Blizzard scheduled its first run for November 12 through December 2, 2024, and that event has ended. The mode brought back the original hero roster and abilities, but it was not a complete restoration of every 2016 feature or map. Blizzard’s available announcements do not confirm whether Classic is playable now or when it might return.
What Overwatch: Classic brought back
Blizzard presented Classic as a return to Overwatch’s original patch 1.0, released in May 2016. At launch, the game had 21 heroes and 12 maps across four game modes. The event revisited that launch-era roster and gameplay, including abilities that had changed or disappeared in later versions. Blizzard’s examples included Cassidy’s Flashbang, D.Va’s original Defense Matrix, and Mercy’s mass-resurrection ultimate. Blizzard’s event announcement describes the intended return to the original experience; it does not claim that every historical detail of the 2016 client was restored.

Matches used the original 6v6 team size: six players on each team. Heroes had their default original Overwatch skins. The event was available through Overwatch 2’s Events Hub and Arcade, not as a separately installed or purchased game.
How the event’s team rules changed
Classic did not use the same hero-selection rule throughout its run. Blizzard’s Season 13 schedule set the initial no-limit period for November 12–14, 2024. From November 15 until the event ended on December 2, players could not have duplicate picks of the same hero on a team. Blizzard’s Season 13 schedule gives those dates and rules.

Classic was not a perfect 2016 restoration
The event brought back launch-era heroes and gameplay, but some parts of the experience remained those of Overwatch 2. Blizzard’s event FAQ said the maps appeared as they did in Overwatch 2, including major reworks. The mode also did not include the original user interface, loot boxes, or Competitive mode. It is therefore more accurate to describe Classic as a limited-time return to patch 1.0 gameplay than as the original Overwatch client rebuilt in full. Blizzard’s FAQ and event details explain these distinctions.
How Classic differed from Blizzard’s separate 6v6 tests
Classic was a nostalgia event built around the original game’s launch-era rules. Blizzard separately discussed testing new 6v6 formats; those were balance experiments, not the same mode or a continuation of the Classic event.

| Overwatch: Classic | Revisits launch-era heroes and gameplay in 6v6; hero limits changed during the event. | A limited-time Overwatch 2 event scheduled for November 12–December 2, 2024. |
| “Min 1, Max 3” test | At least one player in each role and no more than three players in any role. | A planned format described in Blizzard’s separate 6v6 discussion, not proof of current availability. |
| 2-2-2 test | Two players per role, with some Overwatch 2 principles such as reduced crowd control and hero reworks. | A later planned test described by Blizzard, not the Classic event. |
Blizzard’s Director’s Take on 6v6 and 5v5 outlined the planned tests. Because these were historical plans, they should not be read as confirmation that either test is currently available.
Why Blizzard discussed both 5v5 and 6v6
In the same design discussion, game director Aaron Keller described trade-offs rather than declaring one format universally better. Blizzard attributed shorter queues and less visual complexity to 5v5. It also acknowledged what 6v6 can offer: more tank synergy, more room for an individual player’s mistakes, and the chaotic team fights associated with twelve players in a match. Keller wrote, “There were moments and madness that could happen with twelve players in a match that just don’t quite coalesce when there are ten.” He immediately added: “Correction, it was too much to keep track of at times, but that was part of the charm!”

Blizzard also warned that a return to 6v6 could bring longer queues because fewer players queued for tank. These are Blizzard’s stated design rationale and forecasts, not independent measurements of what all players prefer. The cited announcements do not establish a player consensus or show that the Classic event proved broad support for permanent 6v6.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Overwatch: Classic available now, or coming back?
The announced 2024 run ended on December 2. Blizzard’s event FAQ asked, “Will Overwatch: Classic ever return?” and said the team was not planning for it to be a single occurrence, while noting that player response would inform future plans. That statement expresses an intention to consider future events; it is not a promise of a return. The available official announcements do not establish current availability or provide a confirmed date for another run. Blizzard’s FAQ is the source for its stated plans at the time.
