Yes, paladins use spell slots—but the level at which they receive them depends on the rules version. Under the 2014 rules, a single-class paladin gains Spellcasting at paladin level 2, so a level 1 paladin has no paladin spell slots. Under the 2024 rules, Spellcasting is a level 1 feature, and a level 1 paladin has two 1st-level spell slots.

The short answer depends on your rules edition

The word paladin does not identify one single spell-slot progression. Dungeons & Dragons has two commonly used rules versions, and they place the class’s Spellcasting feature at different levels. Check the year printed on your character-creation rules, digital compendium, or campaign document before deciding whether a low-level paladin should have slots.

Question 2014 rules 2024 rules
When does paladin Spellcasting begin? Paladin level 2. Paladin level 1.
Does a single-class level 1 paladin have paladin slots? No. Yes: two 1st-level slots.
How is the prepared list determined? Charisma modifier plus half your paladin level, rounded down, with a minimum of one prepared spell; the available slot levels limit which spells you can prepare. The class table gives a fixed prepared-spell count. At level 1, choose two 1st-level paladin spells.
How do you change prepared spells? Change the list after a long rest, following the prayer and meditation process in the Spellcasting feature. After a long rest, replace one prepared spell with another paladin spell for which you have slots.
When do expended slots return? After a long rest. After a Long Rest.

Use the official class tables for the exact number of slots at every level. The 2014 rules are published in the 2014 Paladin rules, while the revised rules are in the 2024 Paladin rules.

What a spell slot actually is

A spell slot is a resource that lets your character cast a spell of a particular level. It is not itself a spell, and it is not the same thing as the level of your paladin. A 1st-level slot is an available use for an appropriate spell; a 2nd-level slot is a different, higher-level resource. The class table tracks slots separately by spell level, such as 1st and 2nd.

Your prepared spells are the spells you have selected as available to cast. Slots answer how many slot-based castings you can make before resting; preparation answers which paladin spells are on your current list. Preparing a spell does not spend a slot. Under the 2014 rules, a prepared spell remains on your list after you cast it; the slot is the resource that is expended.

For ordinary level 1-and-higher spellcasting, you select a spell you are allowed to cast and expend a slot of the spell’s level or higher, subject to the spell’s own instructions. Using a higher-level slot can matter when a spell has an enhanced effect at a higher level. A slot is spent when the casting requires one; it is not permanently removed from your character sheet.

How the 2014 paladin gets spell slots

Spellcasting starts at paladin level 2

A character who is level 1 in paladin under the 2014 rules has martial and divine features, but not the paladin Spellcasting feature. That means the character has no spell slots supplied by the paladin class at that level. The official feature says: By 2nd level, you have learned to draw on divine magic through meditation and prayer to cast spells as a cleric does. The wording establishes the level 2 breakpoint.

At paladin level 2, the class begins providing slots and a prepared-spell list. A multiclass character can have a different result because the multiclass rules combine spellcasting progress differently; the single-class statement applies only when all of your class levels are paladin.

Preparation uses Charisma and half your paladin level

The 2014 preparation rule is calculated rather than fixed. Start with your Charisma modifier, add half your paladin level, round that half-level value down, and use a minimum of one prepared spell. For example, the half-level portion for a 5th-level paladin is 2 before adding the Charisma modifier. The final number still cannot be lower than one.

The spells you prepare must be of levels for which you have slots. Gaining access to a new slot level therefore expands the levels you can select, while your Charisma modifier affects how many spells can be on the list at once. Preparation is not a daily consumption system: after you finish a long rest and change your list, the selected spells remain available until you prepare a different list.

The official level 5 example

The 2014 class table lists a 5th-level paladin with four 1st-level slots and two 2nd-level slots. Those six slots are uses, not six different spells. A paladin might prepare several 1st- and 2nd-level options, then choose among them during the day. Casting one prepared spell spends one suitable slot, but it does not erase that spell from the prepared list.

Recovery requires a long rest

When a 2014 paladin expends a slot, that slot remains unavailable until the paladin completes a long rest. The rest restores the class’s expended spell slots. This is why the number on the class table is a per-rest resource, not a permanent lifetime allotment.

How the 2024 paladin gets spell slots

Spellcasting is a level 1 feature

The revised 2024 rules move paladin Spellcasting to the first paladin level. A single-class level 1 paladin therefore begins with two 1st-level spell slots. The feature’s opening statement is: You have learned to cast spells through prayer and meditation. The class table and feature together establish that a new paladin can cast slot-based paladin spells immediately, rather than waiting for level 2.

This is the most important reason two players can give different answers to the same question. If one character uses the 2014 class table and another uses the 2024 table, both can be following the rules correctly while disagreeing about a level 1 paladin.

The prepared list is a fixed table value

The 2024 class table supplies a fixed number of prepared paladin spells at each class level instead of asking you to calculate Charisma modifier plus half your level. At paladin level 1, the rule is to choose two 1st-level paladin spells. Your available slots still matter: you can prepare spells only when you have the slots required for them.

After a long rest, the 2024 rule lets you replace one prepared spell with another paladin spell for which you have slots. That is a controlled change to the list, not an instruction to rebuild every prepared spell whenever you rest. Keep track of the list separately from the remaining slots.

