Classic Otto DIY is a 3D-printable, Arduino-compatible biped that can walk, dance, make sounds and avoid obstacles. A basic build uses a Nano ATmega328-compatible board, four SG90 micro servos and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor. This guide covers the classic version—not the newer HP Otto, which is a separate product path with different hardware and features.

What is the classic Otto Arduino robot?

Otto DIY is an open-source maker project built around a small two-legged robot. Its four servos move the legs and feet; a buzzer produces sounds; and an ultrasonic sensor can detect obstacles for an avoidance routine. The official project describes the classic design and its build materials at Otto DIY. The newer HP Otto is a distinct version, so its hardware or capabilities should not be assumed to apply to this Arduino build.

For programming, the official kit page lists Otto Blockly and Arduino IDE as options. Code-first builders can use the examples in the OttoDIYLib repository, which includes movement, servo calibration and ultrasonic obstacle-avoidance sketches.

What parts do you need?

The classic project’s basic parts list specifies these components. Check the current build guide for exact wiring, board revision, battery details and matching print files before buying or assembling.

Part Purpose and buying check
Nano ATmega328-compatible board Controller specified for the basic build. Confirm its dimensions and USB connector fit the intended Nano I/O shield; some clones may need a USB-serial driver.
Nano I/O shield Provides the project’s specified connections for the Nano. Match it to the board version.
Four SG90 9 g micro servos Actuators for leg and foot movement. Confirm mounting dimensions and calibrate their positions before expecting a stable gait.
HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor Distance sensor used by the obstacle-avoidance example.
Piezo buzzer Produces the robot’s sounds.
Female-to-female Dupont wires Connect the electronics according to the build instructions.
AA battery holder, four AA batteries and an on/off switch Power components named in the basic list. Follow the project’s power instructions; do not assume the USB programming connection is also the operating-power arrangement.
Printed head, body, legs and feet Form the robot’s enclosure and moving structure. Use files for the exact Otto variant being built.
USB-A-to-Mini-USB cable Listed for connecting the Nano during programming; verify the cable connector matches the board.

The listed tools are a small Phillips screwdriver, computer, scissors or pliers, and a 3D printer. The complete basic parts list is in the Otto DIY project repository.

Should you buy a kit or source parts?

A bundled kit can reduce the work of matching components, while sourcing individual parts gives you more control over the board, materials and shell. Otto DIY describes its Builder Kit as adding plastic body pieces to what is in the Maker Kit; check the current product descriptions rather than assuming every listing has the same contents.

Build path Best fit What to verify
Builder Kit You want a single bundled path and the printed body parts included. Exact Otto version, Nano board and shield, four compatible servos, HC-SR04, batteries, cable, printed pieces and matching manual.
Maker Kit or individual parts You already have a printer, want to select components, or plan to customize the shell. Whether printed parts are excluded; the exact board, shield and electronics supplied; battery and cable inclusion; and access to files and code for the same version.

See the official Otto DIY shop for its kit descriptions, and compare the listing against the project bill of materials. Product configurations can change; confirm contents and battery inclusion before ordering.

How to get started with the Arduino build

  1. Choose the classic DIY version. Confirm the kit or files are for the classic Otto biped, not HP Otto.
  2. Match the parts and printed body. Use the classic parts list and variant-specific print files; confirm the board and shield fit and that the listed sensors, servos, power parts and cable are included.
  3. Assemble from the current guide. Follow the official manual for the exact wiring, board revision and power arrangement. Do not infer wiring from a different Otto version.
  4. Set up the programming environment. Use Arduino IDE or Otto Blockly as listed on the official kit page. For Arduino sketches, install the matching OttoDIYLib and start with its examples.
  5. Check connections and calibrate. Verify each servo and the ultrasonic sensor against your wiring. Run a servo-calibration example and adjust neutral positions before trying to walk.
  6. Try movement, then obstacle avoidance. Start with a movement example, then try Otto_avoid.ino, which uses the ultrasonic sensor to avoid obstacles. Compare the example’s pin assignments with your actual wiring and change them if needed.

The library’s default example pin assignments are not a guarantee that every assembled robot uses those connections. The wiring and sketch must agree.

Can you build Otto without a 3D printer?

Yes, if you obtain printed body pieces that match the classic Otto version. The basic design calls for a printed head, body, legs and feet, but a 3D printer is not necessary if you use a kit or source compatible printed parts. A generic or HP Otto part set may not fit the classic build, so verify the variant before assembling.

Is Otto a beginner-friendly Arduino project?

It is a hands-on project with a documented parts list and example sketches, but assembly involves both electronics and moving mechanical parts. A first-time builder should work from the current manual, confirm wiring and power before connecting components, and treat servo calibration as part of setup rather than expecting a ready-made walking gait. The project materials do not establish a guaranteed build time, success rate or learning outcome.
