Pacific Drive Review: A Brilliant New Kind of Survival Game?

Pacific Drive’s station wagon is transport, protection, and the focus of its survival loop. Its inventive upgrades and risky excursions come with resource-gathering and repair friction.

Pacific Drive makes survival feel different by making one battered station wagon the center of nearly every decision. You prepare it, drive into a supernatural danger zone, scavenge for supplies, and try to bring it home intact. That car-centered loop is inventive and often compelling—but time spent on foot gathering resources and managing repairs may be less appealing than the driving.

What is Pacific Drive?

Ironwood Studios describes Pacific Drive as a “run-based, first-person driving survival game.” From an abandoned garage, you venture into the Olympic Exclusion Zone, gather resources, and attempt to return safely. Each trip can help you improve both the station wagon and your garage for future runs. The Zone’s anomalies, radiation, unstable weather, and shifting routes make the car both your transport and your main protection. Ironwood’s official PlayStation Blog introduction and the PlayStation Store listing outline that premise.

The story gives the road trip a mystery-horror frame. In the game’s fiction, the U.S. government seized part of the Pacific Northwest in 1955 and sealed it after dangerous technologies and environmental disasters. That is an invented backstory, not a claim about real events.

How the car makes survival feel new

The station wagon is more than a vehicle to drive between objectives: it is your shelter, your upgrade platform, and the thing your scavenged resources are meant to keep running. Preparation turns each excursion into a set of trade-offs. An attachment or supply that helps against one hazard may cost space, fuel, or another useful tool.

  • Unravel the mystery of the Olympic Exclusion Zone, an abandoned research site in an anomaly-filled version of the Pacific Northwest
  • Original score by Wilbert Roget, II and featuring 15+ licensed songs

PC Gamer’s reviewer reported spending 35 hours with the game and praised the satisfaction of transforming an ordinary late-1980s wagon into a heavily equipped machine. That is one critic’s experience, not a recommended playtime or a guarantee that every player will enjoy the same progression. The strongest idea is the connection between maintenance and risk: upgrades answer dangers you encounter, while the next trip tests whether your choices were enough. PC Gamer’s review describes that progression and its loadout decisions.

The car also gives upkeep an emotional role. Ironwood’s official materials call it a lifeline and companion, and the review’s account helps explain why: repeated repairs and customizations make the wagon feel like a partner in the journey rather than disposable equipment. That bond is the clearest reason the game can feel like a fresh take on survival rather than simply another scavenging adventure.

Where the loop can become a chore

The same design creates friction. The PC Gamer reviewer found leaving the car to gather resources and make repairs less compelling than driving through the hostile Zone. If you want a survival game built around uninterrupted exploration or action, the stops for scavenging and upkeep may interrupt the part you enjoy most.

There are also settings for players who find the pressure too fiddly. The PlayStation Store listing says difficulty can be adjusted, including options to simplify or disable car quirks; its description also highlights exposed moments outside the vehicle. The store’s recommendation to adjust settings is guidance from that listing, not a guarantee that every source of friction disappears. Check the listing’s description for the available options.

Is Pacific Drive a brilliant new kind of survival game?

As a design idea, yes: the car makes preparation, resource management, danger, and progression reinforce one another in a way that gives the survival loop a distinct identity. The praise is not universal proof of brilliance, though. Whether it works for you depends on whether you enjoy maintaining a vehicle and making loadout decisions as much as you enjoy driving it through an eerie landscape.

Design director Seth Rosen described the emphasis in a GamesRadar+ interview: “The vast majority of what’s going on in Pacific Drive is time management or attentional management”. He also put the genre distinction this way: “I think of it much more as a car-maintenance adventure than a survival game,” he says. Those are Rosen’s descriptions of the design, not a consensus verdict. They capture what prospective players should weigh: this is a survival game whose tension often comes from keeping the car and its needs in mind, not only from confronting threats directly.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Consider it if you like planning supplies, improving equipment in response to hazards, and building an attachment to a vehicle through repeated trips.
  • Be cautious if resource gathering and repair breaks feel like busywork to you, or if you mainly want to stay behind the wheel.
  • Look at the difficulty options if car quirks or the management demands sound daunting; the PlayStation Store listing describes ways to adjust them.
