface elements, and sounds—with assets chosen by the skin’s creator. To use one, open or drag an .osk file into osu!, or extract a .zip or .rar archive and place the folder containing skin.ini in the game’s Skins folder. The best fit depends on your game mode and what you find clear and comfortable; no skin is established as universally best.
What an osu! skin changes
A skin is a collection of images and audio clips that replaces some of osu!’s defaults. It can change many prominent visual and sound elements, including parts of the interface. osu!’s official documentation describes more than 200 skinnable elements, excluding individual frames in animations; you do not need to replace them all for a skin to work.
Skins may be made for osu!, taiko, catch, or mania, and some are designed around particular playstyles or mod combinations. Elements a skin does not include use the game’s defaults, so an incomplete skin can still be usable.
How to choose a skin
There is no official ranking that identifies one skin as best for everyone. Compare candidates by the things you will actually see and hear during play:

- Mode: Check that the skin supports the mode you play. Skinning covers osu!, taiko, catch, and mania.
- Legibility: Look for visuals that are easy for you to distinguish without distracting clutter.
- Sound: Consider whether the included sounds suit your preferences.
- Interface: Check the menus and other interface elements, not just gameplay visuals.
- Playstyle or mods: Some skins are tailored to particular playstyles or mod combinations. That is a design choice, not evidence that a skin improves performance.
The official osu! wiki points players to Work In Progress Skins and Remixed Skins forums, a completed-skins compendium, and a pro-player collection. Players also share skins on userpages, in video descriptions, and through Twitch chat commands. These sources and their available links can change, so check the destination and the skin’s mode before downloading.
How to install an osu! skin
- If the download is an
.oskfile: Open it with osu! or drag and drop it into the game. - If it is a
.zipor.rararchive: Extract it, then move the resulting skin folder—the one containingskin.ini—into the osu! installation’sSkinsfolder. - Select the skin in osu!: Once imported or placed in the folder, choose it in the game’s skin options.
A skin does not have to include every possible asset. If an element is missing, osu! uses the corresponding default instead.

How to reload a skin
If you have changed skin files and need osu! to refresh them, select the skin and press Ctrl + Alt + Shift + S. Restarting osu! or starting its updater is an alternative.

To export a skin for release, the official skinning FAQ describes exporting it as an .osk from the client. It also recommends removing unused files before sharing. Check the current osu! forum rules before posting: the FAQ says edited skins count as mixed skins and may not be posted in the skinning subforums; R15 skins require a warning, and R18 content is prohibited in the osu! community. These community rules may change, so consult the current rules rather than relying on an old copy.
