ModRetro was reported to be in talks to raise funding at a $1 billion valuation in March 2026. That figure describes a reported fundraising discussion—not revenue, and not a completed deal established by the original report.
What was reported about ModRetro’s funding?
On March 8, 2026, TechCrunch reported, citing the Financial Times, that ModRetro was in talks to raise funding at a $1 billion valuation. The report did not establish final round terms or confirm that a transaction had closed.
Other private-market data pages provide separate, attributed figures. Forge Global lists March 6, 2026 financing tranches and a $1 billion post-money valuation. Private Market View describes a $1 billion mark as of September 2026, based on an early-stage round, and says there were no later trades. These provider entries are not a company announcement and do not, by themselves, establish that the talks described in the March report resulted in a specific completed transaction on those terms.
The cited sources do not establish ModRetro revenue, unit shipments, or market share. A valuation is not a measure of any of those operating results.

What does ModRetro make?
ModRetro sells physical retro-gaming hardware. Its product range includes the M64, a console designed for original Nintendo 64 cartridges, and the Chromatic, a handheld for original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges.
M64: original cartridges on a modern display
ModRetro’s M64 product page lists the console for $229.99 and says it supports original N64 cartridges, compatible N64-style controllers, and HDMI output at resolutions up to 4K. The company lists a 16GB SD card, multi-region power adapter, and power cable as included. Buyers should supply their own HDMI cable and controller.
ModRetro says the console supports firmware updates and features such as CRT filters and overclocking. These are company specifications, not independent test results. The page also describes a growing library of new and re-released physical cartridge games, and says the company’s publishing team funds indie developers and works with studios on remasters and re-releases; that is a stated product direction, not proof of a completed catalog or specific partner terms.
Controller compatibility
According to the M64 page and ModRetro’s controller support page, compatible options include the ModRetro M64 Pro, original Nintendo 64 controllers, Hyperkin, Retro Fighters, 8BitDo 64, and Nintendo Switch Online N64 controllers when paired with an accessory. Check the company’s compatibility information for the specific controller and connection method you plan to use.

Chromatic handheld
ModRetro describes Chromatic as a handheld that plays original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. Its Chromatic collection page lists a Chromatic + Tetris bundle at $199.99. These are current company storefront listings, not evidence of sales volume or an independent assessment of the hardware. Prices and stock can change.

In an April 23, 2026 company update, CEO Torin Herndon wrote: “We are ready to give the full picture of status and ship timelines for the M64 console, controller, and games.” The update said those products were expected to ship at the end of July. That was a forecast made at the time, not a current shipping estimate.
ModRetro’s current homepage and M64 product page now list the console for sale. This updates the March report’s description of the M64 as upcoming; the product page is the relevant source for current availability and price.
Quick Recap
What the $1 billion figure does—and does not—tell you
- It is a reported valuation figure. The March article attributed the fundraising-talk figure to the Financial Times.
- It is not an operating-performance figure. The cited sources do not provide ModRetro revenue, shipment totals, or market share.
- Private-market entries need attribution. Forge Global and Private Market View publish their own financing or valuation data; those entries should not be conflated with a company-confirmed deal announcement.
