outlrpc.dll is an Outlook file, not a general Windows DLL. If outlrpc.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, first confirm:
- The failing program is Microsoft Outlook or an Office installation that includes Outlook.
- The error appeared after an Office update, Windows update, repair, uninstall, or failed installation.
- Your Office installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The file is located inside the Office installation folder, not randomly copied into
C:WindowsSystem32. - Antivirus history does not show that the file was quarantined.
The safest repair is to repair the installed Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office product. Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL from a random website.

What outlrpc.dll is
outlrpc.dll is a genuine Microsoft Outlook component. Its internal description is Outlook RPC, its product is Microsoft Outlook, and its publisher is Microsoft Corporation. A documented Office installation places the file in a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootOffice16OUTLRPC.DLL
That example does not define one universal location. Office architecture, installation technology, product generation, and update channel can change the folder. Some installations use Program Files; others use Program Files (x86).

The file is not normally a protected Windows component in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. It also should not be treated as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or game runtime.
The name can be confusing. In this file, “RPC” refers to an Outlook component. It does not automatically mean that you have an Exchange RPC network or certificate problem. A connectivity error involving Outlook RPC over HTTP is a separate issue from a missing Office DLL.
Error messages you may see
Outlook or Windows may display one of these messages:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- “The required file OUTLRPC.dll cannot be found in your path. Install Microsoft Outlook again.”
- “The program can’t start because outlrpc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because outlrpc.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading outlrpc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “outlrpc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not always mean the file has been deleted. Windows may report a DLL as missing when a dependency cannot load, an Office manifest is inconsistent, or Outlook is pointing to a damaged installation.
Fix 1: Run Quick Repair, then Online Repair
Office Repair is the correct first fix because it restores the installation as a matched set instead of replacing one file in isolation.
Run Quick Repair
- Close Outlook and every other Office application.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the specific Office product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows displays one.
- Select Quick Repair.
- Select Repair and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook.
If Outlook starts normally, open it several times and test the account before assuming the problem is resolved. A successful launch means the repaired Office files are loading, but it is still worth checking for a pending Office update.
Use Online Repair when Quick Repair fails
If the error remains, repeat the same steps and choose Online Repair instead. Microsoft describes Online Repair as the more complete repair option because it can replace more of the Office installation.
Online Repair may take longer and may require an internet connection. It can also reset parts of the Office installation, so save work and close Office first.
Use Microsoft’s official Office repair instructions if the menu names differ on your installation.
After the repair:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Outlook from the Start menu.
- If Outlook starts, select File > Office Account.
- Check that the product is activated.
- Select Update Options > Update Now if that option is available.
- Restart Outlook again.
If Online Repair completes but the same error returns, continue with a complete removal and reinstall rather than copying outlrpc.dll manually.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the exact Office product
A failed update or partial uninstall can leave Outlook with a damaged installation. Repair may not be enough when manifests, services, registration data, or multiple Office components are inconsistent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Try the normal uninstall first
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the exact Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If the Office entry is missing, the uninstall stops, or Outlook remains after removal, use Microsoft’s Office uninstall troubleshooter. Follow its prompts, restart when instructed, and do not interrupt the cleanup.

Reinstall from an official source
After Office is removed:
- Open a browser.
- Go to Microsoft’s official Office installation page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the license, or use the organization’s approved deployment portal.
- Select Install apps or the equivalent Office installation option.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Allow the installation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch Outlook.
Install the same Office product and installation type that was previously in use. Microsoft 365 Click-to-Run, MSI-based Office, Microsoft Store Office, volume-license Office, and preinstalled Office can follow different deployment paths.
Do not install a similarly named standalone product just because it includes Outlook. The goal is to restore the Office suite that owns the broken Outlook installation.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit Office architecture
Office exists in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The folder name can provide a clue:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
C:Program Files...commonly indicates 64-bit Office.C:Program Files (x86)...commonly indicates 32-bit Office.
This is a clue, not a complete identification method. Confirm the architecture inside an Office application when possible:
- Open Word or another Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select About Word, About Excel, or the equivalent link.
- Read the 32-bit or 64-bit label in the dialog.
If Outlook alone will not open, use another installed Office application. If no Office application starts, check the product details in Settings > Apps > Installed apps or use your organization’s deployment records.
Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit Office components. Microsoft states that switching architecture requires removing the existing bitness and reinstalling the desired one. During reinstall, use the same architecture as the existing deployment unless you have a deliberate compatibility reason to change it.
An architecture mismatch can also occur after a partial uninstall, an interrupted update, or an attempted installation over an existing Office build. A complete removal followed by a clean installation is safer than replacing one DLL.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a file, block access to it, or prevent Outlook from loading a dependency. This is a conditional possibility, not proof that outlrpc.dll is commonly a false positive.
- Open your antivirus or endpoint security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, History, or a similarly named section.
- Search for
OUTLRPC.DLLand recent Outlook or Office events. - Check the original path and detection details.
- Do not restore the file if the path or signature is suspicious.
- If it is clearly part of the trusted Office installation, restore it only according to your security policy.
- Run Office Repair immediately afterward so Microsoft restores a consistent copy.
- Restart Windows and test Outlook.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection. If the file is quarantined again, record the detection name, file path, timestamp, and Office product details. On a managed computer, send that information to the administrator rather than creating a broad exclusion.
Fix 5: Install pending Windows and Office updates
If the problem began immediately after an update, first complete all pending updates. An interrupted update can leave applications and servicing components in an inconsistent state.
Update Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart when prompted.
- Check again until Windows reports that no further updates are ready.
- Test Outlook.
Update Office
If an Office application opens:
- Open Word or Excel.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options.
- Select Update Now.
- Wait for the update to finish.
- Restart Outlook.
If an organization manages Office updates, do not force a different build or channel without approval. A deployment policy may reinstall, roll back, or quarantine files after every local repair.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 6: Repair broader Windows component corruption
outlrpc.dll belongs to Office, so System File Checker is not normally the direct repair tool for this file. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself shows broader corruption, Windows Update is failing, installers cannot run, or Office repair fails because Windows servicing is damaged.

- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair again.
- Test Outlook.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Use Microsoft’s DISM and System File Checker guidance if either command reports an error.
If you keep repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows what it identifies; the repair is performed by the full version, and it is not required for this Outlook-specific fix.
SFC and DISM do not replace Office Repair. If their scans complete successfully but Outlook still reports outlrpc.dll, repair or reinstall Office.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Fix 7: Address drivers only when there is a wider Windows problem
A display, storage, chipset, or security driver is not the normal source of an isolated outlrpc.dll error. Check drivers only if Windows is also crashing, devices are failing, Office installers are freezing, or Device Manager reports a problem.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test Outlook again.
For a driver supplied by the computer manufacturer, use the manufacturer’s official support channel. Do not replace Office files to compensate for an unrelated driver problem.
If manually checking every device and driver version is taking longer than the Office repair itself, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; the driver installation is performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for outlrpc.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide a registration function such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose DLL repair command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The available export information for a catalogued OUTLRPC.DLL lists Outlook and MAPI-related functions but does not list DllRegisterServer. That means there is no evidence that registering this file is an appropriate repair.
Do not use this as a routine solution:
regsvr32 outlrpc.dll
It may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found, or it may create a second misleading problem. Repair the Office installation instead.
Do not copy the DLL manually
A copied file may be the wrong:
- Office generation
- build
- architecture
- language
- installation technology
- dependency set
It can also leave damaged manifests and registration data untouched. The file visibly existing in an Office folder does not prove that Outlook can load it. A dependent module, path entry, permissions problem, or damaged Click-to-Run installation can produce the same message.
Never copy outlrpc.dll into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or an application folder based on a forum instruction.
If Outlook still closes after repair
If Office Repair succeeds but Outlook opens and immediately closes, the remaining problem may be an add-in, profile, or Outlook configuration issue rather than the DLL itself.
Test Outlook in safe mode
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
outlook.exe /safe
- Press Enter.
If Outlook remains open in safe mode:
- Select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins.
- Select Go.
- Clear recently installed or suspicious add-ins.
- Restart Outlook normally.
Safe mode disables add-ins. It does not prove that outlrpc.dll is defective.
Create a new Outlook profile
If safe mode does not help, create a test profile through Control Panel:

- Select Add.
- Create a new profile and add the account.
- Select Prompt for a profile to be used or make the new profile the default.
- Start Outlook.
If the new profile works, the original profile or its settings may be damaged. This does not mean the Office DLL was the cause.
When to use System Restore
Use System Restore only when:
- The problem clearly began after a recent software or Windows change.
- A suitable restore point exists.
- Office Repair and reinstall are unsuitable or have not addressed the change.
- You understand that applications and drivers installed after the restore point may be removed.
To open it:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore is not the primary solution for an isolated missing Office DLL. If the problem returns after Office updates, repair the deployment or investigate the update and security policy instead.
For administrators with multiple affected computers
When several users report the same error, do not copy a working DLL from one computer to another. Collect:
- Office product and build
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Click-to-Run, MSI, Store, volume-license, or other installation type
- Update channel and deployment configuration
- Full error text
- First failure time
- Office repair results
- Antivirus or endpoint-security events
- Click-to-Run and Windows event logs
Check whether the deployment tool is rolling back updates or whether endpoint security is quarantining the file. Repairing one workstation may be temporary if the same policy immediately removes or replaces the Office component.
For persistent failures, use Microsoft’s Office installation troubleshooting guidance and escalate with the collected logs.

Should I download outlrpc.dll separately?
No. Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong Office build, the wrong architecture, or an incomplete dependency set. Repair or reinstall Office from Microsoft instead.
Is outlrpc.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is an Outlook component maintained as part of Microsoft Office. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does it ship with every Outlook release?
Do not assume that. Office generations and builds differ, and the file’s path, version, size, and architecture can vary. Restore the copy belonging to the installed Office product.
Will regsvr32 outlrpc.dll fix Outlook?
There is no evidence that this file supports the registration function required by regsvr32. Use Office Repair instead.
Could a game require this DLL?
Claims that unrelated games or installers require outlrpc.dll are unverified unless that application’s vendor documents the dependency. The file is identified as part of Microsoft Outlook.
Should I run Windows Features?
Windows Features is not the normal repair location for an Office DLL. Do not enable or disable .NET Framework, Media components, or other Windows features as a substitute for repairing Office unless another application has specifically documented that requirement.
What if the file is visible but Outlook still says it is missing?
A dependency, manifest, path, architecture mismatch, security block, or damaged Office registration can produce that result. Use Online Repair, then remove and reinstall the exact Office installation if necessary.
What if this began after a Windows update?
Finish Windows Update, restart, and run Office Repair. Use System Restore only when the timing is clear, a suitable restore point exists, and repair or reinstall is not appropriate.
Is an RPC connection error the same as a missing outlrpc.dll error?
No. Outlook RPC connectivity and certificate errors concern communication with a mail server. A missing or unloadable outlrpc.dll error concerns the local Office installation. Diagnose them separately.
