How Hero Progression 2.0 works
Blizzard describes Hero Progression 2.0 as a streamlined redesign intended to make advancement easier to follow and more rewarding. The Overwatch team said development had been underway for about six months when it announced the system; the announcement does not establish a calendar year for that figure. - Progress is tracked separately for each Hero.
- Playing that Hero advances their level in any mode except Custom Games.
- Ascended borders are awarded at Hero levels 20, 40, and 60.
- Once earned, a border appears automatically when you play that Hero in a match.
The border becomes more elaborate as the Hero progresses. Blizzard describes the level 60 version as culminating in fiery visual effects.
Ascended border and Loot Box milestones
The border milestones are separate from the Loot Box milestones. Blizzard’s announcement lists the following rewards:

These are the milestones listed in Blizzard’s announcement; it does not provide a complete reward table for every level.
When other players can see your border
The border is designed to show your progress when you play the associated Hero, but it is not displayed to opponents during pre-match team selection. Blizzard says opponents will not see player cards or Ascended borders until well after a Competitive match has begun. Blizzard’s visibility details

What changed from the earlier progression system
The earlier player progression system tracked statistics and time across Heroes, roles, and game modes. Badges and sub-badges represented that activity, and leveling them contributed to player progression levels and rewards. Hero Progression 2.0 puts the emphasis on distinct levels for each Hero and gives those levels a visible in-match reward: the Ascended border.
That contrast describes the focus of the redesign, not a full feature-by-feature migration. Blizzard’s announcement does not establish a comprehensive table of which earlier tracking elements were removed, retained, or changed.

Is this a new overhaul of every progression system?
No. Hero Progression 2.0 is a redesign of Hero-by-Hero progression. In later Season 18 commentary, Blizzard described its approach to progression rewards as gradual additions rather than a plan to overhaul every large progression system. The Overwatch team said: “Rather than overhaul big systems like progression, we’re looking to build gradually by adding more ways for you to earn cool stuff, chase your chosen goals, and feel rewarded for your time.” Blizzard’s Season 18 Director’s Take
