In February 2025, fans reportedly spotted a sword-wielding knight doodle on a screen during an Overwatch Spotlight presentation and wondered whether it hinted at a future hero. Blizzard later identified Hero 45 as Vendetta, a melee-focused damage hero—but the available reporting does not establish that the doodle was an intentional teaser.
What was the potential Hero 45 teaser?
A February 15, 2025 report said viewers noticed a cartoonish knight doodle on a background viewscreen while senior narrative designer Jude Stacey introduced Freja during the Overwatch Spotlight. The drawing was described as having spiked armor, a large ponytail and an oversized sword. It was a background image, not an official character reveal.
Fans speculated that the design might point to a gladiator connected with Colosseo, with Magnus among the possibilities. Those were fan interpretations of the image, not confirmed Overwatch story details. The report also attributed a comment to game director Aaron Keller that developers were “definitely looking at” melee heroes, while noting the challenges of designing for a first-person game. The report did not provide a primary transcript for that comment, and it did not establish a connection between Keller’s remarks and the doodle. February 15, 2025 report
Who is Overwatch Hero 45?
Blizzard later identified Hero 45 as Vendetta, a damage hero built around close-range sword combat. In its November 21, 2025 retrospective, Blizzard described her sword as “approximately the size of two Torbjörns” and said the team favored a strongly melee-oriented design, drawing inspiration from fiction featuring heroes with massive weapons. Why did some fans expect a different kind of hero?
Some players expected Hero 45 to be a tank based on the pattern of recent releases, according to a November 20, 2025 PC Gamer interview report. Senior character artist Bryan Bedford said he had seen “very confident expectations” that the hero would be a tank, adding that the release pattern was changing. Associate game director Alec Dawson said choosing Vendetta was “more about servicing that playstyle that we really didn’t have in the roster.” These comments describe the team’s reasoning as reported by PC Gamer; they do not confirm anything about the earlier doodle. Is Hero 45 still an upcoming mystery?
No. Vendetta is the answer to the Hero 45 question. Blizzard’s September 2026 announcement identifies Doctrine as Hero 54 and says a clue for Hero 55 points toward 2027, placing the old speculation in historical context rather than leaving Hero 45 unrevealed. Blizzard’s September 2026 announcement
