A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11If your stream is stuttering, first find out whether the problem is on the broadcaster’s side or a viewer’s side. In OBS, dropped frames mean the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; viewer buffering can happen even when the broadcaster’s dropped-frame count is zero. Diagnose those two symptoms separately, then test the network path, bitrate, local equipment and software in a controlled order.
Is it packet loss, dropped frames or viewer buffering?
These symptoms are related, but they do not identify the same failure. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate. That is an operational connection problem, not proof by itself that packet-level loss has been measured. OBS warns that excessive dropped frames can disconnect the broadcaster. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting
| What you observe | Where to start | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| OBS reports dropped frames | Broadcaster upload capacity, route to ingest, bitrate, local network and software | It does not by itself confirm packet loss or identify where the connection is failing. |
| Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames | Check whether it affects one viewer, several viewers, or all viewers; then compare devices, networks and streams | A clean broadcaster counter does not guarantee smooth playback for every viewer. |
| One viewer has trouble with several streams or sites | That viewer’s network, device, browser or player | It does not establish a problem with the broadcaster’s upload. |
| Many viewers have trouble with one stream | Broadcaster configuration, ingest or platform-side playback | It does not isolate the broadcaster’s home connection as the cause. |
OBS notes that viewers’ locations, internet connections and devices can produce different playback results. Twitch likewise says playback problems may be on the viewer’s side or tied to a particular broadcaster’s configuration. Ask affected viewers whether other streams and websites work, and whether the same issue occurs on another device or network. Fix broadcaster-side dropped frames in a useful order
- Record the symptom. Note the time, OBS dropped-frame count, configured bitrate, stream resolution and frame rate, and whether the trouble affects one platform or more. Ask a viewer on a separate connection whether playback is also affected.
- Check stable upload capacity, not just a headline speed-test result. A speed test to a nearby test server does not establish that the route to your streaming ingest is stable. Repeat a test at another server or service and see whether the symptom changes. If only one service or ingest is affected, the route to that destination may differ.
- Lower the outgoing bitrate to a level your connection can sustain. OBS gives about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal threshold. Use stable upload capacity, account for other devices and uploads sharing the connection, and stay within the platform’s limits. If drops stop after lowering bitrate, the connection may not reliably support the previous setting; the trade-off is reduced video quality.
- Test another ingest server or streaming service. A different ingest can help reveal a service- or route-specific issue. OBS notes that on Windows, TwitchTest can compare Twitch server quality scores. Changing services is diagnostic, not a fix for a bad route to the original service.
- Switch to wired Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi can be unstable under interference, distance or congestion. Test with a direct wired connection where practical, and inspect the cable and local connection before buying replacement hardware. A new Ethernet cable cannot fix ISP congestion, a remote routing issue or viewer-side Wi-Fi.
- Restart and inspect the local network. Restart the modem and router, check their connections, and test again. If the problem remains, isolate whether it follows the computer, router, connection or destination before replacing equipment; ask the ISP when the faulty component is uncertain.
- Check local software and drivers. VPNs, firewall or antivirus interference, bundled network-prioritization utilities and outdated network drivers can contribute. Update network drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. Test without a VPN if appropriate. If security software appears responsible, test its configuration carefully; restore protection and add an OBS exception only if the test confirms that is needed.
- Review OBS network options only as targeted tests. Keep Bind to IP at Default. OBS suggests trying IPv4 Only as a troubleshooting test; if it makes no difference, return to the default IPv4 and IPv6 setting. OBS also documents network optimizations and TCP pacing on Windows, and describes dynamic bitrate adjustment as a beta option in its guidance. Labels and availability can change by OBS version, so check your current version’s settings. Dynamic bitrate may reduce bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but it does not fix the underlying cause and can lower quality.
- Contact your ISP if local checks do not resolve it. Explain the times and duration of the problem, the affected streaming destination, OBS’s dropped-frame observations, tests on wired versus Wi-Fi, and whether other services are affected. Congestion or routing beyond your home may not be something you can correct in OBS.
Choose a bitrate and picture quality your viewers can receive
Broadcaster upload bitrate and viewer download speed are different sides of delivery. A broadcaster should choose bitrate based on stable upload capacity and platform limits; a viewer’s connection must be able to receive the selected playback quality. Twitch publishes these recommended viewing download-speed ranges. They are Twitch guidance, not broadcaster upload targets, packet-loss thresholds or guarantees of uninterrupted playback. Twitch notes that 1440p60 is not available everywhere. Twitch Playback Issue Troubleshooting

If multiple viewers buffer while the broadcaster is not dropping frames, lowering bitrate, resolution, quality or frame rate may help more people watch smoothly, particularly where the platform does not transcode the stream into alternative playback qualities. Lower resolution reduces image detail; lower frame rate reduces motion smoothness; lowering bitrate can introduce more compression. The right compromise depends on the audience’s connections and the platform’s transcoding availability. OBS Stream Buffering Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot a viewer’s buffering separately
- Refresh or restart the player, then try a different stream.
- Check whether other websites or streaming services also fail.
- Try another device or network to see whether the problem follows the viewer’s connection.
- If the issue is Twitch Error Code 2000, Twitch associates it with an internet-network problem and lists unstable connectivity, router or modem issues, and browser extensions among possible causes. The code alone does not prove packet loss.
When only one viewer or device is affected, the broadcaster should not assume changing encoder settings will solve that viewer’s problem. Conversely, if many viewers report the same stream while the broadcaster’s connection is stable, investigate stream configuration and platform delivery rather than treating every report as a home-upload failure. Can retransmission or error correction fix packet loss?
At the transport-protocol level, retransmission and forward error correction (FEC) can help recover media, but neither is a free repair. IETF RFC 8834 says WebRTC RTP senders are required to understand generic NACK feedback, though they may ignore some or all of it. Retransmission increases forward RTP bandwidth and can potentially worsen loss when congestion caused the original problem. FEC can protect against some packet loss, but adds steady bandwidth overhead. These are protocol-design considerations, not controls a creator can generally switch on in an ordinary Twitch or YouTube player setting. IETF RFC 8834
For broader context, RFC 2354 discusses repair options for streaming media subject to packet loss. RFC 9317 discusses operational factors affecting streaming, including delay variation associated with bufferbloat, Wi-Fi error correction and packet reordering. These documents do not establish one protocol or bitrate that is best for every creator’s network and platform.

What packet-loss level is acceptable?
There is no universal acceptable packet-loss percentage established by the cited OBS, Twitch and IETF guidance for every live stream. Nor do these sources establish a general statistic for how often streams experience packet loss. A single percentage would not explain whether the loss occurs on the home Wi-Fi link, ISP route, ingest connection or viewer’s network. Use the symptom, OBS’s sender-side dropped-frame counter and controlled route and network tests to locate the problem rather than treating an unmeasured packet-loss figure as a diagnosis.
