A crash or black screen does not have one universal fix because several different projects are commonly called a “P.T. PC port.” First identify whether you installed the current native C++ port with its Vulkan renderer or an older Unreal Engine fan recreation. Then match the installed version and exact symptom, verify the supported operating system, Vulkan 1.3 capability and game-data format, and collect the correct log before changing settings. The current port’s documented 1.0.1 startup fix applies specifically to DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen; it does not claim to resolve every black screen.
First, identify which P.T. PC project you installed
The most important troubleshooting step is determining which executable is failing. The current project describes itself in the P.T. PC Port README as “This is a native PC port of P.T., the 2014 PS4 teaser by Kojima Productions.” It is a native C++ implementation with a Vulkan renderer, not an Unreal Engine remake. Older fan recreations were built with Unreal Engine and have different engine versions, settings locations, requirements and log formats.

Check the project name shown in its download archive, the folder in which you installed it and the executable you launch. If the documentation or launcher identifies an Unreal project, stop using the native port’s data/ paths and release notes; use that project’s own documentation instead. Applying a Vulkan-port fix to an Unreal recreation can hide the real cause rather than repair it.

Match the failure to the right branch
“Crashes,” “closes,” and “black screen” describe different points in the startup sequence. Note whether a window appears, whether audio plays, whether the application closes by itself, and whether the problem begins only after enabling a graphics option. This narrows the next check without assuming a cause.

Check the installed version and the release notes
Before deleting configuration files or reinstalling, open the project’s official releases page and identify your installed version. Compare the wording of your symptom with the note for the release you plan to use. This is more reliable than applying a fix because it appears in a forum post with a similar headline.
- Record the version shown by the launcher, executable or archive name. If no version is displayed, keep the original archive name and installation date in your notes.
- Read the release notes for a newer suitable build and look for a statement that matches the exact failure stage and graphics configuration.
- If your native port closes at startup while DLSS Frame Generation is enabled in borderless fullscreen, update to a release containing the 1.0.1 fix or a later release that retains it.
- While diagnosing that exact case, disable DLSS Frame Generation or select a non-borderless-fullscreen mode. This is a temporary test, not evidence that every black screen is caused by DLSS.
- Launch again and record whether the symptom changed. If it did not match the documented configuration, do not describe the result as confirmation of the 1.0.1 fix.
The release note does not claim to fix unrelated black screens, failures caused by invalid game data, unsupported Vulkan implementations or problems in Unreal Engine recreations. Keep those cases on their own troubleshooting branches.
Verify the supported operating system and Vulkan 1.3
The native port’s README lists these supported platform ranges:

Check the actual operating-system architecture and version, then identify the GPU model and installed driver. Confirm Vulkan 1.3 support for that specific GPU and driver rather than assuming that a recent-looking card or operating system is sufficient. If the driver is older than the vendor’s current release for your model, install the vendor-provided update and reboot before retesting. The requirement is capability-based: replacing hardware is not a first step when the current GPU and driver already provide Vulkan 1.3.

Optional ray-traced graphics features have additional capability requirements. If the application reaches its PC settings, turn those optional effects off for a controlled test. A successful launch with those effects disabled shows that the configuration changed the result; it does not by itself identify whether the limiting factor was Vulkan capability, driver behavior, memory pressure or another graphics interaction.
- Write down the GPU model, driver version, operating system and architecture.
- Compare the GPU/driver’s advertised Vulkan version with the project’s Vulkan 1.3 requirement.
- Retest with optional ray-traced or similarly demanding features disabled when they are accessible.
- Do not apply an Unreal Engine-specific GPU diagnosis to the native Vulkan port.
Confirm that the port has usable game data
The native port reads files from the player’s own copy of P.T.; it is not a complete licensed game-data distribution. The README says the project is built and tested with the US release identified as CUSA01127, supplied as a dump folder or a fake PKG. It also states that a retail-store PKG cannot be used because that package is encrypted for the console that owns it.
Use only game data you are entitled to use, and do not download or share copyrighted files as a troubleshooting step. A technically correct executable can still show a black screen or close during initialization if the selected source is the wrong release, an unsupported package type or an incomplete dump.
- Open the port’s data-selection or setup location and verify which source folder or package it is reading.
- Confirm that the source corresponds to the tested US release,
CUSA01127, when you are troubleshooting against the project’s documented test case. - Check that the dump folder or fake PKG is complete and that the required archive files are present where the port expects them.
- Remove ambiguity by recording the selected path and source type in your notes; do not repeatedly point the application at different folders without recording each change.
- Launch again and compare the new
pt.logwith the previous attempt so that a data-loading change can be distinguished from a graphics change.
A retail store PKG that is encrypted for its original console owner is not made usable by renaming it, moving it or reinstalling the PC executable. If your source is that package type, obtain guidance from the project documentation about supported formats rather than attempting to bypass its encryption.

