If padtsgknp.dll is missing or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the old game or PlayStation emulator that needs it and restore that program’s complete plugin folder.
Do not begin by downloading the DLL from a random website or copying it into C:WindowsSystem32. That can install the wrong architecture, leave the actual application incomplete, or expose Windows to a tampered file.

What padtsgknp.dll is
The file is identified in older software records as ASPI DLL, part of an ASPI Dynamic Link Library. Its strongest known association is with the PSEmu Pro and PlayStation-emulator plugin ecosystem, where controller plugins commonly appeared in an application folder named plugins.
A historical plugin directory lists padtsgknp.dll beside other controller-related files, including padNull.dll, padDIKeys.dll, and padSeguDIJoy.dll. The filename has also appeared in an old PC package containing PlayStation emulator plugins. That does not prove that one particular game created or published the DLL.

The available evidence points to a legacy Win32, or x86, file. A verified modern 64-bit build has not been established. The publisher is also not reliably identified. In practical terms, the parent application matters more than the DLL’s name.
Quick identification table
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| File | padtsgknp.dll, with capitalization sometimes shown differently |
| Apparent role | Legacy controller or input plugin with an ASPI-related description |
| Likely location | The original application folder, commonly a plugins subfolder |
| Likely software | Older PlayStation emulators, games, or bundled emulator packages |
| Architecture | Evidence points to 32-bit x86 software |
| Windows component | No; it is not a standard Windows DLL |
| Microsoft download | None known for this exact file |
| Publisher | Not credibly established |
First, identify the program that needs the file
The error is only useful when connected to the executable that produced it. Before changing Windows, note:
- The exact program or game you launched
- The full error text
- The path shown in the error, if any
- Whether the program came from an installer or a ZIP archive
- Whether you recently moved, cleaned, or re-extracted its folder
- Whether antivirus software recently quarantined anything
Use File Explorer to inspect the application:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Browse to the folder containing the program’s
.exefile. - Look for a folder named
plugins, plugin, pad, or a similarly named subfolder. - Search within that application folder for
padtsgknp.dll. - Do not search only in
System32. The file normally belongs beside the program that loads it.
If the DLL is present in the application folder but the program still reports it as missing, the error may concern a dependency of the DLL rather than the named file itself.
Match the error to the likely cause
Different messages point to different repairs.
“padtsgknp.dll was not found”
This usually means the file is absent from the location where the program expects its plugin. The most likely causes are an incomplete extraction, a partial installation, accidental deletion, or antivirus quarantine.
Restore the complete application or plugin package rather than replacing only the DLL.
“Cannot load padtsgknp.dll” or “Error loading padtsgknp.dll”
The file may exist but be incompatible, damaged, blocked, or built for a different application. Confirm that it came from the same emulator or game package. Do not mix a file from one emulator distribution with another.
“The specified module could not be found”
This message does not always mean that padtsgknp.dll itself is missing. Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by the DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The safest response is to reinstall the complete application package. If the error remains, use a trusted dependency diagnostic tool to identify the missing module. Avoid downloading individual dependencies until you know exactly which program requires them and where they came from.
“The procedure entry point could not be located”
This generally indicates a version mismatch. The program found a DLL, but the DLL does not provide the function that the application expects.
Restore the plugin set from the original release. Do not solve this by registering the file or replacing it with a similarly named download.

