To boost FPS in Overwatch, first identify whether the problem is low rendering performance, stutter, delayed input, or network lag. Then change one setting at a time and compare the result. Lowering graphics quality can help when the GPU is the limit, but it may not improve a CPU-limited system—and it reduces visual quality.
Diagnose the problem before changing settings
Low average FPS, sudden FPS drops, uneven frame pacing (stutter), delayed controls, and network lag can feel similar, but they have different causes. Graphics adjustments target rendering performance; they do not fix a poor connection. Blizzard’s PC performance guide is useful for its diagnostic approach, though its age means its hardware figures and settings should not be treated as current recommendations.
Start by recording your PC hardware, the resolution you play at, your monitor’s refresh rate, and the current in-game settings. Use Overwatch’s performance information to observe frame rate and stability before and after each change. Compare under similar conditions—such as the same game mode and visual settings—so that normal variation does not look like an improvement.
How to reduce FPS drops and improve rendering performance
Test graphics settings one at a time
- Record your current settings and observe the game’s performance information during play.
- Lower one graphics-quality setting or reduce rendering demand.
- Play under comparable conditions and check whether FPS or stability improves.
- Keep the change only if the improvement is useful and the image quality remains acceptable; otherwise restore it and test a different setting.
Blizzard’s performance guide explains the relationship between graphics options and performance, but it does not establish a best preset for every current PC. A graphics reduction is most relevant when GPU rendering is the constraint. If the CPU is limiting performance, lowering visual quality may make little difference.

Choose a frame-rate cap with your monitor in mind
FPS and input latency are related but distinct: a higher frame rate is not, by itself, a guarantee of lower input delay. In developer guidance from the Overwatch 2 launch period, Blizzard suggested matching the frame-rate cap to the monitor’s maximum frame rate. Treat that as a starting point to test on your own system, not a universal guarantee of smoother play or better responsiveness. See Blizzard’s developer guidance.
Consider NVIDIA Reflex + Boost for responsiveness
Blizzard’s developer guidance recommended NVIDIA Reflex + Boost for players with NVIDIA graphics cards who want more responsive input. This is guidance about responsiveness, not a promise of higher average FPS. Test it against your current setup and judge the result by how controls feel as well as by frame-rate stability.

Check drivers, graphics adapter, and background workloads
- Update graphics drivers: Blizzard advises using up-to-date graphics drivers in its DirectX 12 beta announcement.
- Confirm the intended graphics adapter is in use: This matters on systems with more than one graphics adapter. Blizzard’s performance guide includes system-level troubleshooting.
- Close unnecessary workloads: Retest after closing applications or tasks that are not needed while playing, changing one factor at a time.
- Check for game updates: If the problem began after a patch or persists across settings tests, check current updates and support guidance. Blizzard’s support forum discussion covers low-FPS troubleshooting, but no single step is established as a fix for every PC.
Should you switch to DirectX 12?
Do not switch APIs simply because you want more FPS. Blizzard described DirectX 12 as a beta and said it has higher hardware requirements than DirectX 11; the announcement also recommends current graphics drivers. Check the current game options and patch notes before trying it, then compare frame-rate stability, visual clarity, responsiveness, and whether your hardware supports the option. The beta announcement does not establish that DirectX 12 will outperform DirectX 11 on every system.

Consider a GPU upgrade only after testing indicates that graphics rendering is the bottleneck and the performance target matters at your chosen resolution and refresh rate. Before buying, check the card’s compatibility with your system and its power requirements, then compare independent, current benchmarks for the games and resolution you care about. The available guidance does not support naming a current card or promising a particular FPS increase. If testing instead points to a CPU limit, buying a graphics card may not solve the problem.
