Blizzard’s 2025 Overwatch 2 Spotlight laid out a roadmap for the opening seasons of the year: hero-specific Perks, the new Stadium mode, two upcoming heroes, competitive changes, returning loot boxes, and a slate of cosmetics. The event recap was published on February 12, 2025; its season dates and feature details below are what Blizzard announced then, not confirmation of what is live now.
Blizzard’s official Spotlight recap focused on plans for Overwatch 2’s first several seasons of 2025. Here is what the company revealed, organized by feature and season.
What were the headline announcements?
- Perks: hero upgrades planned for Quick Play and Competitive in Season 15.
- Stadium: a best-of-seven mode with purchasable hero modifications, planned for Season 16.
- New heroes: Freja for Season 16 and Hero 44, then codenamed Aqua, for Season 18.
- Competitive updates: a ranked reset, a 6v6 competitive queue, Overwatch Classic: GOATS, and new rank rewards.
- Other reveals: returning loot boxes, planned Hero Bans and Map Voting, new Mythic cosmetics, and a returning LE SSERAFIM collaboration.
What were Perks?
Blizzard planned Perks for Season 15, announced to begin February 18, 2025. In Quick Play and Competitive, players would level their hero twice during a match and choose an upgrade each time: first a minor improvement, then a more substantial change to the hero’s capabilities.
Blizzard’s Torbjörn examples illustrated the range: restore armor with his Forge Hammer, reload Rivet Gun ammunition while Overload is active, anchor his turret to walls or ceilings, or choose a more powerful level-three turret. The system was presented as hero-specific choices within a match, rather than a single upgrade shared by the roster.

How was Stadium supposed to work?
Blizzard described Stadium as its biggest mode to date and planned it for Season 16 in April 2025. The announced format was a best-of-seven, with players earning Stadium coins each round to purchase modifications for their hero. Those upgrades could change damage, survivability, or abilities. Players would also be able to choose first- or third-person view.
Blizzard said at least 14 core heroes would be included at launch. That figure and the other details here describe the Spotlight preview; the recap does not establish the mode’s present-day roster or operation.

Which heroes did Blizzard reveal?
Freja: a bounty hunter with an explosive crossbow
Blizzard introduced Freja as a former search-and-rescue operative who became a bounty hunter. Her announced kit used an explosive crossbow, including a rapid-fire mode and an aimed explosive bolt. The preview also described a directional dash that reloads the bolt, an updraft, and an explosive Bola Shot. Freja was planned to join in Season 16, with a free trial weekend later in Season 15.
Hero 44, codenamed Aqua
The event previewed Hero 44, then codenamed Aqua, as a Chinese hero with water-based abilities, planned for Season 18. Aqua was the working codename used in the announcement, not a confirmation of the hero’s eventual release name.