Find the P.T. PC Port crash log and preserve evidence
The current README places settings, logs and crash dumps in the application’s data location. The path differs by operating system:

To answer “how do I find the P.T. PC Port crash log?”, close the application after reproducing the failure, then open the path for your operating system and sort by modification time. Copy the newest log and dump before launching again so a later attempt does not overwrite the evidence.
Include these details when asking for help:
- Native port version and the exact release you installed.
- Operating system version and architecture.
- GPU model and driver version.
- Whether the window appeared, whether audio played, and when it closed or turned black.
- Display mode, resolution and graphics options, especially DLSS Frame Generation, borderless fullscreen and optional ray-traced features.
- Game-data source type, tested release identifier when applicable, and the selected path.
- The complete latest
pt.logand crash dump, with personal paths or other sensitive details removed only when doing so does not obscure the error.
A log line is evidence to interpret, not automatic proof of a cause. For example, a graphics initialization message may be a consequence of an earlier data-loading failure. Preserve the surrounding lines and the launch settings that produced them.
Use cautious graphics triage for general GPU symptoms
Epic Games’ guide on dealing with a GPU crash when using Unreal Engine lists several possible sources of GPU failures, including content or engine defects, drivers, hardware, VRAM exhaustion and other applications. That guidance is written for Unreal Engine. It is not a diagnosis of this native Vulkan port, but its broad troubleshooting checks can be used cautiously as general graphics triage.

- Inspect the native port’s log and crash dump first, looking for a repeatable graphics-initialization, data-loading or platform error.
- Check the GPU vendor’s current driver for your exact model and operating system. Record the old version before updating so the change is reversible in your notes.
- Close other graphics-intensive applications, overlays or capture programs for one controlled launch. Do not change several unrelated variables at once.
- If you can reach the PC settings, disable optional visual features and retest. Keep the setting change recorded.
- Repeat the launch with the same data source and display mode. A failure that occurs at the same step with the same log pattern is more useful than a one-off result.
These checks do not establish that your GPU is defective, that VRAM is exhausted or that a driver is responsible. They simply separate common categories before escalation. No user crash rate or measured success rate is established in the project documentation, so claims such as “this fixes most black screens” would be unsupported.

Windows
Confirm that the system is Windows 10 or 11 x64, verify Vulkan 1.3 support, and inspect data/ beside the executable. If the application closes at startup with DLSS Frame Generation and borderless fullscreen, apply the version-specific release check before changing other settings. For any other failure, preserve pt.log and the crash dump after one reproducible launch.
Linux
Confirm x86-64 and glibc 2.38 or newer, then verify Vulkan 1.3 through the installed GPU driver. The project’s issue tracker lists a Linux startup report, but the listing alone does not establish a general Linux fix or identify one responsible distribution, driver or hardware model. Use data/ beside the executable for logs and include your distribution, kernel, GPU, driver and glibc details when reporting an unresolved case.
macOS
Confirm macOS 14 or newer and use ~/Library/Application Support/pt-port/pt/ for settings, logs and crash dumps. Record whether the application is running through the project’s supported configuration and preserve the same launch details as on other platforms. Do not substitute Windows/Linux relative paths when looking for the macOS log.

When to escalate to the project issue tracker
Escalate after you have identified the project, recorded the version, checked the stated platform and Vulkan requirements, verified the game-data format and captured a reproducible log. Open the project’s Issues page and search for an existing report with the same operating system, symptom and configuration before opening a new one.
A useful report separates observations from conclusions. State “the window opens, remains black for 20 seconds and closes” rather than “the Vulkan driver is broken” unless the log supports that conclusion. Include:
- Exact port version and download/release identifier.
- Operating system, architecture, distribution or macOS version where relevant.
- GPU model, driver version and Vulkan capability.
- Game-data release identifier and whether the source is a dump folder or fake PKG.
- Display mode and graphics options, including DLSS Frame Generation, borderless fullscreen and ray-traced features.
- Steps that reproduce the failure and whether disabling one option changes it.
- Relevant log excerpt, the full
pt.logand crash dump attached according to the tracker’s rules.
Do not claim that a Linux report, a driver update or a particular GPU model is the general answer unless a current issue or release entry explicitly supports that conclusion.

Use these five questions in order, because each one rules out a different class of unrelated fixes:
- Which project and engine? Native C++/Vulkan port, Unreal recreation or unidentified project?
- Does the machine meet the stated requirements? Supported operating system, architecture and GPU/driver Vulkan 1.3 capability?
- Does a release note match the exact symptom? In particular, startup closure with DLSS Frame Generation in borderless fullscreen?
- Where does the failure occur? Before a window, at a black screen, after a graphics option or during gameplay?
- What does the log repeat? A graphics-initialization message, data-loading error, platform error or no useful signal?
Only after those answers should you choose between updating the port, changing the matching graphics option, correcting the game-data source, updating the GPU driver, or reporting the case with evidence. This sequence prevents an Unreal-specific suggestion, a hardware purchase or a speculative setting change from being treated as a cure for a problem it was never designed to address.
What a successful diagnosis looks like
You have a defensible fix when the change is tied to the symptom and can be repeated: the documented 1.0.1 update stops the matching DLSS/borderless startup closure; a corrected supported data source removes a data-loading failure; or a graphics-option change consistently alters a graphics-related log and launch result. If the screen remains black after requirements, data, version and logs have been checked, the honest next step is an issue report with the complete machine and launch details—not a promise that one more generic tweak will work.