“This application has failed to start” or “not designed to run on Windows”
The file may be corrupt, incompatible with the program, or the wrong architecture. An old 32-bit emulator may also have wider compatibility problems on current Windows.
Reinstall the matching x86 application and its original plugins. If the program still fails after a clean reinstall, the issue may be compatibility rather than a missing DLL.
Access violation or crash after the DLL loads
This is not a simple missing-file problem. The plugin may be incompatible with the emulator, the selected controller configuration may be invalid, or the old program may not work correctly on current Windows.
Try another controller plugin supplied with the same package. If only the old plugin crashes, leave it disabled rather than replacing it with an unrelated copy.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the most likely solution.
If the program has a repair option
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the game, emulator, or utility.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
Not every older application exposes a Repair button. If it does not, use its original installer or archive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf the program was installed
- Close the game or emulator.
- Back up save files and configuration files if they are stored in the application directory.
- Uninstall the program from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original publisher, a legitimate installer, or the original trusted media.
- Start the program once before restoring custom settings.
- Check whether the installer recreated the
pluginsdirectory. - Confirm that
padtsgknp.dllis inside the application’s own folder if the original package includes it.
Use the complete installer, not a DLL extracted from a different release. Mixing plugin versions can produce entry-point errors or crashes even when the filename matches.
If the program was a ZIP or archive
A common failure occurs when only the executable is copied out of an archive.
- Delete or rename the incomplete extracted folder.
- Create a new folder in a location such as
C:GamesLegacyApp. - Extract the entire archive into that folder.
- Preserve all subfolders and filenames.
- Do not run the executable directly inside the compressed archive.
- Launch the executable from the newly extracted directory.
If the archive contains a plugins folder, do not flatten its contents into the main directory unless the program’s original instructions explicitly require that layout.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if the program starts without the original DLL message and its controller or input configuration opens normally. If the message changes to a dependency or entry-point error, the application found the file but the restored plugin set is incomplete or incompatible.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the file disappeared.
- Expand an entry that names the application folder or
padtsgknp.dll. - Check the detected path and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if the complete package came from a source you trust and can verify.
- Reinstall the application instead if the source is an unofficial repack or the detection remains unexplained.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the detection returns, do not repeatedly restore the file. Obtain a clean legitimate package or stop using the old software.
After restoring a file, launch the application from its original directory. Do not copy the quarantined DLL to a Windows system folder.
Fix 3: Check whether the application is 32-bit
The available evidence points to padtsgknp.dll being intended for a 32-bit application. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit programs, but a 64-bit DLL is not an interchangeable replacement.
To check the application:
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Open file location.
- Right-click the main
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab and review the product information.
- If the application documentation identifies it as x86, Win32, or 32-bit, install the matching x86 release and plugins.
For older software, the installer’s architecture is more useful than the architecture of your copy of Windows. Do not install a newer 64-bit emulator and copy old 32-bit plugins into it.
If the program has separate x86 and x64 folders, place the plugin only in the folder used by the matching executable. If you are unsure which executable launches, right-click the shortcut and inspect Properties > Target.
Fix 4: Check dependencies and the obsolete ASPI environment
The description “ASPI DLL” can be misleading. ASPI was an obsolete interface associated with SCSI and CD-access software. Older applications sometimes expected an ASPI manager such as WNASPI32.DLL, but that is not proof that installing an ASPI layer will repair padtsgknp.dll.
Look at the exact error:
- If it names
padtsgknp.dll, repair the emulator or game plugin set first. - If it names
WNASPI32.DLLor says that an ASPI manager cannot initialize, the application may be missing a separate legacy component. - If it reports that a module cannot be found, inspect dependencies rather than assuming the named plugin is the only missing file.
Do not install a random ASPI package simply because the DLL description contains the word ASPI. Use only the original application’s documented installation method, and treat old CD-access software as a compatibility and security concern.
Fix 5: Update or reinstall related drivers only when the error points to hardware
A controller plugin can expose input problems, but a missing padtsgknp.dll is not normally repaired by updating every driver on the computer. Use Device Manager when the application also reports a missing controller, USB device, or input driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, Mice and other pointing devices, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Right-click the device associated with the controller.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test the emulator again.
If the device is listed with a warning icon:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Allow Windows to detect the hardware again.
- Install the driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer if Windows does not restore it.
Manually hunting through versions for several devices can take longer than diagnosing the original input problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the emulator remains the definitive fix for a missing application plugin.
Fix 6: Check permissions and application compatibility
A legacy application may fail because its folder is read-only, protected, or located in a directory where it cannot write configuration files.
Try these steps:
- Right-click the application’s
.exefile. - Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program as an administrator.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Launch the program once.
If that does not help:
- Right-click the
.exeagain. - Select Properties > Compatibility.
- Choose Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Follow the prompts.
- Test the suggested settings.
Do not use administrator mode as a substitute for restoring missing files. It helps only when permissions or configuration writes are part of the failure.