Slots return after a Long Rest

The 2024 rules state that expended spell slots return after a Long Rest. A level 1 paladin with two 1st-level slots can therefore spend both during an adventuring day and regain them by completing the required rest. The class table’s later rows show the progression of slot levels and quantities; use those rows directly instead of estimating from the level 1 or level 5 examples.

Divine Smite is a specific exception

The 2024 Paladin’s Smite feature makes Divine Smite always prepared and permits one casting without expending a spell slot before a Long Rest. That exception belongs to Divine Smite and its feature text. It does not mean that a 2024 paladin casts every paladin spell without slots, nor does it remove the normal preparation and slot rules for other spells.

What happens when you cast a paladin spell

  1. Identify the rules version. Use the 2014 or 2024 paladin table that matches the character sheet and campaign rules.
  2. Check your prepared list. The spell must be prepared under that edition’s preparation rule, unless a feature specifically makes it available in another way.
  3. Check the required spell level. Confirm that you have a slot at the spell’s level or a higher slot that the spell permits you to use.
  4. Resolve the spell’s instructions. Follow its casting time, range, components, duration, and any higher-slot effect printed in the spell’s text.
  5. Mark the slot as expended. Reduce the appropriate slot count on your sheet. The prepared spell stays prepared; only the resource is used.
  6. Restore it with the applicable rest. Paladin slots return after a long rest in both rules versions.

This sequence prevents two common bookkeeping errors: treating a prepared spell as a one-time item, and treating a spell level as if it were a number of available castings.

Single-class paladin examples

2014 level 1

A character with one paladin level under the 2014 rules has no paladin Spellcasting feature yet. There are no paladin spell slots to mark off, and the character cannot prepare paladin spells through the class. If that character has another class that grants spellcasting, any slots from that other class are governed by the multiclass rules rather than by the level 1 paladin table.

2024 level 1

A character with one paladin level under the 2024 rules has two 1st-level slots and chooses two 1st-level paladin spells. Casting one of those spells expends one 1st-level slot; casting the other can expend the second. After a Long Rest, both slots are available again, and one prepared spell can be replaced under the class rule.

Level 5 in either table

Both the 2014 and 2024 class tables list four 1st-level slots and two 2nd-level slots at paladin level 5. The shared level 5 entry does not make the two progressions identical at lower levels: the 2014 table starts spellcasting at level 2, while the 2024 table starts it at level 1. For every other level, read the row for the edition you are using.

Multiclass paladins: why the answer can change

The simple answers above assume a single-class paladin. A character with paladin levels and one or more other spellcasting classes uses the multiclass spellcasting rules to determine the character’s total slots. The paladin level at which the class grants Spellcasting still matters, but it is not enough by itself to calculate the final slot pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a multiclass character, record each class and level, identify which classes contribute to spellcasting under the rules version in use, and then apply that edition’s multiclass table. A concrete total cannot be stated without the full class breakdown. Do not copy the single-class level 1 answer onto a multiclass sheet, and do not assume that a slot gained from another class automatically lets you prepare every paladin spell; preparation and slot access remain separate questions.

Common misunderstandings

“A 1st-level paladin never has spell slots.”

That is true only for the 2014 single-class table. It is false for the 2024 table, which grants two 1st-level slots at paladin level 1.

“Spell slots are spell levels.”

They are related but different. The slot’s level describes the resource you spend; the spell’s level describes the spell you are casting. A higher-level slot can often cast a lower-level spell, but the spell’s text controls whether and how that produces an enhanced effect.

“Preparing a spell consumes it.”

Preparation selects the spells available to cast. Casting normally spends a slot, not the prepared spell itself. Under the 2014 rules, the same prepared spell can be cast again whenever you have another suitable slot.

“The 2024 Divine Smite exception makes all paladin magic free.”

It does not. The no-slot casting permission is tied to the Divine Smite feature and its stated limit of one casting before a Long Rest. Other slot-based paladin spells still use the normal slot system.

“The 2014 level 5 numbers can predict every level.”

They cannot. Four 1st-level and two 2nd-level slots is the official level 5 example for both tables, not a formula for filling in unlisted levels. Consult the relevant class table for each level.

Which rules should you use at the table?

Use the rules version chosen by the Dungeon Master or campaign group, then keep the character sheet, spell list, and class table on the same version. D&D Beyond’s current labeling distinguishes the revised 2024 rules from the 2014 rules, and both remain supported and compatible; the year labels are the clearest way to communicate which progression you mean.

  • Starting a 2014 campaign: do not add paladin slots until paladin level 2.
  • Starting a 2024 campaign: give a level 1 paladin two 1st-level slots and two prepared 1st-level paladin spells.
  • Converting a character: rebuild the spell list and slot count from the destination edition’s class table rather than carrying numbers across automatically.
  • Using multiclass levels: calculate the total with the multiclass rules after recording every class and level.

The official tables are the authoritative check for a disputed level. Refer to the 2014 class rules or the 2024 class rules that your campaign uses.

Bottom line for character creation

Answer the edition question first. A 2014 paladin receives class spell slots starting at level 2; a 2024 paladin receives two 1st-level slots at level 1. In both versions, prepared spells are a separate list from slots, ordinary slot-based casting expends a slot, and expended paladin slots return after a long rest. Features such as the 2024 Divine Smite exception can change one specific casting without replacing the general system.
