No wipe is required for Palworld 1.0. Pocketpair says you can continue an existing save, while recommending a new character if you want to experience the redesigned story and progression from the beginning. Starting fresh is an optional new run, not an instruction to delete your established world.

The important distinction: a new character is not a mandatory save deletion

Pocketpair’s official 1.0 release changelog says, “To enjoy the new experience even more, we recommend starting fresh with a new character. Of course, you can also continue your adventure with your existing save data.” That wording gives players two supported paths: retain the old adventure or begin a separate character journey. It does not say that existing worlds must be erased, reformatted or abandoned.

A pre-release PC Gamer report published on June 13, 2026 made the same point in plainer language. John Buckley (Bucky), Pocketpair’s head of publishing and communications, was quoted saying: “You do NOT need to wipe your data for Palworld 1.0.” The recommendation for a fresh character is about experiencing changed mechanics and content in sequence, not about making old saves incompatible.

The official material does not provide a platform-by-platform procedure for keeping several characters, copying a world or maintaining parallel server saves. If your world matters, preserve it before changing save files, configuration files or mods, but use the backup method documented for your own platform or server rather than assuming that a particular folder or menu works everywhere.

What changes when you continue an existing save

Continuing is allowed, but “continue” does not mean every piece of progression remains exactly as it was. Version 1.0 changes the progression framework, so some data is recalculated or reset while the underlying adventure remains available.

Main and sub-mission progress is reset

Pocketpair reset main- and sub-mission progress to keep the revised rewards and objectives fair. This is a mission-state reset, not a deletion of the world, character or accumulated playtime. You should expect to encounter mission objectives again when the 1.0 flow requires them.

There is an important exception for earlier Tower Boss progress. The changelog says some tutorial and Tower Boss-related main missions can be marked complete automatically when the game recognizes that you already defeated the relevant bosses. In other words, a returning player may see a mission reset in the log while also receiving automatic completion for specific prerequisite content. The exact result depends on which bosses were defeated in the previous save and which missions are covered by the 1.0 rules.

Experience is converted, but your level is not reduced

Accumulated experience is adjusted to the new experience table. Pocketpair specifically states that player levels are not reduced, so a high-level character should not be pushed backward simply because the level curve changed. The displayed experience amount or the distance to the next level may look different after conversion; that difference reflects the new table rather than lost levels.

Random Pal Spawn Mode has a documented data exception

In Random Pal Spawn Mode, placement data from version 0.7.3 and earlier is not carried over. This allows the 1.0 rebalance to apply instead of preserving older placement results. It is a mode-specific exception to data carryover, not evidence that every Palworld save is wiped.

If you played Random Pal Spawn Mode before 1.0, treat old placement patterns as disposable. The exception concerns placement data; it does not change the broader statement that an existing adventure can continue.

Other systems are substantially changed

The release changelog describes changes to the level cap, Pal habitats, base building, multiplayer and graphics. The player level cap rises from 65 to 80. These system changes help explain why Pocketpair prefers a fresh character for players seeking the intended 1.0 progression, but none of them creates a general requirement to delete an old save.

Why a fresh character may be the better 1.0 experience

The story and mission flow were rebuilt

Version 1.0 significantly reworks the story and mission flow so exploration, Tower Boss encounters and the route toward the World Tree connect more naturally. A new character encounters those elements in the order the release was designed to present them. A veteran who continues an old save may already have unlocked areas, defeated bosses or accumulated equipment that makes the revised sequence feel out of order.

Early rewards and progression now have different context

Because mission rewards and progression rules were adjusted, replaying early content lets you see the new reward cadence rather than jumping into a late-game state with an older progression history. The fresh-start recommendation is therefore an experience recommendation: it is for players who want to discover the revised onboarding, objectives and progression without inherited unlocks.

New content is easier to read as a complete journey

Pocketpair’s 1.0 changelog lists 72 new Pals, bringing the stated total to 287. It also raises the level cap to 80. Starting at level one is not necessary to access those additions, but it gives collectors and returning players a coherent route through the expanded systems instead of asking them to reconstruct what changed around an already completed character.

Continue or start fresh? A practical comparison

Consideration Continue the established save Start a new character
Existing world and character Keeps the established adventure available; no general wipe is required. Begins a new character journey while the official recommendation does not require deleting the old adventure.
Story and early progression You enter 1.0 with prior unlocks and may experience the redesigned flow out of sequence. Follows the reworked exploration, Tower Boss and World Tree progression from its beginning.
Main and sub-missions Mission progress is reset for 1.0 fairness; some tutorial or Tower Boss missions may auto-complete from recorded boss defeats. Plays the revised mission sequence normally, with the new reward and objective structure.
Player experience Experience is adjusted to the new table, but the player level is not reduced. Uses the new experience table from the start.
Random Pal Spawn Mode Placement data from version 0.7.3 and earlier is not carried over. Starts without legacy placement data, so the 1.0 rebalance can apply naturally.
Best fit Players attached to a long-running base, collection, build or shared adventure. Players prioritizing the intended 1.0 narrative and progression order.

