Its first run was scheduled for November 12 to December 2, 2024—not an upcoming event—and Blizzard described Classic as a series of historical, temporary experiences rather than a permanent return to the original game.
What was Overwatch: Classic?
Blizzard announced Overwatch: Classic as a way to revisit earlier moments in Overwatch’s history. The first event returned players to the May 2016 launch version, Patch 1.0, with the abilities, hero balance, and less-restricted team compositions associated with that period. Blizzard said later events could explore other points in the game’s history, so the first event’s exact content should not be assumed to define every future Classic event.
Blizzard’s announcement framed the mode as a nostalgic limited-time experience, not a replacement for the current game.
What did the first Classic event include?
Launch heroes, maps, and modes
The first event featured Overwatch’s original 21 heroes and twelve launch maps across the four original map modes:

- Assault: Attackers tried to capture two objectives.
- Escort: Attackers moved a payload along its route.
- Hybrid: Teams captured an objective before escorting a payload.
- Control: Teams fought over an objective in a best-of-three format.
The return to Patch 1.0 also meant abilities and tuning that had changed or disappeared in later versions. Blizzard highlighted examples including Hanzo’s Scatter Arrow, Mercy’s team-resurrection ultimate, Mei’s ability to freeze enemies, and Torbjörn’s upgradeable turret.
Six-player teams and changing hero limits
Classic used 6v6 team play. For the first few days, players could select duplicate heroes, with no hero or role limits. Blizzard’s contemporaneous schedule specified that no-limit compositions ran November 12–14, 2024; a single-hero limit applied from November 15 through December 2. The rules therefore changed during the event rather than remaining unrestricted throughout.

Was Overwatch: Classic a separate game?
No. Blizzard said Classic was a mode playable within Overwatch 2, not a separate game or installation. Its FAQ directed players to the Events Hub or Arcade in the main menu. The parent game was called Overwatch 2 in Blizzard’s announcement, while the event itself was named Overwatch: Classic.
When did the event run?
The first event was scheduled for November 12 through December 2, 2024. Blizzard’s Season 13 midseason update described it as a special three-week event beginning November 12. Those dates refer to the 2024 run; they are not a current or forthcoming schedule.

Was Classic a permanent 6v6 mode?
No permanent restoration was announced. Blizzard’s FAQ distinguished Overwatch: Classic from its broader 6v6 plans: Classic was intended as a limited-time return to historical versions of the game, while separate 6v6 test modes were intended to gather player feedback and gauge interest. Blizzard also said it would use responses to inform future plans, but did not promise that Classic would return or become a permanent mode.

The official announcements establish the original event dates and Blizzard’s plans at the time, but do not establish whether Classic is currently playable or whether another run has been scheduled. Check the Overwatch 2 Events Hub or Arcade for current in-game availability; no later return date is confirmed by the cited announcements.
