“out_sqr.dll” errors you may see
Windows or your media player may display one of these messages:
- “This application failed to start because out_sqr.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading out_sqr.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load out_sqr.dll.”
- “The program can’t start because out_sqr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “out_sqr.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
out_sqr.dll is the Advanced Crossfading Output plug-in from SqrSoft, originally built for Winamp. It is not a Windows system file.
The 60-second answer
Close Winamp, WACUP, MediaMonkey, or the affected player. Open that program’s installation folder and look for its Plugins directory. If out_sqr.dll is absent, restore it from the player’s trusted installer or reinstall the complete SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading Output package into that directory.
Do not download an isolated copy from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or run regsvr32 against it. This is an application plug-in, not a normal Windows component or COM server.

If you no longer need SqrSoft crossfading, disable or remove the plug-in instead. That is usually safer than forcing an obsolete output module to load.
What out_sqr.dll belongs to
The file belongs to SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading Output, an output plug-in for Winamp-compatible audio players. It provides features such as:
- Crossfading between tracks
- Gap killing
- Audio buffering
- Related output and playback controls
The internal description commonly associated with the file is “Advanced Crossfading Output v1.5 for Winamp.” The package and the individual DLL are not necessarily labelled with the same version, so do not assume that a file’s internal version is the version of the installer that supplied it.
MediaMonkey and WACUP can use Winamp-compatible plug-ins. A missing file may therefore appear after installing, moving, updating, or removing one of these players.

No. It is a third-party application DLL from SqrSoft.
It should normally be located below the active media player’s installation directory, commonly in a folder named:
Plugins
It should not normally be placed in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
C:Windows
The SysWOW64 name is confusing, but copying the plug-in there will not make a 32-bit media plug-in work correctly.
Why the error appeared
The likely causes are:
- The SqrSoft plug-in was never installed or was deleted.
- The DLL was copied into the wrong player’s
Pluginsfolder. - Winamp, WACUP, or MediaMonkey was moved to a new location.
- Antivirus software quarantined the file.
- The plug-in installation is incomplete or corrupt.
- A 32-bit plug-in is being loaded by an incompatible 64-bit-only host.
- A companion file such as
gen_acf.dllis crashing the player. out_sqr.dllexists, but one of its dependencies is missing.
The message “specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
Fix 1: Check the active player’s Plugins folder
Start with the player that displays the error.
Winamp
- Close Winamp completely.
- Right-click the Winamp shortcut and select Open file location.
- If this opens a shortcut location, right-click the shortcut again and choose Open file location.
- Look for a folder named
Plugins. - Check whether
out_sqr.dllis inside it. - Start Winamp.
- Open Options > Preferences.
- Select Plug-ins > Output.
- Select the SqrSoft output plug-in if it appears.
If Winamp is installed in a custom or portable folder, use that installation’s own Plugins directory. Do not place the file in a different Winamp installation by mistake.
MediaMonkey
MediaMonkey’s add-on instructions use the player’s Plugins directory for this plug-in.

- Close MediaMonkey.
- Open the MediaMonkey installation folder.
- Open its
Pluginsfolder. - Confirm that
out_sqr.dllis present. - Start MediaMonkey.
- For older MediaMonkey versions, open Tools > Options > Player > Output Plug-ins.
- For MediaMonkey 5, open Tools > Options > Player > Audio Output (Plug-ins).
- Select the SqrSoft output plug-in and apply the change.
The exact installation path can differ between a standard installation, a portable installation, and a per-user installation. The important point is that the file must be in the Plugins directory used by the running copy of MediaMonkey.
WACUP
- Close WACUP.
- Open the WACUP installation directory.
- Open
Plugins. - Check for
out_sqr.dll. - Start WACUP and open its output plug-in settings.
- Select the SqrSoft output plug-in if it loads correctly.
If the player crashes during startup rather than showing a missing-file message, continue to the gen_acf.dll section below.

Fix 2: Restore or reinstall the complete plug-in package
If out_sqr.dll is missing, the safest repair is the complete SqrSoft package rather than a loose DLL.
- Close the media player.
- Check its installed-program list for SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading Output.
- If an uninstaller is available, use it.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Obtain the complete package from the original publisher or a reputable software archive that preserves the original installer.
- Verify that the package is intended for the Winamp-compatible player you use.
- Run the installer.
- If Windows asks for administrator approval, confirm only when you trust the installer.
- Reopen the player’s
Pluginsdirectory and confirm that the installer placed the files there. - Start the player and select SqrSoft under its output settings.
A historically listed package is named sqracf-1.7.9-1243.exe, but package names and installation paths can vary. Treat that name as an identifier for the SqrSoft package, not as proof that every copy of out_sqr.dll should have the same internal version.
If the original installer is already on the computer, use it instead of searching for the DLL by itself. Check old installer folders, backups, application archives, and the player’s original setup media.
If you copy the file manually
Manual copying is acceptable only when transferring a trusted plug-in between matching Winamp-style installations.

- Close both media players.
- Copy the complete SqrSoft plug-in files from the trusted source.
- Paste them into the active player’s
Pluginsfolder. - Do not overwrite a working installation until you have made a backup.
- Start the player and enable the output plug-in.
A complete package may include configuration, presets, dependencies, or companion files. Copying only out_sqr.dll may leave the installation incomplete.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or block an old plug-in because legacy software can use outdated loading methods. That does not prove the file is safe or malicious.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an action involving Winamp, WACUP, MediaMonkey, SqrSoft, or
out_sqr.dll. - Review the detection name and file path.
- Confirm that the file came from a trusted original installer.
- Restore it only when you have verified the source and detection.
- Reinstall the complete package if the file was removed.
- Start the player and test playback.
If another antivirus product is installed, open its quarantine or detection history instead.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly to force the plug-in to load. If an exclusion is genuinely necessary, limit it to the trusted player or plug-in folder and remove the exclusion if you stop using the software.

Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Available file records identify out_sqr.dll as a 32-bit Win32 plug-in. There is no reliable evidence that a native 64-bit build exists.
That means the host application generally needs to support 32-bit Winamp plug-ins. A native 64-bit-only player cannot load this DLL simply because the file is present.
Check the player architecture as follows:
- Open Settings > System > About to confirm the Windows architecture.
- Open the media player’s Help > About page.
- Look for
32-bit,64-bit,x86, orx64. - Check the player’s installation directory and installer name if the About box does not identify it.
- Use a compatible 32-bit Winamp-style host if the plug-in requires one.
A 64-bit version of Windows can run many 32-bit applications. The important distinction is the architecture of the host player, not only the architecture of Windows.
Do not download a file advertised as an “x64” version of out_sqr.dll unless the publisher provides reliable evidence for that build.
Fix 5: Test the companion gen_acf.dll
Some SqrSoft installations include gen_acf.dll, a controller or companion plug-in. A startup crash may be caused by that file rather than by out_sqr.dll.
WACUP has documented a compatibility problem involving gen_acf.dll where the companion plug-in could crash during loading while out_sqr.dll was not the direct cause.
To test it:
- Close WACUP or the affected player.
- Open the player’s
Pluginsfolder. - Locate
gen_acf.dll. - Rename it to something such as:
gen_acf.dll.disabled
- Start the player.
- Test whether the application now opens and plays audio.
If the crash stops, leave the companion disabled or reinstall a compatible SqrSoft package. Do not delete it immediately if you may need the configuration later.
If the player still crashes, temporarily rename out_sqr.dll as well:

If the player then starts, select its standard output plug-in and decide whether SqrSoft is still necessary.
Fix 6: Check configuration and dependency files
A working out_sqr.dll can still fail if the installation around it is incomplete.

Look in the same plug-in directory for related files such as:
out_sqr.ini
gen_acf.dll
out_sqr.key
The presence or absence of these files depends on the package and the features being used. Do not copy similarly named files from a different release.

- Close the player.
- Copy
out_sqr.iniand any SqrSoft preset files to a backup folder. - Uninstall or remove the damaged plug-in.
- Reinstall the complete package.
- Restore configuration files only if they belong to the same installation and version family.
- Start the player and test with default settings first.
If out_sqr.dll is present but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, investigate dependencies and security blocking rather than copying the DLL again.
Fix 7: Repair or reinstall the audio player
If the plug-in directory contains partial files, repair the host application.
- Close the player.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Winamp, WACUP, MediaMonkey, or the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall or Modify, depending on what the program provides.
- Use its repair option if available.
- Otherwise uninstall it, restart Windows, and install a fresh copy from the publisher’s trusted installer.
- Reinstall SqrSoft after the base player starts successfully.
Do not add the SqrSoft plug-in until the base player launches normally. This separates a player problem from a plug-in problem.
Fix 8: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. out_sqr.dll is an audio output plug-in discovered by the player, not a normal registered Windows component.

It may produce an error about a missing entry point and can distract from the actual issue. Put the plug-in in the correct player directory and enable it through the player’s output settings instead.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
- Test the standard player output before re-enabling SqrSoft.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the computer or audio-device manufacturer’s support page. Reinstalling the media player remains the definitive fix for a missing out_sqr.dll.
Fix 10: Use SFC and DISM only for broader Windows problems
Because out_sqr.dll is not a protected Windows file, System File Checker and DISM will not normally restore it. Use them only when other Windows components are also failing.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the media player again.
Microsoft documents DISM repair procedures and System File Checker for repairing the Windows image and protected system files.

If SFC reports that it repaired files but the player still cannot load SqrSoft, return to the player’s Plugins folder and reinstall the application package.
Remove the plug-in instead of repairing it
If you no longer use crossfading, removing the plug-in may be the cleanest solution.
- Open the player’s output settings.
- Select the standard output plug-in.
- Close the player.
- Use the SqrSoft uninstaller if one exists.
- If there is no uninstaller, back up
out_sqr.iniand presets. - Remove or rename
out_sqr.dll. - Remove or rename
gen_acf.dllif it is also causing crashes. - Start the player and confirm that ordinary playback works.
Do not remove files from System32 or SysWOW64 in an attempt to clean up this plug-in. The correct files are in the media player’s own installation directory.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download out_sqr.dll by itself?
Avoid isolated DLL downloads from unknown sites. They may contain malware, the wrong release, the wrong architecture, or no required companion files. Use the original SqrSoft package, a trusted copy of the player installer, or a backup from a matching installation.

Is out_sqr.dll a Windows 11 or Windows 10 file?
No. It is a legacy SqrSoft audio plug-in used by Winamp-compatible players.

Will SFC restore the file?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while out_sqr.dll belongs to SqrSoft. Reinstall the media player or the complete SqrSoft package.
What if the error started after moving a portable installation?
Check the moved player’s own Plugins directory and confirm that its shortcut points to the intended executable. A plug-in left behind in the old folder will not be found by the new installation.
What if I still cannot identify the cause?
Rename out_sqr.dll and gen_acf.dll temporarily, confirm that the base player starts, then reinstall the complete package into the active Plugins folder. If the player works without SqrSoft, use its standard output plug-in or leave SqrSoft disabled.
