Painkiller returned on October 21, 2025, as a new first-person shooter and modern reimagining of the classic franchise. It puts fast-paced demon combat and online co-op at the center, while also allowing offline solo play with AI teammates. The game is available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
What is the new Painkiller game?
This is a brand-new entry, not a direct continuation of the older series, according to Saber Interactive’s Painkiller FAQ. Anshar Studios describes it as a modern reimagining with new gameplay, visuals, and co-op. The Champions are trapped in Purgatory and fight demons and the forces of the fallen angel Azazel.
Anshar Studios developed the game. The 2025 announcement named Saber Interactive’s 3D Realms label, while the current Steam listing identifies 3D Realms as publisher. The credits therefore involve multiple companies rather than a single developer-publisher pairing.
How does Painkiller play?
The official descriptions present it as a fast-moving shooter through gothic environments. Players can jump, dash, and grapple while using an arsenal that combines franchise references with new weapons. Tarot cards modify abilities and team builds. Anshar’s game page describes four playable Champions, seven weapons, and levels across three biomes; Saber’s FAQ lists 44 Tarot cards at launch.