If the application is installed under C:Program Files, avoid manually editing its files while it is running. A self-contained legacy program may work more reliably from a dedicated folder such as C:GamesLegacyApp, provided the package is trusted.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only for broader Windows problems
padtsgknp.dll is not a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself is showing corruption, update failures, or multiple built-in applications failing.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the original application.
Microsoft documents DISM as a way to repair the Windows component store and SFC as a tool for scanning protected Windows files. These commands generally will not restore a third-party emulator plugin.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed rarely helps with an application-owned DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and identify repair targets, with repair performed by the full version. It is optional; when padtsgknp.dll belongs to a game or emulator, reinstalling that program remains the definitive repair.
What not to do
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
A plugin should normally stay with the application that loads it. Copying it into a global Windows directory can create DLL-search-order problems and cause another program to load the wrong file.
Do not use regsvr32 automatically
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general DLL repair command, and there is no reliable evidence that padtsgknp.dll is a COM or ActiveX server.
Do not run:
regsvr32 padtsgknp.dll
regsvr32 /i padtsgknp.dll
If the DLL is not designed for registration, these commands can produce an entry-point error and will not restore an emulator plugin.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET at random
Those components may be required by the parent application, but there is no evidence that padtsgknp.dll is a Microsoft runtime file. Install a runtime only when the original program specifically requires it or its installer provides it.
Do not download a replacement from a generic DLL site
Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file modified outside the original package. Even a clean-looking replacement may not include the other plugins and dependencies the program needs.
The safe sources are the original application installer, a legitimate archive from the software publisher, original installation media, or a verified backup of the same program release.

If nothing works
If the file disappears after every reinstall, check:
- Windows Security Protection History
- Controlled folder access
- The application folder’s permissions
- Whether the folder is read-only
- Disk errors or failing storage
- Whether the program came from an unofficial repack
- Whether the complete archive was extracted
If the application stopped working immediately after a known system change, Windows recovery options may help roll back that change. System Restore is not a targeted DLL installer and should be treated as a last resort.
If the emulator still crashes after its original plugin set is restored, the program may simply be incompatible with current Windows. Try the application’s own compatibility settings, a different controller plugin supplied with the same release, or a legitimate newer release. Do not assume that a crash proves another copy of padtsgknp.dll is needed.
FAQ
Is padtsgknp.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with an old third-party application and emulator plugin environment, not with standard Windows components.
Can I download padtsgknp.dll by itself?
That is not the recommended repair. Restore it from the original trusted game or emulator package so that its architecture, version, and companion plugins match.
Does Microsoft provide this DLL?
There is no known Microsoft download or Windows Update package for this exact file.
Should I register padtsgknp.dll?
No. regsvr32 is intended for registration-capable DLLs, not ordinary emulator plugins.
Why does a 64-bit Windows PC report a problem with a 32-bit DLL?
Windows 64-bit can run many 32-bit applications through its compatibility layer. The application and its plugin must still match each other. A 64-bit replacement is not a fix for a 32-bit plugin.
Will installing ASPI fix the error?
Not necessarily. An ASPI-manager error involving WNASPI32.DLL is different from a missing controller plugin. Follow the exact filename in the error before installing any legacy component.
Recommended Free Tools
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while padtsgknp.dll belongs to a third-party program. Reinstall the originating application instead.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the executable that produced the message, reinstall or re-extract its complete original package, restore the full plugins directory, and check antivirus quarantine before launching it again.