How to decide without risking a long-running world

  1. Identify what you value most. If your priority is preserving a base, collection, character level or shared world, continuing is the least disruptive choice. If your priority is seeing the redesigned onboarding and story flow, a fresh character better matches Pocketpair’s recommendation.
  2. Separate mission reset from world deletion. A reset mission log does not mean the game has erased your map or character. Expect revised objectives and rewards even when the underlying save remains usable.
  3. Check your previous Tower Boss progress. Returning players may have certain tutorial or Tower Boss missions marked complete automatically. Do not assume that every mission will either reset or remain untouched; the changelog describes both outcomes for different mission cases.
  4. Protect important data before file or mod changes. Keep a platform-appropriate backup or copy before editing files, installing a mod or moving a server. Pocketpair’s public statement confirms that continuation is supported, but it does not prescribe one universal backup or multi-save workflow.
  5. Choose the normal new-character route if you want a fresh run. Do not delete the legacy save merely because the release message recommends starting over. The recommendation is for a new character experience; deletion is a separate action and is not required by 1.0.
  6. Recheck your progression after the first load. Confirm your player level, experience bar, mission list and any Random Pal Spawn placements. Differences in these areas can be expected under the new rules and should not automatically be treated as save corruption.

Common misunderstandings and how to avoid them

“My missions reset, so my save was wiped.”

Mission-state changes are explicitly part of the 1.0 transition. The game can reset main and sub-mission progress while retaining the broader adventure. Automatic completion tied to earlier Tower Boss victories can make the mission list look inconsistent at first, but that behavior is documented.

“Starting fresh means I must erase my old character.”

Pocketpair’s wording does not make deletion a prerequisite. It distinguishes a new character from continuing existing save data. Since no universal platform guide for parallel characters was published with the cited announcement, avoid deleting or overwriting a valuable save until you have confirmed how your particular version handles additional characters or worlds.

“The random-spawn change applies to every mode.”

The carryover exception is specifically documented for Random Pal Spawn Mode and placement data from version 0.7.3 and earlier. It should not be generalized into a claim that all world data is discarded.

“My level should drop because the experience table changed.”

Pocketpair says the accumulated experience is adjusted while player levels are not reduced. A changed experience total or next-level requirement is therefore not, by itself, evidence that levels were taken away.

“The new level cap proves an old save cannot work.”

The cap increase from 65 to 80 is a system expansion, not a compatibility warning. It gives continuing characters additional room to progress under 1.0’s rules.

Which players should choose each path?

Choose continuation if your established world is the priority

Continue if you have a long-running build, a collection you do not want to reconstruct, or a shared adventure whose history matters more than seeing every early mission in the new order. You will still receive the 1.0 systems and content, while accepting the mission, experience and Random Pal placement rules described above.

Choose a fresh character if discovery is the priority

Start a new character if you want the redesigned story flow, revised rewards and early progression to arrive in sequence. This is especially suitable for a returning player who wants to understand what changed rather than stepping into a high-level save with many old unlocks already active.

For groups, decide before anyone changes the shared setup

Multiplayer systems are among the areas changed in 1.0. A group using an established world should agree whether preserving that world or replaying the progression is more important before anyone edits files, changes mods or alters a server configuration. The public release information does not define one cross-platform procedure for duplicating a shared world.

What the official record establishes

Pocketpair’s official 1.0 release changelog, dated July 10, 2026 and mirrored on Palworld.tools, establishes that existing save data can continue, a new character is recommended but optional, mission progress resets with documented Tower Boss exceptions, experience is converted without reducing player levels, and older Random Pal placement data is excluded. The same changelog records the level-cap increase from 65 to 80 and the addition of 72 Pals, for 287 total.

The June 13, 2026 PC Gamer report supplies the pre-release explanation and Buckley’s direct “You do NOT need to wipe your data” clarification. Neither source supplies a universal platform-specific recipe for backups, multiple save slots or server migration. Those details should be handled according to the instructions for the platform or hosting setup you use.

Bottom line: 1.0 is a choice between continuity and a clean progression path

Palworld 1.0 does not force a reset. Keep the established save if preserving your world and character matters most; start a new character if you want the redesigned story, rewards and progression to unfold as intended. Expect mission-state changes, experience-table conversion and the documented Random Pal placement exception either way, and treat deletion as unnecessary unless you independently decide that a permanent restart is what you want.
